BACKGROUND: Global prescription drug use has been increasing continuously for decades. The gut microbiome, a key contributor to health status, can be altered by prescription drug use, as antibiotics have been repeatedly described to have both short-term and long-standing effects on the intestinal microbiome.
AIM: To summarise current findings on non-antibiotic prescription-induced gut microbiome changes, focusing on the most frequently prescribed therapeutic drug categories.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review by first searching in online databases for indexed articles and abstracts in

Recently we discovered a bacterial strain (MS-02-063) that produces large amounts of red pigment (PG-L-1). Among the cell lines tested, U937 cells showed the highest susceptibility to PG-L-1 toxicity. PG-L-1 induced typical apoptotic nuclear morphological changes, and single cell gel electrophoresis revealed that PG-L-1 caused DNA fragmentation in U937 cells. In PG-L-1 treated U937 cells, the acidic compartment such as lysosomes disappeared, suggesting that PG-L-1-induced disorder of intracellular pH compartmentalization might trigger apoptotic signal. Since p38 MAP kinase inhibitor specifical

Accurate characterization of the movement of water through catchments, particularly during precipitation event response, is critical for hydrological efforts such as contaminant transport modeling or prediction of extreme flows. Abiotic hydrogeochemical tracers are commonly used to track sources and ages of surface waters but provide limited details about transit pathways or the spatial dynamics of water storage and release. Alternatively, biotic material in streams is derived from thousands of taxa originating from a variety of environments within watersheds, including groundwater, sediment,

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a complex inflammatory disorder of the human intestine that most often occurs in premature newborns. Animal models of NEC typically use mice or rats; however, pigs have emerged as a viable alternative given their similar size, intestinal development, and physiology compared to humans. While most piglet NEC models initially administer total parenteral nutrition prior to enteral feeds, here we describe an enteral-feed only piglet model of NEC that recapitulates the microbiome abnormalities present in neonates that develop NEC and introduce a novel

Skin symbiotic bacteria on amphibians can play a role in protecting their host against pathogens. Chytridiomycosis, the disease caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, Bd, has caused dramatic population declines and extinctions of amphibians worldwide. Anti-Bd bacteria from amphibian skin have been cultured, and skin bacterial communities have been described through 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Here, we present a shotgun metagenomic analysis of skin bacterial communities from a Neotropical frog, Craugastor fitzingeri. We sequenced the metagenome of six frogs from two different sites in

Enteric parasitic infections are among the most prevalent infections in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and have a profound impact on global public health. While the microbiome is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of gut health and human development, the impact of naturally acquired parasite infections on microbial community structure in the gut, and the extent to which parasite-induced changes in the microbiome may contribute to gastrointestinal symptoms, is poorly understood. Enteric parasites are routinely identified in companion animals in the United States, presentin

Plasmids facilitate the vertical and horizontal spread of antimicrobial resistance genes between bacteria. The host range and adaptation of plasmids to new hosts determine their impact on the spread of resistance. In this work, we explore the mechanisms driving plasmid adaptation to novel hosts in experimental evolution. Using the small multicopy plasmid pB1000, usually found in Pasteurellaceae, we studied its adaptation to a host from a different bacterial family, Escherichia coli. We observed two different mechanisms of adaptation. One mechanism is single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in t

Biological sulfur cycling in polar, low-temperature ecosystems is an understudied phenomenon in part due to difficulty of access and the dynamic nature of glacial environments. One such environment where sulfur cycling is known to play an important role in microbial metabolisms is located at Borup Fiord Pass (BFP) in the Canadian High Arctic. Here, transient springs emerge from ice near the terminus of a glacier, creating a large area of proglacial aufeis (spring-derived ice) that is often covered in bright yellow/white sulfur, sulfate, and carbonate mineral precipitates accompanied by a stron

