A Case of Common Peroneal Nerve Palsy Associated with Internal Iliac Artery Embolization by Using N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA).

A 64-year-old man was scheduled to undergo endovascular aneurysm repair for an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Since preoperative computed tomography showed an AAA with common iliac artery and internal iliac artery (IIA) aneurysms, IIA embolization was scheduled. Embolization using a coil was supposed to be performed; however, the lateral sacral artery could not be selected. For this reason, IIA embolization using N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) was undertaken. During embolization, the median sacral artery was unexpectedly embolized through the lateral sacral artery. The patient complained of

Choroid plexus AVM with anomalous origin of the capsulothalamic artery: A case report.

Background and importance Traditionally, it has been believed that the plexal segment of the anterior choroidal artery (AChoA) can be sacrificed safely. Here, we present a case of choroid plexus arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in which the capsulothalamic artery originated from distal plexal segment of the AChoA. Clinical presentation A 45-year-old man was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation involving the left inferior horn in screening MRI. Preceding stereotactic radiosurgery, transarterial target embolization was performed. In this procedure, 20% n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (NBCA) was suc

Ruptured distal AICA pseudoaneurysm presenting years after vestibular schwannoma resection and radiation.

Distal anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) pseudoaneurysms are very rare lesions. Although cases have been previously reported, only a few have been reported as a result of vestibular schwannoma (VS) radiation, none have been reported as a result of VS resection, and only one has been reported as treated with parent vessel occlusion (PVO) with n-butyl cyanoacrylate (nBCA). We report a case of a 65-year-old man with a history of right-sided VS surgery and radiation who presented years later with a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the distal right AICA and was treated with endovascular PVO usin

Therapeutic endoscopy of localized gastric varices: pretherapy screening and posttreatment evaluation with MDCT portography.

BACKGROUND: Gastric varices are a major cause of gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension. Whatever therapeutic method is used, hemodynamic changes in the portal systemic shunt should be assessed. In this study, we used multi-detector row CT portography as a screening and assessment tool. METHODS: A total of 85 patients with gastroscopy-confirmed gastroesophageal varices underwent multi-detector row CT portography. Patients through multi-detector row CT portography screening were recommended to therapeutic endoscopy. Multi-detector row CT portography was carried out in t

[Therapeutic effect of the endoscopic N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate injection for acute esophagogastric variceal bleeding: comparison with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt].

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Though endoscopic therapies such as variceal ligation and sclerotherapy has been performed, bleeding from the large esophageal and gastric varices still poses significant risk of death. Decrease of portal pressure by TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) or surgical shunt was indicated as cause of failure of endoscopic therapies. Treatment of N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate has been especially effective for gastric variceal bleeding, but comparison with other treatments had not been reported yet. In this study, the effect of cyanoacrylate injection therapy was cross-exa

Variceal bleeding and portal hypertension: has there been any progress in the last 12 months?

A review of the literature on the management of esophagogastric varices published in the last 12 months shows that the data are still quite conflicting. In the primary and secondary prophylaxis of variceal bleeding, beta-blockers are still the mainstay of pharmacotherapy. Measurement of the hepatic portal venous pressure gradient is considered to be a reliable parameter for successful reduction of portal pressure using medical therapy. However, intolerance of propranolol requiring discontinuation of therapy has been observed in approximately 30 % of patients. Patients' compliance with medicati

A randomized controlled trial of cyanoacrylate versus alcohol injection in patients with isolated fundic varices.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment of bleeding gastric varices (GVs) is still controversial, mainly because of anecdotal studies or inclusion of patients with GVs located at different sites that have variable incidences of bleeding. A prospective study was undertaken to compare the efficacy and safety of GV sclerotherapy using alcohol and GV obturation using cyanoacrylate glue. METHODS: Thirty-seven consecutive patients with portal hypertension and endoscopic evidence of isolated GVs, 17 presenting with histories of active bleeding, were randomized to receive endoscopic intervention either with alcohol (n

N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) plus sclerotherapy versus sclerotherapy alone in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices: a randomized prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: N-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) and endoscopic sclerotherapy with polidocanol have both been reported to control variceal bleeding. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of the combination of Histoacryl and endoscopic sclerotherapy with polidocanol in the management of these patients regarding early rebleeding and hospital mortality rates. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred twenty-six consecutive patients with variceal hemorrhage treated with injection therapy between March 1990 and July 1993 were included in this randomized prospective study.

Middle meningeal artery embolization for chronic subdural hematoma using PVA 45-150 particles versus n-BCA glue: a pragmatic study with analysis of estimated cost.

INTRODUCTION: Middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization has increasingly been utilized as a standalone treatment or adjunct to surgical evacuation for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH). Superiority in cost or effectiveness between polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) particles and n-butyl cyanoacrylate (n-BCA) glue, two common embolic agents, has not been definitively demonstrated. METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive MMA embolizations performed between January 2022 to December 2024 at a single institution was completed. All procedures were performed by one of the two senior authors and embolic

Targeted epidural patch with n-butyl cyanoacrylate (n-BCA) through a single catheter access site for treatment of a cerebral spinal fluid leak causing spontaneous intracranial hypotension.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) usually occurs in the setting of a spontaneous cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leak. We report the first description of a case of SIH caused by a CSF leak which improved after a targeted epidural patch with n-butyl cyanoacrylate (n-BCA) at the right T1-T2 level. An 81-year-old woman presented with an orthostatic headache for 6 days. MRI of the brain with contrast demonstrated low lying cerebellar tonsils, an engorged transverse sinus flow void, bifrontal small subdural fluid collections, and diffuse dural enhancement. CT myelography showed extravasation o

Delayed Presentation of Catheter-related Subclavian Artery Pseudoaneurysm.

Central venous catheterization is a common diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in modern clinical practice. Pseudoaneurysms of the subclavian artery are rare and usually occur immediately after the causative event, whether the cause was trauma or a medical procedure. Here, we report a case of a 71-year-old woman with delayed presentation of catheter-related subclavian pseudoaneurysm. The patient's symptoms began two weeks after the initial catheterization, probably because of slow leakage of blood from the injured subclavian artery caused by incomplete compression of the puncture site and ure

A practical guide for diagnosis and treatment of arteriovenous malformations in the oral and maxillofacial region.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are congenital vascular malformations (CVMs) resulting from birth defects of the vasculature. It is rarely seen, only accounting for 1.5% of all vascular anomalies, and 50% of the lesions are located in the oral and maxillofacial region. Regardless of the type, AVMs may ultimately lead to significant anatomical, pathophysiological and hemodynamic consequences. Therefore, despite their relative rarity, AVMs still remain the most challenging and/or life-threatening form of vascular anomalies. Transarterial coil embolisation or ligation of feeding arteries are i
