Genomic amplification of the human telomerase RNA gene for differential diagnosis of cervical disorders.

To evaluate genomic amplification of the human telomerase RNA gene (TERC) as a supportive approach to cytopathology or histopathology in diagnosis of low-grade and high-grade uterine cervical lesions, 1,033 Chinese women at three medical centers had liquid-based thin-layer cytopathologic examination and TERC detection by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Human papillomavirus DNA testing, colposcopy with or without biopsy, and histopathologic examination were conducted as needed. In cytopathologic examination, genomic amplification of TERC was found in 30 of 659 (4.6%) normal or benign

Does early resection of presumed low-grade glioma improve survival? A clinical perspective.

Early resection is standard of care for presumed low-grade gliomas. This is based on studies including only tumors that were post-surgically confirmed as low-grade glioma. Unfortunately this does not represent the clinicians' situation wherein he/she has to deal with a lesion on MRI that is suspect for low-grade glioma (i.e. without prior knowledge on the histological diagnosis). We therefore aimed to determine the optimal initial strategy for patients with a lesion suspect for low-grade glioma, but not histologically proven yet. We retrospectively identified 150 patients with a resectable pre

[Postoperative long-term results in high-grade traumatic ruptures of the spleen in children].

BACKGROUND: Splenic rupture is the most common injury in blunt abdominal trauma at any age. The grade of rupture, haemodynamic stability and, in the case of operative treatment, the experience of the surgeon all play an important role in preserving the spleen. Due to its important immunological function preservation of the spleen should be the goal. PATIENTS: From January 2000 to August 2009 five children (4 male/1 female) with isolated grade IV or V splenic rupture, according to the Organ Injury Score (OIS), were treated operatively. At the time of the trauma the patients were 8.8 ± 3.8 (mea

Case Report: Borderline tumor and primary peritoneal carcinoma - a rare synchronism.

Ovarian borderline serous tumors present with peritoneal involvement in 20% of cases, either as non-invasive or invasive implants, the latter also known as extraovarian low-grade serous carcinoma. The coexistence of high-grade serous carcinoma is rare, suggesting a synchronous neoplasia with a distinct and independent tumor biology and behavior. We aim to describe a case of a synchronous ovary-peritoneum neoplasia: serous borderline tumor and primary peritoneal high-grade serous carcinoma. A discussion and literature review concerning the optimal diagnostic and therapeutic approach is provided

Vaginal reconstructive surgery for female incontinence and anterior vaginal-wall prolapse.

The surgical procedure of choice to correct stress urinary incontinence using a vaginal approach depends not only on the anatomic origin of the incontinence (hypermobility or intrinsic sphincter dysfunction) but also on the degree of coexistent anterior vaginal wall prolapse. The grade of coexistent cystocele and the finding of a central or lateral defect are important observations that help the surgeon plan the optimum surgical approach. Grade 4 cystocele with central and lateral defects represents the most severe form of anterior vaginal wall prolapse. In this case, the surgical goals are to

Modified costotransverse approach combined with autologous iliac bone graft fusion and internal fixation in thoracic tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Due to the complexity of the thoracic spine's surrounding structures, thoracic tuberculosis surgery is challenging to perform, with difficult exposure, complex operations, numerous complications, and often unsatisfactory prognoses. Currently, it is believed that the posterior approach alone is superior to both the anterior and the combined anterior-posterior surgical methods in correcting spinal kyphosis and maintaining spinal stability. The posterior approach encompasses the transpedicular approach, costotransverse approach, and lateral thoracic approach. The aim of this study is

Modified monitoring of abiraterone acetate-induced hepatotoxicity in prostate cancer patients.

IntroductionAbiraterone is a standard treatment for prostate cancer and is a preferred treatment option at the Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System (VANTXHCS) due to its formulation, cost, and overall tolerability. In the combined data of five randomized controlled trials, grade 3 and 4 liver enzyme increases were reported in 6% of patients, most commonly within the first three months of initiating abiraterone. Therefore, the prescribing information recommends measuring serum transaminases and bilirubin levels (liver function tests, LFTs) every two weeks for the first three months o

One-stage removal of residual intracanalicular acoustic neuroma and hemihypoglossal-intratemporal facial nerve anastomosis: technical note.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Incomplete removal of residual intracanalicular tumor and injury to the facial nerve are the main problems associated with surgery of large acoustic neuromas via the retromastoid suboccipital approach. In patients with residual or recurrent intracanalicular neuromas, the translabyrinthine approach is the preferred surgical route, allowing complete tumor removal; it may eventually also be used for exposure of the intratemporal portion of the facial nerve for a hemihypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis when a postoperative facial palsy exists This one-stage procedure has

Terminal sterilization of food-grade coatings for cellular agriculture: robustness against water quality and regulatory feasibility.

High production costs remain a major obstacle to the commercialization of cell-based foods, primarily due to the reliance on costly pharmaceutical-grade reagents and infrastructure. This study introduces a practical solution using a dual technical/regulatory approach. We developed iCoater, a food-grade coating agent manufactured via terminal heat sterilization, a standard in food processing. This process results in no detectable bacterial growth and 12-month stability without filtration. In performance tests using primary duck liver-derived cells, iCoater showed efficacy in cell attachment and
