The present article reports the treatment of a 7-year-old girl with maxillary hypoplasia associated with multiple tooth agenesis through maxillary protraction with skeletal anchorage and pterygomaxillary separation. Two titanium mini-plates were placed in the lateral region of the nasal cavity and used as anchorage for maxillary protraction with a reverse-pull facemask. Pterygomaxillary separation was also performed to enhance the effects of maxillary protraction. One week after surgery, 300 g of force was applied on each side to protract the maxilla. Active treatment time was 4 months, with 1

This case report describes the treatment of a boy with both central maxillary incisors impacted because of 2 supernumerary teeth. Therapeutic management of the impacted teeth was combined with orthodontic treatment of a Class II Division 1 malocclusion. A sequential approach of surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth with 2 stages of surgical exposure and orthodontic traction of the impacted teeth resulted in proper incisor positioning. Close monitoring and multidisciplinary cooperation during the various treatment phases led to a successful esthetic result, with good periodontal health an

Skeletal Class III malocclusions are ideally treated with orthodontic-surgical approaches. However, if there are no significant soft tissue implications and the patient does not want to undergo orthognatic surgery, other treatment options may be considered. The current case report describes a compensatory alternative for Class III malocclusion treatment, by means of mandibular canine extractions. This treatment alternative provided facial profile and occlusal improvement, which remains stable seven years posttreatment.

Correct determination of the occlusal plane is one of the most difficult stages of treatment. After determining the correct occlusal plane its reproduction is possible thanks to the use of articulators. These instruments simulate movements of the jaw in three planes. One of the most optimal articulators is a semi-adjustable type. These instruments are not complicated and give good treatment results. A modern semiadjustable type of articulator is Quick Master. The face-bow which comes together with this instrument is used for recording and transferring the occlusal relation to the articulator.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate upper airway changes related to craniofacial changes induced by a facemask (FM) combined with Le Fort I osteotomy without down-fracture in Class III maxillary retrusion subjects (group 1) when compared with a similar group of subjects treated with traditional rapid palatal expansion and FM therapy. Pre- (T1) and post- (T2) protraction cephalometric radiographs of group 1 (10 females and 6 males; mean age 12.75 ± 1.91 years) and group 2 (7 females and 9 males; mean age 12 ± 1.7 years) were traced. In the past orthodontists frequently used extra-oral force to slow down skeletal growth in their treatment of Class II malocclusions; more modern practice relies less on applying distal force to the maxilla than on stimulating forward growth of the mandible. Does this change in therapeutic design have any repercussions in facial esthetics? To evaluate the impact of treatment on the appearance of the profile, we conducted a study with 64 patients in the adolescent dentition stage with a Class II, division 1 malocclusions. None had teeth extracted or preliminary orthodontic treatment. We divided

This study evaluated the effectiveness of two interceptive approaches to palatally displaced canines (PDC), i.e. extraction of the primary canines alone or in association with the use of a cervical-pull headgear. The randomized prospective design comprised 75 subjects with PDC (92 maxillary canines) who were randomly assigned to three groups: extraction of the primary canine only (EG), extraction of the primary canine and cervical-pull headgear (EHG), and an untreated control group (CG). Panoramic radiographs were evaluated at the time of initial observation (T1) and after an average period of

This cephalometric study evaluated skeletal and dentoalveolar changes produced by rapid maxillary expansion and facial mask therapy in 85 subjects exhibiting a Class III malocclusion with a retruded maxilla. The skeletal maturity of individual patients was assessed on the basis of Fishman's skeletal maturity indicator (SMI), using hand-wrist radiographs at the initiation of treatment, to determine the relationship between the effect of maxillary protraction and skeletal age. Patients were divided into three groups: prepubertal growth peak group (SMI 1-3), pubertal growth peak group (SMI 4-7),

Since 1977 cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients with maxillary deficiency have received an interceptive orthopedic treatment consisting of (a) transverse expansion, (b) protraction, and (c) fixed retention. Ideally the treatment should be completed early enough to permit spontaneous eruption of the maxillary permanent incisors into normal occlusion without orthodontic intervention. The early transverse expansion considerably increases space so that unerupted malpositioned incisors spread out spontaneously, creating optimal conditions for eruption and root formation. Dental diagnosis in the clef

This study investigated incisor trauma in children with overjets greater than or equal to 7 mm who were enrolled in a clinical trial of 2-phase early orthodontic treatment for Class II malocclusion. In phase 1, children were randomly assigned to treatment in the mixed dentition with either modified bionator or combination headgear or to a group in which treatment was delayed until the permanent dentition. All children received comprehensive treatment during phase 2 if necessary. At the start of the trial, 29.1% of the patients had already had some incisor trauma. This was not significantly rel

INTRODUCTION: Patients with Class II subdivision malocclusions are a challenge for clinicians because reestablishing symmetry in 1 arch or both arches is often a treatment goal. In patients with mandibular skeletal asymmetry, surgery is often a treatment option. However, patients may be unwilling to undergo surgery, and other options might have to be considered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the etiologies and outcomes of Class II subdivision patients treated at the University of Washington graduate orthodontic clinic in Seattle from 1995 through 2011.
METHODS: A search of patients tr

Bi-maxillary protrusion in adolescent patients has traditionally been treated by extraction of the four first premolars and retraction ofthe anterior teeth. The ectopic eruption of the maxiIlary permanent canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem. Orthodontic treatment of the impacted teeth remains a challenge for clinicians. If it is associated with other dental and skeletalproblems, there will be further complications to the treatment plan. In such cases, if we extract canines, then problems with this approach are restricted to anatomical and functional limitations ofpremolars sub

This case report describes the retreatment of a patient with Marfan syndrome whose earlier orthodontic and surgical treatment had been unsuccessful. Marfan syndrome is an inherited connective tissue disorder transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. The disorder results from molecular defects in the fibrillin gene that are responsible for the impaired structural integrity of the skeletal, ocular, and cardiovascular systems. When she sought retreatment, the patient had an open bite, mandibular anterior crowding, severe root resorption, and temporomandibular joint derangement with some resorpt
