Factor structure of borderline personality disorder and response to Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving.

Differential response to the Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) program was compared in subgroups identified through latent class analysis (LCA). STEPPS is an evidence-based group treatment program for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). A reanalysis of data was conducted using data from a 20-week randomized controlled trial and 1-year follow-up. Subjects (n = 164) with DSM-IV BPD were assessed for comorbid Axis I and II disorders and selected clinical variables. Severity was assessed using the Zanarini Rating Scale for BPD (ZAN-BPD) and

[Transsexualism: a Brain Disorder that Begins to Known].

Transsexualism describes the condition when a person's psychological gender differs from his or her biological sex. People with gender identity disorder suffer persistently from this incongruence and they search hormonal and surgical sex reassignment to the desired anatomical sex. This review, from an ethical perspective, intends to give an overview of structural and functional neurobiological correlations of transsexualism and their course under cross-sex hormonal administration. Several studies demonstrate an increased functional connectivity between cortex regions reaffirming psychosocial d

Neural network of body representation differs between transsexuals and cissexuals.

Body image is the internal representation of an individual's own physical appearance. Individuals with gender identity disorder (GID), commonly referred to as transsexuals (TXs), are unable to form a satisfactory body image due to the dissonance between their biological sex and gender identity. We reasoned that changes in the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) network would neurologically reflect such experiential incongruence in TXs. Using graph theory-based network analysis, we investigated the regional changes of the degree centrality of the rsFC network. The degree centrality is

Dimensions of personality disorders in offenders.

BACKGROUND: Owing to criticisms of current concepts of personality disorders such as high comorbidity, criteria overlap and arbitrary thresholds of categorical diagnoses, a dimensional assessment is proposed that considers interrelations between different personality disorders. Results of previous factor analyses using dimensional personality disorder scores have indicated that one underlying dimension shows strong similarities to the concept of psychopathy and is similarly related to criminal recidivism. AIM: The authors examined the underlying dimensions of ICD-10 personality disorders, to

A Simplified and Robust Protocol for the Isolation and Long-term Expansion of Primary Human Endometrial Epithelial Cells.

Research on endometrial disorders, including tamoxifen-associated endometrial hyperplasia, has been limited by the lack of robust in vitro epithelial models. Conventional methods for isolating human endometrial epithelial cells (HEECs) are often inefficient, technically demanding, and poorly scalable. Here, a simplified, feeder-free protocol is described that integrates mixed-enzyme digestion, erythrocyte lysis, and sustained ROCK inhibitor (Y-27632) treatment to enable efficient isolation and expansion of primary HEECs. The inclusion of Y-27632 is critical for mitigating dissociation-induced

Reconceptualization of borderline conditions through the lens of the alternative model of personality disorders.

Borderline (BPD) and schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) were introduced in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III). However, the clinical differentiation of the 2 diagnoses (e.g., psychotic-like features) was challenging for diagnostic classification and clinical management. With the introduction of the alternative model for personality disorders (AMPD) in DSM-5 Section III, a dimensional approach was proposed, which potentially holds promise for better future differentiation between BPD and SPD. The present study sought to examine the psychopatho

Cognitive sequences in obsessive-compulsive disorder are supported by frontal cortex ramping activity and mediated by symptom severity.

Completing sequences is part of everyday life. Many such sequences can be considered abstract - that is, defined by a rule that governs the order but not the identity of individual steps (e.g., getting dressed for work). Over-engagement in ritualistic and repetitive behaviors seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suggests that abstract sequences may be disrupted in this disorder. Previous work has shown the necessity of the rostrolateral prefrontal cortex (RLPFC) for abstract sequence processing and that neural activity increases (ramps) in this region across sequences (Desrochers et al.

An unusual delusion of duplication in a patient affected by Dementia with Lewy bodies.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most frequent diagnosis of progressive degenerative dementia in older people. Delusions are common features in DLB and, among them, Capgras syndrome represents the most frequent disturbance, characterized by the recurrent and transient belief that a familiar person, often a close family member or caregiver, has been replaced by an identical-looking imposter. However, other delusional conditions near to misidentification syndromes can occur in DLB patients and may represent a major psychiatric disorder, although rarely studied systematic

Insights in spatio-temporal characterization of human fetal neural stem cells.

Primary human fetal cells have been used in clinical trials of cell replacement therapy for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's disease (HD). However, human fetal primary cells are scarce and difficult to work with and so a renewable source of cells is sought. Human fetal neural stem cells (hfNSCs) can be generated from human fetal tissue, but little is known about the differences between hfNSCs obtained from different developmental stages and brain areas. In the present work we characterized hfNSCs, grown as neurospheres, obtained from three developmental stages:

Irisin and anxiety-like behaviors: Mechanistic integration of peripheral-central crosstalk, neuroinflammation, and neural plasticity.

