BackgroundUnilateral hemispheric stroke can impair the ipsilesional motor performance, which is crucial for attaining optimal functional outcomes poststroke. However, the specific brain structures contributing to ipsilesional motor performance impairment remain unclear.ObjectiveTo explore the link between ipsilesional motor performance and the microstructural integrity of relevant neural pathways.MethodsThis study enrolled 60 consecutive patients in the early subacute phase of stroke recovery. Ipsilesional motor performance was assessed using the Box and Block Test. Multiple linear regression

Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is classically considered a 'pure' upper motor neuron disorder. Motor cortex atrophy and pyramidal tract degeneration are thought to be pathognomonic of PLS, but extra-motor cerebral changes are poorly characterized. In a prospective neuroimaging study, forty PLS patients were systematically evaluated with a standardised imaging, genetic and clinical protocol. Patients were screened for ALS and HSP associated mutations, as well as C9orf72 hexanucleotide repeats. Clinical assessment included composite reflex scores, spasticity scales, functional rating scales, an

IMPORTANCE: There is limited research examining the association of antenatal opioid exposure with neonatal brain microstructure, particularly within the limbic system, which contains high concentrations of opioid receptors. Prior studies investigating microstructural changes in major white matter tracts were underpowered and lacked matched controls.
OBJECTIVE: To compare limbic system microstructure between neonates who were opioid exposed and unexposed.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study assessed diffusion tensor imaging of neonates enrolled in the Outcomes of Babies

CD44 is a cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion during neurite outgrowth, leukocyte homing, and tumor metastasis. In the current study, we examined the regulation of this molecule 4 days after neural trauma in different forms of central and peripheral injury. Transection of the hypoglossal, vagus, or sciatic nerve led to the appearance of CD44-immunoreactivity (CD44-IR) on the surface of the affected motoneurons, their dendrites, and their axons. Fimbria fornix transection led to CD44-IR on a subpopulation of cholinergic neurons in the ipsi- and contralateral medial septum and di

BACKGROUND: Serendipity and observations have a noble tradition in medicine, including neurology, and are responsible for many medical treatments (carbamazepine for tic douloureux, amantadine for Parkinson's disease, gabapentin for restless legs…). We aimed at examining the contribution of serendipity and observations to functional neurosurgery. Scholarly publications relevant to the history of functional neurosurgery for movement and psychiatric disorders were reviewed, starting from the pre-stereotactic era. The documents were scrutinized with respect to indications for surgery, surgical met

BACKGROUND: Several cognitive, neuroimaging, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers predict conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, predictors might be more or less powerful depending on the characteristics of the MCI sample.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate which cognitive markers and biomarkers predict conversion to AD dementia and course of cognitive functioning in a MCI sample with a high proportion of early-stage MCI patients.
METHODS: Variables known to predict progression in MCI patients and hypothesized to predict progression in early-st

Malformations of the corpus callosum (CC) may occur in many different syndromes. Various forms have been observed. We report seven cases of malformation of the CC. Special attention is directed towards the development of the fornix and hippocampus as a hippocampal commissure is a prerequisite of normal hippocampal development. The clinical disability of the patients presented here differed significantly, which may in part be due to the different extent of this cerebral malformation. The relevance of the concomitant aplasia of the limbic system has not been addressed in detail previously in the

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that infants born very preterm (VP) are at risk of brain injury and altered brain development in the neonatal period, however there is a lack of long-term, longitudinal studies on the effects of VP birth on white matter development over childhood. Most previous studies were based on voxel-averaged, non-fibre-specific diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures, such as fractional anisotropy. In contrast, the novel diffusion MRI analysis framework, fixel-based analysis (FBA), enables whole-brain analysis of microstructural and macrostructural properties

INTRODUCTION: Susac Syndrome is an autoimmune endotheliopathy affecting capillaries and precapillary arterioles of the brain, inner ear and retina. The classic symptom triad includes visual disturbances, hypoacusia, and encephalopathy, but is rarely fully manifest at onset. The syndrome typically follows an active fluctuating monophasic course. Typical imaging findings on brain magnetic resonance show central fiber microischemias/microinfarctions of the corpus callosum known as "snow balls", as well as lineal infarcts and upper callosal fiber involvement. Fluorescein angiography and tonal audi

Septum pellucidum (SP) and cavum SP (CSP) were delineated in two samples. The Longitudinal Study examined structural MR-images in first-episode schizophrenia (FESZ) and controls at two time-points. The Cross-Sectional Study examined structural and diffusion-tensor MR measures, including hippocampus and fornix, in chronic schizophrenia (SZ) at one time-point. CSP and SP measurements remained stable over time in FESZ and controls. Compared to controls, CSP were smaller in FESZ, but not in chronic SZ. SP were larger in chronic SZ, but not in FESZ. In chronic SZ only, SP-Length was correlated nega

