Streptomyces leeuwenhoekii sp. nov., the producer of chaxalactins and chaxamycins, forms a distinct branch in Streptomyces gene trees.

A polyphasic study was carried out to establish the taxonomic status of an Atacama Desert isolate, Streptomyces strain C34(T), which synthesises novel antibiotics, the chaxalactins and chaxamycins. The organism was shown to have chemotaxonomic, cultural and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus Streptomyces. Analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain C34(T) formed a distinct phyletic line in the Streptomyces gene tree that was very loosely associated with the type strains of several Streptomyces species. Multilocus sequence analysis based on five

Distribution of biosurfactant-producing bacteria in undisturbed and contaminated arid Southwestern soils.

Biosurfactants are a unique class of compounds that have been shown to have a variety of potential applications in the remediation of organic- and metal-contaminated sites, in the enhanced transport of bacteria, in enhanced oil recovery, as cosmetic additives, and in biological control. However, little is known about the distribution of biosurfactant-producing bacteria in the environment. The goal of this study was to determine how common culturable surfactant-producing bacteria are in undisturbed and contaminated sites. A series of 20 contaminated (i.e., with metals and/or hydrocarbons) and u

Environmental stressors and cardiovascular health: acting locally for global impact in a changing world.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 70% of global mortality and are responsible for over 38 million deaths annually, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) constituting most of these fatalities. While traditional risk factors for CVD have long been recognized, there is growing evidence that a rising prevalence of ubiquitous environmental risk factors (ERFs) may play an increasingly significant role in the genesis and rising prevalence of NCDs. ERFs include many interconnected anthropogenic exposures with cumulative compound health impacts, including air pollution, noise exposure, artificia

Migratory connectivity and barrier-crossing flights of Vermivora warblers are associated with synoptic weather conditions.

Migratory birds often navigate inhospitable barriers (e.g. oceans, deserts) during migration. Barrier crossings are frequently associated with increased rates of mortality and likely impose selective pressures on migratory species that shape their behaviour and distribution. Therefore, understanding how weather conditions influence the behaviour of migratory birds at a major barrier can provide insight into the adaptive evolution of long-distance migrations involving barrier crossings and how changing climatic conditions might affect migratory species in the future. We used light-level geoloca

Prevalence and epidemiology of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium infection in two areas of Egypt recently reclaimed from the desert.

Projects are being carried out in many regions of Egypt to reclaim land from the desert for agriculture. This paper presents findings from a baseline epidemiologic study conducted in 1992 in two newly reclaimed areas near Ismailia, Egypt. In the first area, just east of the Suez Canal, 40.0% of the residents tested positive for Schistosoma mansoni and 1.7% tested positive for S. haematobium, while in the second area, 15 km southwest of Ismailia, 49.3% tested positive for S. mansoni and 3.3% tested positive for S. haematobium. The intensities of S. mansoni infection were moderately high, with a

Climate, habitats, and food resources-Environmental influences on early human occupation in the Nihewan Basin, East Asia.

Over the past century, the Nihewan Basin is a key area for studying Quaternary environmental changes and hominin adaptations in East Asia and has served as a vital region for exploring the evolution of early human cultures. However, the insufficient research on human-environment interactions in this region has hindered a comprehensive understanding of hominin evolutionary processes. Here, we quantify climatic variations, reconstruct ecosystem landscapes, analyze the richness of food taxa potentially exploitable by hominins, and evaluate environmental impacts on human activities in the Nihewan

Exploring the Relationship between Wind Patterns and Hospital Admissions Due to Respiratory Symptoms in Children.

Respiratory disorders significantly impact adolescents' health, often resulting in hospital admissions. Meteorological elements such as wind patterns have emerged as potential contributors to respiratory symptoms. However, it remains uncertain whether fluctuations in wind characteristics over extended periods have a tangible impact on respiratory health, particularly in regions characterized by distinct annual wind patterns. Crete is situated in the central-eastern Mediterranean Sea and frequently faces southerly winds carrying Sahara Desert sand from Africa and northerly winds from the Aegean

Controlled hypobaric hypoxia increases immunological tolerance by modifying HLA-G expression, a potential therapy to inflammatory diseases.

One of the most striking characteristics of human beings is the incredible capacity to adapt to different environments. This capacity allowed humans to spread all over our planet, occupying habitats as diverse as deserts, tropical forests or tundra regions. Interactions with the environment, climate, food and water availability shaped our evolution and define our survival. Essential to human life, oxygen availability also controls human dispersion and adaptation. For example, low oxygen availability can lead to physiological adaptations in populations living in highlands. Moreover, the consequ

Stress phenotyping of wild desert legume Acacia senegal with machine learning application and phytochemical characterization of bipinnate leaves.

Plants encounter multiple abiotic stresses. Among them, heat and drought stress play a substantial role in reducing the agricultural productivity of commercial plants. Hence, wild and underutilized plants can be a potential alternative as they are naturally tolerant to extreme climatic conditions and are a rich source of nutrition. Manual stress and disease detection is a laborious and expensive process, and hence automation in this field is required to reduce agricultural losses. This study evaluates the prediction and detection of abiotic stress in Acacia senegal bipinnate leaves, exploring

Risk factors for heat-related illnesses during the Hajj mass gathering: an expert review.

Human exposure to a hot environment may result in various heat-related illnesses (HRIs), which range in severity from mild and moderate forms to life-threatening heatstroke. The Hajj is one of the largest annual mass gatherings globally and has historically been associated with HRIs. Hajj attracts over two million Muslim pilgrims from more than 180 countries to the holy city of Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Several modifiable and non-modifiable factors render Hajj pilgrims at increased risk of developing HRIs during Hajj. These include characteristics of the Hajj, its location, population,

Antifungal activity of extracts from Atacama Desert fungi against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and identification of Aspergillus felis as a promising source of natural bioactive compounds.

Fungi of the genus Paracoccidioides are responsible for paracoccidioidomycosis. The occurrence of drug toxicity and relapse in this disease justify the development of new antifungal agents. Compounds extracted from fungal extract have showing antifungal activity. Extracts of 78 fungi isolated from rocks of the Atacama Desert were tested in a microdilution assay against Paracoccidioides brasiliensis Pb18. Approximately 18% (5) of the extracts showed minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ≤ 125.0 µg/mL. Among these, extract from the fungus UFMGCB 8030 demonstrated the best results, with a

Q fever in the Southern California desert: epidemiology, clinical presentation and treatment.

Despite the absence of a natural reservoir for Q fever in the desert of Southern California, six cases have been identified during the past 32 years. During that period of time, two areas have been used by northern sheep ranchers from Idaho and Wyoming to import sheep to an area in the Coachella Valley through 1985. Thereafter, because of housing development, the sheep area was moved to Blythe along the Colorado River. All but two of these patients probably acquired infection by Coxiella burnetii by living or working in close proximity to these grazing areas but not directly involved with the