Anxiety-related disorders are highly prevalent and persistently difficult to treat, largely due to insufficient understanding of peripheral-central regulatory mechanisms governing emotional behaviors. Irisin, an exercise-dependent myokine, serves as a critical peripheral-to-central signaling mediator modulating brain function and anxiety-like behavioral phenotypes. This review systematically integrates current preclinical evidence illustrating how irisin regulates anxiety through multi-level neural mechanisms. Irisin suppresses microglial NF-κB/STAT3-mediated neuroinflammation, enhances prefro

Effects of Patient Gender on Clinicians' Diagnostic Assessment of Youth Disruptive Mood and Behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Youth disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) have a male preponderance, but the extent to which gender biases in clinical assessment influence this imbalance remains unclear. The present study investigates whether a child patient's gender affects clinicians' diagnostic decision-making regarding Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Dissocial Disorder (CDD), and Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED). METHOD: Clinicians (N = 403; 57.1% male; Mage = 48.96 years, SD = 11.09) participated in a global ICD-11 field study. Following an experimental design, participants were asked to u

Primary Mouse Choroidal Endothelial Cell Culture.

The study of choroidal endothelial cells is essential for understanding the pathological mechanisms underlying choroidal neovascularization and other vision-threatening disorders. Traditional methods for isolating and culturing primary endothelial cells often yield mixed populations or require specialized equipment, limiting their widespread use. Here, we present a straightforward protocol for isolating and culturing primary mouse choroidal endothelial cells. This protocol involves enzymatic digestion of choroidal tissue, magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) to enrich CD31+ endothelial cells

An individual patient comparison of response to a memory training program--psychogenic V organic amnesia: brief report.

Psychogenic amnesia ("dissociative amnesia" in DSM-IV) has received relatively little attention in the literature. We compared neuropsychological and behavioral findings between a patient with psychogenic amnesia and one with organic amnesia from their early stages in a rehabilitation program. A 52-yr-old man developed anterograde and retrograde amnesia and short-term memory disturbance 1 mo after an operation for esophageal carcinoma, with no loss of personal identity and information. No apparent organic causes were identified, but because the patient and his wife rejected psychiatric treatme

Presence of factor VIII-related antigen in blood platelets of patients with Von Willebrand's disease.

VON WILLEBRAND'S disease (VWD) is an autosomally inherited disorder characterised by low factor VIII activity (antihaemophilic factor, AHF), prolonged bleeding time, reduced retention of platelets in a glass bead column and abnormal distocetin-induced platelet aggregation. The prolonged bleeding time in VWD has been attributed to the absence of a plasma factor, the von Willebrand factor (VWF), as shown by a correction of the bleeding time after infusion of normal and haemophilic plasmas1. Addition of purified factor VIII in vitro specifically corrects the abnormal platelet retention and ristoc

Explosive-driven double-blast exposure: molecular, histopathological, and behavioral consequences.

Traumatic brain injury generated by blast may induce long-term neurological and psychiatric sequelae. We aimed to identify molecular, histopathological, and behavioral changes in rats 2 weeks after explosive-driven double-blast exposure. Rats received two 30-psi (~ 207-kPa) blasts 24 h apart or were handled identically without blast. All rats were behaviorally assessed over 2 weeks. At Day 15, rats were euthanized, and brains removed. Brains were dissected into frontal cortex, hippocampus, cerebellum, and brainstem. Western blotting was performed to measure levels of total-Tau, phosphorylated-

Between Wallenberg syndrome and hemimedullary lesion: Cestan-Chenais and Babinski-Nageotte syndromes in medullary infarctions.

In comparison with the lateral (Wallenberg), medial (Dejerine) and hemimedullary (Reinhold) medulla oblongata syndromes, the Babinski-Nageotte and Cestan-Chenais syndromes are much less familiar cerebrovascular disorders. While the Babinski-Nageotte syndrome is usually confused with the hemimedullary syndrome, reports of the extremely rare Cestan-Chenais syndrome are missing from the modern neurological literature. The pathological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) correlations of the Cestan-Chenais syndrome have not been shown so far. We compared clinical and MRI features of two patients e

Differentiating between intrapsychic symptoms and behavioral expressions of borderline personality disorder in relation to childhood emotional maltreatment and emotion dysregulation: an exploratory investigation.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder, characterized by pronounced instability in emotions, self-image, and interpersonal relationships. Experiences of childhood maltreatment are among the risk factors for BPD. While self-damaging and aggressive acts often occur, not every person with the disorder shows markedly dysregulated behaviour. Internalized symptoms, such as shame, loneliness, and self-disgust tend to be more pervasive and persist after clinical remission. OBJECTIVE: Here we investigated associations between BPD symptom severity, childhood maltr

[Therapeutics approach of adult patients with acute and chronic psychotic states: REALITE survey].

A retrospective observational pharmaco-epidemiological survey was conducted during 24 weeks between October 2004 and March 2005 in metropolitan France (384 investigators) to more clearly define the use of loxapine in acute and chronic psychotic states. The objective of this national survey was to specify the clinical and therapeutic profile of patients managed by this antipsychotic in two cohorts of adult patients: one in "acute phase" (prescription of loxapine during the previous 4 weeks), the other in "maintenance phase" (prescription of loxapine for more than 8 weeks). The two groups of the

Trace-n-Seq combines retrograde fluorescent tracing with sorting and single-cell sequencing of innervating peripheral neurons.

Neuronal innervation plays a pivotal role in controlling tissue function during homeostasis and regeneration, as well as in pathological contexts such as inflammation, autoimmune disorders, fibrosis and cancer. A major obstacle in understanding neuron-tissue interactions at the molecular level is that neuronal cell bodies reside in peripheral ganglia often far outside the organ of interest and are therefore typically excluded in common single-cell datasets of tissues. Here we developed Trace-n-Seq to address this issue-a method that combines retrograde tracing with fluorescence-activated cell