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health during pregnancy can influence fetal brain development, yet its long-term effects remain unclear. This study investigates the association between prenatal maternal depression and anxiety symptoms and white matter microstructure in the limbic system of 8-year-old children.
METHODS: Fifty-one healthy pregnant women and typically developing 8-year-old children dyads were included in this prospective and longitudinal study. Maternal depression and anxiety symptoms were assessed at 12, 24, and 36 weeks of gestation using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II)

Diffusion tensor imaging has already been extensively used to probe microstructural alterations in white matter tracts, and scarcely, in deep gray matter. However, results in literature regarding age-related degenerative mechanisms in white matter tracts and parametric changes in the putamen are inconsistent. Diffusional kurtosis imaging is a mathematical extension of diffusion tensor imaging, which could more comprehensively mirror microstructure, particularly in isotropic tissues such as gray matter. In this study, we used the diffusional kurtosis imaging method and a white-matter model that

The distribution of vasoactive intestinal peptide binding sites in the rat brain was examined by in vitro autoradiography on slide-mounted sections. A fully characterized monoiodinated form of vasoactive intestinal peptide (M-[125I]VIP) previously shown to maintain in the central nervous system the full biological activity of native vasoactive intestinal peptide was used for this study. In initial kinetic and pharmacological experiments the binding of M-[125I]vasoactive intestinal peptide to slide-mounted sections was shown to be time-dependent, saturable and reversible. Association of M-[125I

Processing of multimodal sensory information by the morphological subdivisions of the hippocampus and its input and output structures was investigated in unanesthetized rabbits by extracellular recording of neuronal activity. Analysis shows principal differences between CA3 neurons with uniform multimodal, mainly inhibitory, rapidly habituating sensory responses, and CA1-subicular neurons, substantial parts of which have phasic reactions and patterned on-responses, depending on the characteristics of the stimuli. These differences result from the organization of the afferent inputs to CA1 and

INTRODUCTION: Direct visualisation of subcortical structures has become increasingly important in functional neurosurgery, improving targeting accuracy and enabling reliable postoperative verification. Proton density weighted (PDW) MRI is widely accessible, rapid, and provides exceptional grey-white matter contrast, yet its full utility for functional neurosurgical targeting has not been comprehensively reviewed. This study summarises the available evidence and illustrates the use of PDW imaging to identify key anatomical targets relevant to deep brain stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, and

Fixel-based analysis (FBA) is an advanced diffusion MRI analysis technique that facilitates the evaluation of white matter microstructure within 'fixels' (specific fibre populations within a voxel). In recent years, FBA has gained prominence for its ability to better characterise fibre tract-specific changes than the more conventional diffusion MRI approaches and has shown promise in elucidating the pathophysiology of psychiatric and neurological diseases. However, FBA has been predominantly limited to single-centre studies, minimising the generalisability of the technique. In this study, the

Focal non-convulsive status epilepticus (fNCSE) is a neurological condition characterized by a prolonged seizure that may lead to the development of epilepsy. Emerging experimental evidence implicates neuronal death, microglial activation and alterations in the excitatory and inhibitory synaptic balance as key features in the pathophysiology following fNCSE. We have previously reported alterations in the excitatory adhesion molecule N-cadherin in rats with fNCSE originating from the hippocampus that subsequently also develop spontaneous seizures. In this study, fNCSE rats were treated intraper

Brain insulin resistance is a major factor leading to impaired cognitive function and it is considered as the onset of Alzheimer´s disease. Insulin resistance is intimately linked to inflammatory conditions, many studies have revealed how pro-inflammatory cytokines lead to insulin resistance, by inhibiting IRS1 function. Thus, the dysfunction of insulin signaling is concomitant with inflammatory biomarkers. However, the specific effect of IRS1 impaired function in otherwise healthy brain has not been dissected out. So, we decided in our study, to study the specific role of IRS1 in the hippocam

BACKGROUND: The presence of childhood adversity predicts poorer outcome to antidepressant medications and/or psychotherapy. However its impact on neuromodulation outcomes is unclear. We investigated whether adversity affects outcomes in patients receiving Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) of the subcallosal cingulate area (SCC) for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD).
METHODS: Longitudinal follow-up data on 56 TRD patients receiving SCC-DBS. The ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) questionnaire was used to quantify adversity and estimate its prevalence in these patients. The primary outcome was r
