Interventions to Improve Outcomes for High-Need, High-Cost Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic disease patients who are the greatest users of healthcare services are often referred to as high-need, high-cost (HNHC). Payers, providers, and policymakers in the United States are interested in identifying interventions that can modify or reduce preventable healthcare use among these patients, without adversely impacting their quality of care and health. We systematically reviewed the evidence on the effectiveness of complex interventions designed to change the healthcare of HNHC patients, modifying cost and utilization, as well as clinical/functional, and social risk fac

Gender-specific research for emergency diagnosis and management of ischemic heart disease: proceedings from the 2014 Academic Emergency Medicine Consensus Conference Cardiovascular Research Workgroup.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of death for both men and women. However, over the years, emergency physicians, cardiologists, and other health care practitioners have observed varying outcomes in men and women with symptomatic CAD. Women in general are 10 to 15 years older than men when they develop CAD, but suffer worse postinfarction outcomes compared to age-matched men. This article was developed by the cardiovascular workgroup at the 2014 Academic Emergency Medicine (AEM) consensus conference to identify sex- and gender-specific gaps in the key themes and research q

FATAL GASTRIC DILATATION AND VOLVULUS IN THREE CAPTIVE JUVENILE LINNAEUS'S TWO-TOED SLOTHS (CHOLOEPUS DIDACTYLUS).

Linnaeus's two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) is one of two extant neotropical species of the family Megalonychidae. Despite their being commonly kept under managed care, the digestive physiology of sloths remains poorly understood. Gastrointestinal disease has been reported as a primary or contributing cause of morbidity and mortality in captive two-toed and three-toed (Bradypus spp.) sloths. Gastric dilatation due to gas accumulation ("bloat") has been reported in sloths; however, a literature search failed to yield any published mention of gastric volvulus in any sloth species. Following

Clinical Characteristics of Acne Fulminans Associated With Chronic Nonbacterial Osteomyelitis in Pediatric Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Acne fulminans (AF) is a rare, explosive systemic form of acne. Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) or chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a primarily pediatric autoinflammatory disorder characterized by sterile osteolytic bone lesions. Concomitant occurrence of CNO/CRMO and AF is very rare, and little is known about the epidemiological and clinical particularities of this association. The aim of this retrospective observational study was to describe the characteristics of pediatric patients with CNO/CRMO associated to AF. METHODS: Electronic mailing lists of

College Education on Dietary Supplements May Promote Responsible Use In Young Adults.

Dietary supplement (DS) use is increasing among college students. Early adulthood is a critical developmental stage when behavioral trends are established with potential health implications. Many studies have suggested a proper college education on DSs is needed, but no follow-up reports exist in the literature. The purpose of the study was to compare DS use in college students with and without a formal education on DSs. An anonymous survey was sent over electronic mailing lists of different social and professional student groups, including students in the health and wellness studies (HWS) min

Creating a state medical response system for medical disaster management: the North Carolina experience.

The purpose of this work was to examine the creation and evolution of the North Carolina state medical response system (SMRS). During the past 30 years, states and local communities have developed a somewhat incongruent patchwork of medical disaster response systems. Several local or regional programs participated in the National Disaster Medical System; however, aside from the Disaster Medical Assistance Teams, most of these local resources lacked national standards and national direction. The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in Washington, DC and New York, and the anthrax-laced letters m

Evaluation of the approaches of different specialties and artificial intelligence systems on traumatic dental injuries.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the knowledge of three artificial intelligence (AI) systems and three dental specialist groups regarding the management of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs). METHODOLOGY: An online survey consisting of three sections was administered: (1) an information sheet with electronic informed consent, (2) five sociodemographic questions, and (3) thirty multiple-choice questions assessing TDI knowledge based on the International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines and current literature. Exploring the impact of controlled substance restrictions on epilepsy care in the United States: A neurologist survey.

RATIONALE: Access to anti-seizure medications (ASMs) is critically important to patients with epilepsy (PWE), given that missed doses can lead to breakthrough seizures, morbidity, or mortality. Numerous ASMs are subject to U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) scheduling regulations. Controlled substance restrictions present barriers to timely medication access. Scheduling restricts ASM access in myriad ways: biometric data and/or physical signature requirements, refill-too-soon policies, and mail-order availability may be restricted. We hypothesized that ASM misuse is rare, but there is

Influence of Altered Sleep Patterns on Health-Related Quality of Life and Academic Performance Among Dental Students: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Sleep plays a vital role in maintaining cognitive function, emotional well-being, and academic performance. Dental students often face unique stressors, such as demanding academic schedules, clinical responsibilities, and irregular sleep patterns, which may negatively affect their sleep quality and overall health. In the Indian context, limited research has explored how sleep-related issues impact both the academic and clinical performance of dental students. This study aimed to assess sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, sleep deprivation, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL),

The experience of diagnosis announcement in rare endocrine diseases: A survey of the French FIRENDO network.

CONTEXT: Diagnosis announcement of a chronic disease is a crucial moment for patients as well as for their families and an important step in the management of severe conditions such as rare endocrine diseases. Little is known of how diagnosis is communicated to patients and families. The FIRENDO network was created by the third French Plan for Rare Diseases, to promote autonomy, care and research on rare endocrine diseases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize, for the first time, the experience and needs of patients and/or their parents around the announcement of diagnosis t

Development, implementation and feedback for an online speciality membership examination in orthodontics during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduction The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCSEng) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (RCPSG) offer the bi-collegiate Membership in Orthodontics (MOrth) examination, a summative assessment of specialist knowledge, skill and behaviour in orthodontics. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound global effect on almost every facet of normal life, including the conduct of face-to-face examinations. We highlight development, implementation and feedback for the bi-collegiate MOrth Part 2 examination delivered remotely to a cohort of candidates in September 2020 by
