BACKGROUNDS: Obese subjects affected by binge eating can be distinguished between those showing full criteria Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and those who show binge eating of insufficient frequency to satisfy DSM criteria, or sub-threshold BED (s-BED). The present paper aims to investigate whether subjects with BED full criteria show more hypomanic symptoms than those with s-BED, after controlling for personality variables as potential confounders.
METHODS: The Hypomania Checklist (HCL-32), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) were administered t

BACKGROUND: Irritable mood during mood elevation is common in bipolar disorder. The progesterone metabolite allopregnanolone (ALLO) has been implicated in other disorders presenting with irritability. This study aimed to test whether a history of manic/hypomanic irritability is associated with low serum progesterone levels; and whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in gene coding for steroidogenetic enzymes (HSD3B2, SRD5A1 and AKR1C4 were coupled to previous manic irritability and/or with serum progesterone concentrations.
METHODS: Morning serum progesterone concentrations during eut

Several lines of research suggest that impairments in long-term potentiation (LTP)-like synaptic plasticity might be a key pathophysiological mechanism in schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder type I (BDI) and II (BDII). Using modulations of visually evoked potentials (VEP) of the electroencephalogram, impaired LTP-like visual cortical plasticity has been implicated in patients with BDII, while there has been conflicting evidence in SZ, a lack of research in BDI, and mixed results regarding associations with symptom severity, mood states, and medication. We measured the VEP of patients with

This article argues for the necessity of a partial return to Kraepelin's broad concept of manic-depressive illness, and proposes definitions--and provides prototypical cases--to illustrate the rich clinical phenomenology of bipolar subtypes I through IV. Although considerable evidence supports such extensions of bipolarity encroaching upon the territory of major depressive disorder, further research is needed in this area. From a practice standpoint, the compelling reason for broadening the bipolar spectrum lies in the utility of mood stabilizers as augmentation or monotherapy in the treatment

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study was to screen for bipolarity and to investigate the affective temperaments of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the possible association between the clinical and demographic characteristics of MS patients and temperament profiles.
METHODS: A total of 65 patients with MS and 66 healthy volunteers completed the 32-item hypomania checklist (HCl-32), the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), and the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) tests. The HCl-32, MDQ, and TEMPS-A scores were compared betwe

BACKGROUND: Antidepressant withdrawal manic states are intriguing and under-recognized phenomena. The associated patho-physiological pathways are ill defined and the inclusion of the phenomena in the bipolar spectrum disorders is questionable. This study aims to update a review on antidepressant discontinuation manic states published in 2008 and to look for hints alluding to bipolar disorder in the affected published cases and in the literature. It also reviews the different hypotheses proposed to explain discontinuation mania.
METHODS: We searched Pubmed using the key words: 'antidepressant

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is a characteristic of bipolar disorder (BD) that can contribute to the risk for suicidal behavior. Evidence suggests that gray and white matter abnormalities are linked with impulsivity, but little is known about the association between corpus callosum (CC) and impulsivity in BD. We examined the CC area and impulsivity in euthymic bipolar I patients, with and without lifetime history of suicide attempts, and in healthy controls.
METHODS: Nineteen bipolar patients with a suicide attempt history (BP-S), 21 bipolar patients without suicide attempt history (BP-NS), and 22

OBJECTIVES: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders guidelines provide only a partial solution to the nosology and treatment of bipolar disorder in that disorders with common symptoms and biological correlates may be categorized separately because of superficial differences related to behavior, life history, and temperament. The relationship is explored between extremely rapid switching forms of bipolar disorder, in which manic and depressive symptoms are either mixed or switch rapidly, and forms of borderline personality disorder in which affective lability is a prominent sy

The present work provides a short-term, intensive, and integrative model for the assessment and treatment of mood disorders within a hospital setting. This model was developed and implemented at the Milwaukee Psychiatric Hospital in a specific inpatient program, a 15-bed unit for patients suffering from dysthymia, cyclothymia, major depression, and bipolar disorders. This paper describes the program and its philosophy, the target population, and assessment and treatment interventions. The data collected included pre- and posttreatment measurements of psychopathology and cognitive and emotional

High rates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are reported in people with major depression (MD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Substance abuse problems in adolescence may also indicate risk for future onset of mood disorders, especially BD. Data collected from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), a large UK birth cohort, allowed information to be collected over several different time points and to test whether problematic alcohol use at age 16 was predictive of vulnerability to hypomanic symptoms at age 23. Controlling for a participant's gender, SES, marital status of the moth

BACKGROUND: Previously, we compared the hyperthymic scores of residents in Sapporo, Koshigaya, and Oita (which are located at latitudes of 43°N, 36°N, and 33°N in Japan, respectively) using the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-auto questionnaire version (TEMPS-A). We found that residents who lived at lower latitudes had higher hyperthymic temperament scores; however, the mechanism of the effect of latitude on hyperthymic temperament remained unclear. The current study examined the mediators of the latitude effect in additional regions with different annual temperatu

OBJECTIVES: Reward sensitivity is suggested to be an influence on the onset and reoccurrence of bipolar disorder (BD) in observational longitudinal studies. The current study examined whether reward sensitivity predicted the recurrence of mood episodes in a treatment seeking sample. We also explored if reward sensitivity moderated treatment outcomes of psychosocial treatment.
METHODS: Seventy-six euthymic adult patients with BD were randomly assigned to either Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Supportive Therapy (ST) and followed up for 2 years after completing therapy (Meyer and Hautzing

OBJECTIVE: Impulsivity is a well-established trait of bipolar disorder (BD) that persists across mood phases. It is, however, still unknown whether, in BD, impulsivity remains stable or varies in intensity over the lifespan. This cross-sectional study compared impulsive behavior in older euthymic BD patients and healthy individuals using a range of self-rating and behavioral measures of impulsivity.
METHODS: 28 BD patients (56.07 ± 4.08 years, 16 women) and 15 healthy controls (HC; 55.1 ± 3.95 years, 6 women) were administered the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS) and selected tasks of the Camb

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to identify how the activity of large-scale brain networks differs between mood states in bipolar disorder. The authors measured spontaneous brain activity in subjects with bipolar disorder in mania and euthymia and compared these states to a healthy comparison population.
METHODS: 23 subjects with bipolar disorder type I in a manic episode, 24 euthymic bipolar I subjects, and 23 matched healthy comparison (HC) subjects underwent resting state fMRI scans. Using an existing parcellation of the whole brain, we measured functional connectivity between brain regions a

BACKGROUND: Researchers have previously found that persistent subthreshold symptoms increase the risk and shorten the time until an affective relapse in bipolar disorder (BD) patients. Research has mainly focused on patients from tertiary Care Centers in USA. We tested the hypothesis that even in a different setting, BD outpatients with subsyndromal affective symptoms would re.turn to a subsequent major affective episode significantly faster than completely asymptomatic at baseline. Secondarily, we analysed other variables related to time and risk to relapse.
METHODS: A community cohort of BD

OBJECTIVES: The first objective of our study is the evaluation of correlation between affective temperaments and psychopathological dimensions in a clinical sample of patients with Bipolar Disorder and the individualization of possible differences within the three diagnostic subtypes (bipolar I, II and cyclothymia). The second one is to observe whether any specific temperament may influence the number of hospitalizations or the age of the bipolar depression onset.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: At the Bipolar Disorder Unit of Policlinico Gemelli (Rome, Italy) a group of 60 patients with Bipolar Disor
