A correlative analysis of epidemiologic and molecular characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus clones from diverse geographic locations with virulence measured by a Caenorhabditis elegans host model.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains from different geographic areas have different genetic backgrounds, suggesting independent clonal evolutions. To better understand the virulence of MRSA strains and the relationship to their clonal and geographic origins, we undertook an analysis of epidemiologic, molecular, and virulence characteristics of a large number of MRSA isolates from geographically diverse origins, in a Caenorhabditis elegans infection model. A total of 99 MRSA isolates collected between 1993 and 2010 at the Geneva University Hospitals from diverse global ori

A mathematical epidemiological model of gram-negative Bartonella bacteria: does differential ectoparasite load fully explain the differences in infection prevalence of Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus?

We postulate that the large difference in infection prevalence, 24% versus 5%, in R. norvegicus and R. rattus, respectively, between these two co-occurring host species may be due to differences in ectoparasite and potential vector infestation rates. A compartmental model, representative of an infectious system containing these two Rattus species and two ectoparasite vectors, was constructed and the coefficients of the forces of infection determined mathematically. The maximum difference obtained by the model in the prevalence of Bartonella in the two Rattus species amounts to 4.6%, compared t

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory induced upper gastrointestinal event rates in patients awaiting joint replacement in the United Kingdom. An epidemiologically-based burden of disease model.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the likely morbidity associated with upper gastrointestinal (GI) ulceration associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in patients awaiting hip and knee replacement surgery. METHOD: A burden of disease model was constructed, using Hospital Episode Statistics from the Department of Health in England, selected patient cohorts drawn from a pooled anonymised general practice database (MediPlus) and NSAID risk assessments from the published literature. Based on mean derived waiting times from the point of referral to admission for procedure and

Prediction of relative survival trends in patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma using a model-based period analysis: a retrospective analysis of the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database.

OBJECTIVES: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) represents a malignancy characterised by the aberrant proliferation of skin epithelial cells, and certain instances of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) exhibit features indicative of a heightened proclivity for recurrence, metastasis, and mortality. Tracking the latest survival rates for CSCC is crucial for patient care and public health strategies. DESIGN: This was a retrospective study. SETTING: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Programme database was established by the National Cancer Institute in 1973. It is one of th

The epidemiological trend of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Kegalle district, Sri Lanka: A newly established disease focus and assessment of bioclimatic suitability for disease establishment using ecological niche modelling.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is prevalent in Sri Lanka since 1992. It remains as a health issue with increasing numbers and spreading from endemic to non-endemic areas in the county. Kegalle district is a new disease focus, which notified the first case in 2016. However, there is no documented evidence of the vector distribution, abundance and potential risk factors in this district. Two Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas (Rambukkana and Warakapola) that had reported the highest numbers of cases in the Kagalle district was selected and recorded cases (2016-2020) were obtained. The patients were

The Impact of Screening and Partner Notification on Chlamydia Prevalence and Numbers of Infections Averted in the United States, 2000-2015: Evaluation of Epidemiologic Trends Using a Pair-Formation Transmission Model.

Population-level effects of control strategies on the dynamics of Chlamydia trachomatis transmission are difficult to quantify. In this study, we calibrated a novel sex- and age-stratified pair-formation transmission model of chlamydial infection to epidemiologic data in the United States for 2000-2015. We used sex- and age-specific prevalence estimates from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, case report data from national chlamydia surveillance, and survey data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey on the proportion of the sexually active population aged 15-18 years. We were

Community optometrist referral of those aged 65 and over for raised IOP post-NICE: AOP guidance versus joint college guidance--an epidemiological model using BEAP.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To identify the percentage of those aged 65 and over who might be referred by community optometrists as ocular hypertensive suspects in the post-NICE era when differing guidance is followed by community optometrists. METHOD: The authors constructed an epidemiologically based model utilising Bridlington Eye Assessment Project (BEAP) data. Ocular hypertensive suspects' data were subjected to two algorithms (Association of Optometrists (AOP) and Joint College) to determine referral of suspects if community optometrists followed either algorithm. RESULTS: 85 of 1643 people (5.2%

Application of a joint latent space item response model to clustering stressful life events and the Beck Depression Inventory-II: results from Korean epidemiological survey data.

OBJECTIVES: According to previous findings, stressful life events (SLEs) and their subtypes are associated with depressive symptoms. However, few studies have explored potential models for these events and incidental symptoms of depression. METHODS: Participants (3,966 men; 5,709 women) were recruited from the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases Etiology Research Center cohort. SLEs were measured using a 47-item Life Experiences Survey (LES) with a standardized protocol. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). The epidemiology of schistosomiasis in the later stages of a control programme based on chemotherapy: the Basrah study. 3. Antibody distributions and the use of age catalytic models and log-probit analysis in seroepidemiology.

