Health-related declines in activity level: examining religious participation in older Mexican Americans.

OBJECTIVES: Failing health is theorized as a key driver of declines in religious participation in late older adulthood. Few studies, however, have directly examined whether deteriorating health plays a role in these declines. Furthermore, health is multifaceted, yet little research has distinguished multiple aspects of health that are important for these declines in religious participation. Notably, no known research has been conducted in the Hispanic American population. METHODS: This study uses eight waves from the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly

The built environment as determinant of childhood obesity: A systematic literature review.

We evaluated the epidemiological evidence on the built environment and its link to childhood obesity, focusing on environmental factors such as traffic noise and air pollution, as well as physical factors potentially driving obesity-related behaviors, such as neighborhood walkability and availability and accessibility of parks and playgrounds. Eligible studies were (i) conducted on human children below the age of 18 years, (ii) focused on body size measurements in childhood, (iii) examined at least one built environment characteristic, (iv) reported effect sizes and associated confidence inter

Cruciferous Vegetables and Risk of Cancers of the Gastrointestinal Tract.

Cancers of the oropharyngeal tissues, oesophagus, stomach, and colorectum are amongst the most common causes of death from cancer throughout the world. Higher consumption of fruits and vegetables is thought to be protective, and cruciferous vegetables are of particular interest because of their unique role as a source of biologically active glucosinolate breakdown products. A literature review of primary studies and meta-analyses indicates that higher consumption of cruciferous vegetables probably reduces the risk of colorectal and gastric cancers by approximately 8% and 19%, respectively. Genetics of dopamine and its contribution to cocaine addiction.

Cocaine addiction is a major health and social problem for which there are presently no effective pharmacotherapies. Many of the most promising medications target dopamine based on the large literature that supports its role in addiction. Recent studies show that genetic factors are also important. Rodent models and gene knock-out technology have helped elucidate the involvement of specific genes in the function of the dopamine reward system and intracellular cascades that lead to neuronal changes in this system. Human epidemiological, linkage, and association studies have identified allelic v

Breast cancer epidemiology, diagnostic barriers, and contemporary trends in breast nanotheranostics and mechanisms of targeting.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is one of the main causes of mortality in women globally. Early and accurate diagnosis represents a milestone in cancer management. Several breast cancer diagnostic agents are available. Many chemotherapeutic agents in conventional dosage forms are approved; nevertheless, they lack cancer cell specificity, resulting in improper treatment and undesirable side effects. Recently, nanotheranostics has emerged as a new paradigm to achieve safe and effective cancer diagnosis and management. AREA COVERED: This review provides insight into breast cancer epidemiology, barri

Exposure Opportunity: The Advantages of Including Men in Analyses of Female-Related Risk Factors.

Intuitively, researchers do not include subjects who do not have the opportunity to be exposed, such as men in studies on oral contraceptives (OCs). We aimed to explore in which situations it is nevertheless beneficial to do so. We considered the effect of including men in case-control analyses of 8 different hypothetical data sets on the effect of OC use and venous thrombosis. In all scenarios, OC use was the exposure of interest, sex the factor that determined exposure opportunity, and air travel another risk factor. In some of these scenarios, sex and air travel were included as confounders

Dietary Fructose and Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer: Metabolic, Microbial, and Translational Perspectives.

Early-onset colorectal cancer (eoCRC) is increasing globally, raising interest in modifiable dietary exposures that may contribute to its development. High fructose intake, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages and high-fructose corn syrup, has been associated with colorectal neoplasia and eoCRC in epidemiologic studies. Experimental evidence suggests that fructose may promote colorectal tumorigenesis through enhanced uptake and metabolism, polyol pathway activation, glycolytic and lipogenic reprogramming, hypoxic adaptation, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment. Excess fruct

Sex and gender as contributors to brain pathophysiology, clinical course, and therapeutic response in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune demyelinating disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord. MS is characterized by different neurological and cognitive impairments. Several lines of evidence suggest sex-based differences in the incidence, clinical course and pathophysiology of the disease. Epidemiological data show that women are three times more likely to suffer from MS compared to men and tend to present symptoms earlier. Other evidence indicates that men experience more aggressive forms of MS and women respond better to certain disease-modifying drugs. In this mini review

A Narrative Review of the Association Between Cataracts and Dementia.

Dementia and cataract are two of the most prevalent conditions in older adults, together representing a substantial global health burden. Increasing evidence suggests a potential link between cataract and dementia, and this narrative review synthesizes current epidemiological and mechanistic evidence on their association. Recent cohort and case-control studies report a modestly increased risk of dementia in individuals with cataracts, though inconsistencies persist across populations. Mechanistic insights highlight roles for visual impairment and protein aggregation in this association. Import

A Military Case Review Method to Determine and Record the Mechanism of Injury (BioTab) from In-Theater Attacks.

