Flushing of intravascular access devices (IVADs) - efficacy of pulsed and continuous infusions.

PURPOSE: To compare, under controlled conditions similar to practical situations, the efficacy of pulsed and continuous infusion for flushing IVADs. For both of them different flow rates, flushing volumes, and times were tested. METHODS: The PU catheter lumens were filled with a mixture of fibronectin and bovine albumin to simulate physiologic protein depot. Flushing was performed with normal saline. An adapted pump controlled the flow rates. Efficacy was measured by the amount of albumin recovered from the lumen of the tested devices. Flow rate, volumes, and times tested were based upon valu

Flushing induction chambers used for rodent anesthesia to reduce waste anesthetic gas.

Anesthetic induction chambers used for medical research are a substantial source of waste anesthetic gas (WAG). Ideally, any generated waste gas should be actively vented away from personnel operating the chamber by either a ventilated hood or snorkel. Unfortunately, the ideal environment for anesthetizing rodents is not always available. In an effort to create a safer environment, the authors designed a system to reduce WAG. This system is portable, can be adapted to different precision vaporizing anesthetic systems and fits in a variety of physical locations. The system flushes anesthetic ga

Real-time control of combined surface water quantity and quality: polder flushing.

In open water systems, keeping both water depths and water quality at specified values is critical for maintaining a 'Работает' water system. Many systems still require manual operation, at least for water quality management. When applying real-time control, both quantity and quality standards need to be met. In this paper, an artificial polder flushing case is studied. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is developed to control the system. In addition to MPC, a 'forward estimation' procedure is used to acquire water quality predictions for the simplified model used in MPC optimization. In order to

Flushing and other dermatologic adverse events associated with extended-release niacin therapy.

BACKGROUND: Niacin lowers levels of atherogenic apolipoprotein-B-containing lipoproteins, including lipoprotein(a), and raises levels of atheroprotective high-density lipoproteins. However, cutaneous flushing has been a major impediment to the clinical use of niacin. OBJECTIVE: Extended-release niacin (niacin ER) is a once-daily prescription niacin formulated to limit flushing. An analysis of flushing events with niacin ER should facilitate its clinical use. METHODS: The analysis pools previously unpublished data on flushing and related side effects from four randomized, double-blind studies

Opiate antagonist nalmefene inhibits ethanol-induced flushing in Asians: a preliminary study.

Ethanol-induced flushing (EIF) occurs in up to 80% of Asians and is characterized by facial flushing, tachycardia, and increased cardiac output. Since endogenous opiates and prostaglandins may be mediators of flushing syndromes, we attempted to block EIF in four Asian flushers with single doses of either the opiate antagonist nalmefene, or the prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor indomethacin. Nonflushers (2 Caucasian, 2 Asian) and four Asian flushers were given on separate days water, ethanol (0.4 g/kg p.o.), ethanol plus nalmefene (2 mg i.v.), or ethanol plus indomethacin (50 mg p.o.). Ethanol

Transient Whitish Change in the Gastric Mucosa Induced by Water-Jet Flushing.

Localized transient whitening of the gastric mucosa after water-jet flushing through the auxiliary water channel is rarely described. We report a 49-year-old man who underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection for a 5-mm gastric-type neoplasm on the greater curvature of the lower gastric body. During washing of adjacent non-lesional mucosa, strong auxiliary water-channel flushing for approximately 2-5 s was followed by a focal whitish linear change confined to the flushed area, which became evident approximately 10 s after flushing was stopped and persisted for approximately 30 s before resolvi

Peritoneal dialysis catheter flushing in children: A national survey of practice patterns.

