Fear of breast cancer among young Spanish women: Factor structure and psychometric properties of the Champion breast cancer fear scale.

Heightened fear of breast cancer (FBC) has been linked to increased distress following breast cancer diagnosis and to avoidance of mammography screening. To our knowledge, however, no studies have examined the nature of FBC exclusively among young females, even though they are overrepresented in media stories of breast cancer. Given that no instruments are available to assess FBC in the Spanish language, we sought to 1) evaluate the psychometric properties and factor structure of the Champion Breast Cancer Fear Scale (CBCFS), and 2) offer preliminary data on the nature of FBC among young women

Fear and Prompting: AI, Originary Technicity, and Colonialism.

This paper examines psychoanalysts' affective and defensive responses to artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of originary technicity, the philosophical claim that technology is constitutive of the human rather than external to it. Drawing on Freudian theory-particularly the uncanny-alongside object relations and posthumanist thought, the author argues that psychotherapy's moral panic about AI reflects a splitting of the human from the technological that mirrors colonialist Subject/Other dualisms. Prompts are explored as drive derivatives, and the dyadic engagement between user and ch

Localization of ictal fear and related brain network.

BACKGROUND: Ictal fear (IF) is a common psychiatric manifestation in focal epilepsy, yet its electrophysiological mechanisms and associated brain networks remain poorly understood. Existing models are largely extrapolated from canonical fear-processing frameworks rather than direct intracranial evidence. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) recordings from patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who exhibited clinically and electrophysiologically confirmed IF. Epileptogenicity Index (EI) analysis was used to classify brain regions into epileptogenic, propaga

Our age of anxiety: fear, unease and worry.

Anxiety disorders are distressing and impairing and may be becoming more prevalent. There remains much uncertainty about key factors in the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders, which may underpin some of the limitations of existing psychological, pharmacological and other treatments.

Rational and irrational sociopolitical anxiety: Fear of cancellation.

Fear of cancellation, whether rational or irrational, is a contemporary psychopathological and sociopolitical condition. While social ostracism and exclusion have always, to some extent, been a deeply human fear, ties to innovations like the internet and social media make fear of cancellation a uniquely modern phenomenon. Fear of cancellation presents across diagnoses, including generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and social anxiety disorder, and can include excessive review of prior content for potentially offensive material or even abstaining from social media use al

DNA methylation regulates the extinction of fear memory.

BACKGROUND: Fear-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), significantly impact patients and families. Exposure therapy is a common treatment, but improving its effectiveness remains a key challenge. Fear conditioning and extinction in animal models offer insights into its mechanisms. Our previous research indicates that DNA methyltransferases play a role in fear memory renewal. AIM: To investigate the role of DNA methylation in the extinction of fear memory, with the goal of identifying potential strategies to enhance the efficacy of exposure therapy for fear-related

Ethograms predict visual fear conditioning status in rats.

Recognizing and responding to threat cues is essential to survival. Freezing is a predominant threat behavior in rats. We have recently shown that a threat cue can organize diverse behaviors beyond freezing, including locomotion (Chu et al., 2024). However, that experimental design was complex, required many sessions, and had rats receive many foot shock presentations. Moreover, the findings were descriptive. Here, we gave female and male Long Evans rats cue light illumination paired or unpaired with foot shock (eight total) in a conditioned suppression setting using a range of shock intensiti

Prefrontal correlates of fear generalization during endocannabinoid depletion.

Maladaptive fear generalization is one of the hallmarks of trauma-related disorders. The endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) is crucial for modulating anxiety, fear, and stress adaptation, but its role in balancing fear discrimination versus generalization is not known. To address this, we used a combination of plasma endocannabinoid measurement and neuroimaging in a childhood maltreatment-exposed and -nonexposed mixed population, combined with human and rodent fear-conditioning models. Here we show that 2-AG levels were inversely associated with fear generalization at the behavioral

Cognitive processing biases associated with fear of childbirth.

Fear of childbirth (FOC) is a phobic-like response concerning the prospect of giving birth. FOC can have negative implications for women during pregnancy and can impact their birthing experience. Cognitive processing biases (e.g., difficulty disengaging from threatening information, interpreting ambiguous information as threatening, and preferentially recalling threatening content) have previously been found to maintain general anxiety and low mood. To date, there has been no research assessing these attention, interpretation, and memory biases and their relationship with FOC in pregnant women

Catching a Liar Through Facial Expression of Fear.

High stakes can be stressful whether one is telling the truth or lying. However, liars can feel extra fear from worrying to be discovered than truth-tellers, and according to the "leakage theory," the fear is almost impossible to be repressed. Therefore, we assumed that analyzing the facial expression of fear could reveal deceits. Detecting and analyzing the subtle leaked fear facial expressions is a challenging task for laypeople. It is, however, a relatively easy job for computer vision and machine learning. To test the hypothesis, we analyzed video clips from a game show "The moment of trut

Genetic Architecture of Innate Fear Behavior in Chickens.

The genetic architecture of innate fear behavior in chickens is poorly understood. Here, we performed quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis of innate responses to tonic immobility (TI) and open field (OF) fears in 242 newly hatched chicks of an F2 population between the native Japanese Nagoya breed and the White Leghorn breed using 881 single nucleotide polymorphism markers obtained by restriction site-associated DNA sequencing. At genome-wide 5% significance levels, four QTL for TI traits were revealed on chromosomes 1-3 and 24. Two of these loci had sex-specific effects on the traits. For O

Predicting blood donation intention: the importance of fear.

BACKGROUND: Blood donor recruitment remains an important worldwide challenge due to changes in population demographics and shifts in the demand for blood. Various cognitive models help predict donation intention, although the importance of affective deterrents has become increasingly evident. This study aimed to identify fears that predict donation intention, to explore their relative importance, and to determine if self-efficacy and attitude mediate this relationship, thus providing possible targets for intervention. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 347 individuals (269 nondonors and 78

Augmented fear bradycardia in rats with heart failure.

In congestive heart failure (CHF), while resting parasympathetic activity becomes reduced, parasympathetically-mediated responses to stressors have not been described. This study aimed to (1) elucidate the effect of CHF on fear bradycardia, a parasympathetically-mediated response, and (2) examine if brain oxidative stress of CHF mediates fear bradycardia. White noise sound (WNS) exposure to conscious rats induced freezing behavior and elicited bradycardia. WNS exposure-elicited bradycardia was greater in rats with CHF than in controls. Superoxide dismutase mimetics administered in the lateral/

Tokophobia (fear of childbirth): prevalence and risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence of and to determine the risk factors for developing a fear of childbirth (tokophobia). METHODS: We evaluated 191 pregnant women during Parenting and Childbirth Classes. Participants were approached when attending Parenting and Childbirth Classes between June 2014 and September 2014 and were asked to complete several questionnaires related to depression (CES-D), anxiety (STAI X1 and X2), satisfaction with life (SWLS), delivery expectation/experience (W-DEQ), and specific fears. RESULTS: Most (90%) of the responders were nulliparous. As many as 75% of the

Brain activation during fear extinction predicts exposure success.

BACKGROUND: Exposure therapy, a gold-standard treatment for anxiety disorders, is assumed to work via extinction learning, but this has never been tested. Anxious individuals demonstrate extinction learning deficits, likely related to less ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and more amygdala activation, but the relationship between these deficits and exposure outcome is unknown. We tested whether anxious individuals who demonstrate better extinction learning report greater anxiety reduction following brief exposure. METHODS: Twenty-four adults with public speaking anxiety completed (1) fu