A recent study of all mounted vehicle underbody blast attacks found that 21% of Abbreviated Injury Scale Severity 2+ injuries in the Joint Trauma Analysis and Prevention of Injury in Combat network were injuries to the leg and ankle. To develop effective countermeasure systems for these attacks, the epidemiology and mechanisms of injury from this loading environment need to be quantified. The goal of this study was to develop a military correlate of an existing civilian case review framework, the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN), to consider the differences in military eve

Risk factors and early detection of atherosclerosis in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an increased morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). This cannot be explained alone by the increased prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors like smoking and hypertension. Other factors therefore seem to be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in RA. METHODS: Literature was searched for epidemiology and pathophysiology of atherosclerosis in RA, with special focus on the role of advanced glycation end products (AGE's), endothelial activation, endothelial dysfunction and premature atherosclero

Sexual dysfunction associated with antidepressant drugs.

The term 'sexual dysfunction' describes a disturbance in sexual desire and the psychophysiological changes that characterise the normal sexual response cycle, and cause marked personal distress and interpersonal difficulty. Epidemiological studies indicate that sexual dysfunction is common in the general population, but more common in depressed individuals in community settings and clinical samples. Most antidepressant drugs have adverse effects on sexual function, but accurate identification of the incidence of treatment-emergent dysfunction has proved troublesome. Futhermore, investigations

Predictors of HIV-preventive sexual behavior in a high-risk adolescent population: the influence of perceived peer norms and sexual communication on incarcerated adolescents' consistent use of condoms.

Data were collected from 112 sexually active adolescents incarcerated in a juvenile detention facility to identify predictors of consistent use of condoms during sexual intercourse. Adolescents completed an anonymous epidemiologic survey instrument developed by the Centers for Disease Control. The self-report survey assessed demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors. Three factors were identified as associated with consistent condom use. These significant bivariate factors were entered into a multivariate logistic regression model to identify the independent contribution of each factor

Modifiable risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in 155 722 individuals from 21 high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries (PURE): a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Global estimates of the effect of common modifiable risk factors on cardiovascular disease and mortality are largely based on data from separate studies, using different methodologies. The Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study overcomes these limitations by using similar methods to prospectively measure the effect of modifiable risk factors on cardiovascular disease and mortality across 21 countries (spanning five continents) grouped by different economic levels. METHODS: In this multinational, prospective cohort study, we examined associations for 14 potentially modif

Maternal depression and infant social withdrawal as predictors of behaviour and development in vertically HIV-infected children at 3.5 years.

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, there is a high prevalence of post-partum depression and it is often associated with HIV status. Maternal depression negatively affects mothering and can lead to social withdrawal in infants. Maternal depression and infant social withdrawal can have deleterious long-term effects on children's behaviour and neurodevelopmental trajectories. AIM: To investigate whether maternal depression and infant social withdrawal at 10-12 months post-partum were significant predictors of child behaviour and development at 42 months. METHOD: Seventy-four mothe

Diet, ultra-processed foods, and gut dysbiosis: linking emulsifiers to colorectal cancer risk.

The rising intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has raised concerns about their effects on gut microbiota and the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). Emulsifiers, among the various additives in ultra-processed foods, have attracted considerable interest due to their possible involvement in gut dysbiosis, inflammation, and carcinogenesis. Emulsifiers, including polysorbates and carboxymethylcellulose, have the potential to compromise the intestinal barrier, modify microbial composition, and foster a pro-inflammatory environment that may facilitate the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). This

Molecular insights into the role of vitamin D in atopic dermatitis: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and emerging therapies.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by skin barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and microbial imbalance. Increasing evidence suggests that vitamin D, a secosteroid hormone with pleiotropic effects, plays a key role in modulating the pathogenesis of AD. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms through which vitamin D influences skin integrity and immune function, focusing on vitamin D receptor-mediated pathways, genetic and epigenetic modifiers, and the interplay with immune cells and microbiota. We also examine the

Environmental mycotoxins: A potential etiological factor for neurodegenerative diseases?

Mycotoxins are potential environmental risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases. These toxins penetrate the central nervous system via a compromised blood-brain barrier, which may cause oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, these can also contribute to amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque accumulation, Tau protein hyperphosphorylation, and neurofibrillary tangle formation. Mycotoxins also activate microglia, cause neuronal apoptosis, and disrupt central nervous system function. This study examines the evidence linking mycotoxin exposure to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's

Pneumococcal Serotype Identification by Capsular Sequence Typing (CST): A Modified Novel Approach for Serotyping Directly in Clinical Samples.

As almost 60-70% of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) is identified by nonculture methods in Greece, serotyping is of high importance for the better monitoring of pneumococcal serotypes due to the availability of conjugate vaccines. The aim of the study was the modification and direct application of the Capsular Sequence Typing (CST) assay in clinical samples in order to serotype Streptococcus pneumoniae culture-negative, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR_-positive samples, followed by CST group specific single-tube PCR assays. A two-step PCR modified assay was applied on a total of 306 samples

Perioperative Renoprotection: General Mechanisms and Treatment Approaches.

In the perioperative setting, acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication, and AKI itself is associated with adverse outcomes such as higher risk of chronic kidney disease and mortality. Various risk factors are associated with perioperative AKI, and identifying them is crucial to early interventions addressing modifiable risk and increasing monitoring for nonmodifiable risk. Different mechanisms are involved in the development of postoperative AKI, frequently picturing a multifactorial etiology. For these reasons, no single renoprotective strategy will be effective for all surgical p