BackgroundPeritoneal dialysis (PD) is widely used for the management of pediatric kidney failure due to quality-of-life advantages. However, practices for PD catheter flushing between placement and dialysis initiation are not well standardized and rely largely on expert opinion. This study aimed to characterize variation in flushing practices across U.S. pediatric centers.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey of Standardizing Care to Improve Outcomes in Pediatric End-Stage Kidney Disease (SCOPE)-affiliated pediatric PD programs. Mapping existing research on flushing peripheral vascular catheters: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral vascular catheter (PVC) is the most common intravenous medical device used in hospitals, given it is crucial for the delivery of intravenous therapies. Despite its widespread use, PVC complications such as occlusion, infiltration, extravasation, phlebitis, thrombophlebitis, catheter-related thrombosis and catheter-related bloodstream infection significantly affect patient safety, leading to increased morbidity and healthcare costs. One approach to maintain PVC patency and therefore device longevity is to flush the PVC. This usually involves the use of 5 to 10 mL sy

Hemodynamics of Saline Flushing in Endoscopic Imaging of Partially Occluded Coronary Arteries.

PURPOSE: Intravascular endoscopy can aid in the diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis by providing direct color images of coronary plaques. The procedure requires a blood-free optical path between the catheter and plaque, and achieving clearance safely remains an engineering challenge. In this study, we investigate the hemodynamics of saline flushing in partially occluded coronary arteries to advance the development of intravascular forward-imaging catheters that do not require balloon occlusion. METHODS: In-vitro experiments and CFD simulations are used to quantify the influence of plaque si

Potential Role of Tranexamic Acid in Rosacea Treatment: conquering Flushing Beyond Melasma.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects a patient's appearance and quality of life. It mainly affects the midface region and presents as erythema, flushing, telangiectasia, papules, pustules, and rhinophyma. Despite its prevalence, the precise pathophysiology of rosacea remains unknown, and novel pharmacological therapies are currently under investigation. Tranexamic acid (TA) is a synthetic, lysine-like compound that competitively inhibits fibrinogen production by synthesizing fibrinolytic enzymes. In addition to its popular application in hemorrhage treatment, TA has been

Controlling Legionella pneumophila in Showerheads: Combination of Remedial Intervention and Preventative Flushing.

Shock chlorination and remedial flushing are suggested to address Legionella pneumophila (Lp) contamination in buildings or during their (re)commissioning. However, data on general microbial measurements (adenosine tri-phosphate [ATP], total cell counts [TCC]), and the abundance of Lp are lacking to support their temporary implementation with variable water demands. In this study, the weekly short-term (3-week) impact of shock chlorination (20-25 mg/L free chlorine, 16 h) or remedial flushing (5-min flush) combined with distinct flushing regimes (daily, weekly, stagnant) was investigated in du

Eco-efficiency analysis of water distribution system flushing into a containment Pond.

For a salt or other conservative contaminant contamination event in a water distribution system, opening fire hydrants to flush the system is currently an accepted decontamination method. However, all the contaminated flushed water is discharged to the local surroundings of the fire hydrants and imposes an environmental impact. Another system decontamination alternative can be using a containment pond to catch the contaminated water. To reduce environmental impacts of flushing salt from a water distribution system a comparative life cycle assessment study has been performed for both convention

Effects of sediment flushing operations versus natural floods on Chinook salmon survival.

Flushing is a common measure to manage and reduce the amount of sediment stored in reservoirs. However, the sudden release of large volumes of sediment abruptly increases the suspended solids concentration and alters the riverbed composition. Similar effects can be produced also by natural flood events. Do flushing operations have more detrimental impacts than natural floods? To answer this question, we investigated the impact of flushing on the survival of the Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Sandy River (OR, USA), assuming that sediment is flushed from hypothetical bottom gat

Particle exposure risk to a lavatory user after flushing a squat toilet.

Squat toilets are widely used in developing countries due to local customs and low costs. The flushing of a squat toilet can entrain strong airflow and produce aerosols. This investigation constructed a lavatory mock-up with a squat toilet. The flushing-induced airflow was both visualized and quantitatively measured by particle image velocimetry. The maximum height of the impacted airflow was identified by an ultrasonic anemometer. For inference of the particle emission rate, the toilet bowl was covered by an enclosed box for particle concentration measurement. The risks from skin contact of t