A comparative seroepidemiological survey of Schistosoma haematobium infection among primary schoolchildren in areas of different levels and patterns of endemicity in Basrah governorate, southern Iraq, also covered all inhabitants of Al-maadan locality, a known endemic focus in Basrah. Blood samples were tested by the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Serological data were analysed to describe the pattern of distribution of antischistosomal antibodies, to relate the level of infection to age and sex, and to estimate the force of infection per year by applying age catalytic models. Preparedness of the Ghana Health Service for field epidemiology and applied biostatistics: a systematic review of infectious disease surveillance, outbreak investigation methodologies, and statistical modeling capacities in resource-limited settings.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious disease outbreaks continue to threaten global health security, with resource-limited settings facing disproportionate challenges in surveillance, outbreak investigation, and applied biostatistical capacity. The WHO International Health Regulations 2005 framework defines preparedness through measurable core capacities, and seminal multi-country analyses of IHR State Party Self-Assessment Annual Reporting data from 182 and 186 countries consistently show that sub-Saharan African countries report the largest preparedness gaps globally. Ghana, despite hosting the first Fie

Epidemiologic Impact of Prioritizing Long-Acting Injectable Cabotegravir to Men Who Have Sex With Men With Low Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Use Adherence in the Netherlands: A Mathematical Modeling Study.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), given once every 8 weeks, has been found to have superior efficacy over oral PrEP among men who have sex with men (MSM). We compared the epidemiologic impact of expanding CAB-LA to current oral PrEP users with different levels of adherence, and non-PrEP users among MSM in the Netherlands. METHODS: An MSM HIV transmission model was calibrated to the Dutch MSM HIV epidemic. The real-world effectiveness of daily oral-PrEP was assumed to decrease by users' adherence levels: High (defined as >75% of the da

Prognostic factors and overall survival for second primary malignancies in myelodysplastic syndromes: a Cox regression coupled with competing risk model based on Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

BACKGROUND: With therapeutic advancements improving survival outcomes in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), an increasing proportion of patients are at risk of developing second primary malignancies (SPMs). Nevertheless, the clinical profile, prognostic determinants, and overall survival (OS) of SPMs in this population remain inadequately characterized. This study sought to delineate the clinical features of SPMs in MDS patients and construct a predictive nomogram for overall survival (OS) in MDS-SPM (MSP) patients. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Result

Second primary malignancy risk after thymic epithelial tumors: a Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results analysis integrating multiple primary-standardized incidence ratio and competing-risk models.

BACKGROUND: Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are rare, but with improving survival, second primary malignancies (SPM) are an emerging concern. This study aimed to characterize the overall, site-specific, and latency-dependent risk of SPM after TETs and to identify clinical predictors using multiple primary-standardized incidence ratio and competing-risk models. METHODS: Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 17 registries (2000-2022), we identified patients with microscopically confirmed TETs. Multiple primary-standardized incidence ratio (MP-SIR) analyses in SEER*Stat were u

Hemoglobin A1c Level and Cardiovascular Disease Incidence in Persons With Type 1 Diabetes: An Application of Joint Modeling of Longitudinal and Time-to-Event Data in the Pittsburgh Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications Study.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but hyperglycemia (measured by hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level), which characterizes T1D, has itself been an inconsistent predictor of CVD incidence. However, only baseline HbA1c or a summary measure (e.g., mean level over follow-up) is usually analyzed. Joint models allow simultaneous modeling of repeatedly measured longitudinal covariates, using random effects, and time-to-event data. We evaluated data from the Pittsburgh Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications Study, an ongoing prospective cohort study of c

Seasonal variations of Triatoma dimidiata demography and Trypanosoma cruzi transmission within its multi-host community in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico: Insights from an integrative SIR eco-epidemiological modelling.

Chagas disease is a zoonotic disease affecting 7 million people worldwide, mostly in Latin America. The causative agent, Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted by triatomine vectors feeding on a high diversity of vertebrate species. To understand its complex transmission dynamics is critical to assess disease risk and potential control strategies. We expanded a previous SI model of T. cruzi transmission in a typical synanthropic and domesticated host community into a SIR model to account for the effect of seasonal variations in the stage-structured vector demography and for the within-host parasite

Prognostic impact of treatment modalities and examined lymph nodes count on survival in T3-4 esophageal cancer: a retrospective cohort and predictive modeling study from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal carcinoma (EC) is a malignancy of significant global burden, characterized by high incidence and mortality rates. The majority of patients are diagnosed with advanced disease. While surgery-based multimodality therapy is standard for resectable disease at this stage, the optimal strategy requires further definition. Concurrently, the impact of the number of examined lymph nodes (ELNs) on patient prognosis across different treatment modalities remains to be further explored. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic impacts of different treatment modalities and the c

Assessing the co-occurrence of psychopathology and resilience: Evidence for the dual-factor model of mental health using a data-driven approach from a multi-ethnic youth epidemiology study in south-east Asia.

BACKGROUND: While studies have consistently shown that resilience is a protective factor for youth psychopathology, less is known about the co-occurrence between resilience and youth psychopathology symptoms particularly in the south-east Asian context, based on the dual-factor model (DFM) of mental health. METHODS: Data was taken from the nationally-representative Youth Epidemiology and Resilience (YEAR) study conducted in Singapore. The analysis, which included 3336 Singapore youth aged 10 to 18, used a person-centered approach (i.e. Latent Profile Analysis) to identify subgroups of youths