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a prevalent incitant of enteritis in human beings and nonhuman animals. It has been proposed that host defense responses incited by Salmonella allow the bacterium to overcome colonization resistance. Piglets (n = 24) were orally inoculated with S. enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 or buffer alone, and the host and microbial responses were temporally examined at the acute (2 days postinoculation [dpi]), subacute (6 dpi), and recovery (10 dpi) stages of salmonellosis. At the acute stage of disease, body temperatures were elevated, and feed consumption

In order to investigate the effects of warming and straw application on soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen and bacterial community structure, a randomized block experiment was performed. Four treatments were included, namely a control (CK), warming (WA), straw application (SA), and warming and straw application (WS) treatments. The soils were sampled during the soybean (Sep. 23, 2017) and winter wheat (April 21, 2018) growing seasons. The soils were used to determine the microbial biomass C and N content using chloroform fumigation methods, and the bacterial community structure was eva

BACKGROUND: Xanthomonas arboricola pv. pruni (Xap) causes bacterial spot of stone fruits and almond, an important disease that may reduce the yield and vigour of the trees, as well as the marketability of affected fruits. Xap lies within the Xanthomonas genus, which has been intensively studied because of its strain specialization and host range complexity. Here, we summarize the recent advances in our understanding of the complexities of Xap, including studies of the molecular features that result after comparative phenotypic and genomic analyses, in order to obtain a clearer overview of the

Inorganic carbon use in cellular metabolism is ubiquitous in all living organisms. The assimilation of inorganic carbon into biomass via heterotrophic inorganic carbon fixation (HICF) is estimated to contribute significantly to global carbon fixation, yet the controls on this process in strictly heterotrophic microorganisms remain poorly understood. To identify potential drivers of HICF, we cultivated well-characterized heterotrophic Gammaproteobacteria (Pseudomonas putida and Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora) at two temperatures (optimal vs colder) and resource treatments (high vs low organic

Sub-Saharan Africa has increased morbidity and mortality related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD among people living with HIV (PLWH) has not been well studied in this region, where HIV/AIDS is endemic. Increasing evidence suggests that respiratory microbial composition plays a role in COPD severity. Therefore, we aimed to investigate microbiome patterns and associations among PLWH with COPD in Sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 200 adults stratified by HIV and COPD in rural Uganda. Induced sputum samples were collected as an easy-to-obtain proxy f

Cronobacter sakazakii is an important pathogen associated with the development of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), infant sepsis, and meningitis. Several randomized prospective clinical trials demonstrated that oral probiotics could decrease the incidence of NEC. Previously, we isolated and characterized a novel probiotic, Bacteroides fragilis strain ZY-312. However, it remains unclear how ZY-312 protects the host from the effects of C. sakazakii infection. To understand the underlying mechanisms triggering the probiotic effects, we tested the hypothesis that there was cross talk between probi

Neisseria gonorrhoeae gonococcus (GC) is a Gram-negative betaproteobacterium and causative agent of the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhea. During growth, GC releases lipooligosaccharide (LOS) and peptidoglycan (PG) fragments, which contribute significantly to the inflammatory damage observed during human infection. In ascending infection of human Fallopian tubes, inflammation leads to increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, and sterility. Of the PG fragments released by GC, most are disaccharide peptide monomers, and of those, 80% have tripeptide stems despite

Chicks are ideal to follow the development of the intestinal microbiota and to understand how a pathogen perturbs this developing population. Taxonomic/metagenomic analyses captured the development of the chick microbiota in unperturbed chicks and in chicks infected with Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium (STm) during development. Taxonomic analysis suggests that colonization by the chicken microbiota takes place in several waves. The cecal microbiota stabilizes at day 12 posthatch with prominent Gammaproteobacteria and Clostridiales. Introduction of S. Typhimurium at day 4 posthatch dis

OBJECTIVE: (Background): Alzheimer's disease (AD), clinically characterized by the progressive neurodegenerative condition and cognitive impairment, is one of the main causes of disability in elder people worldwide. Recently, several animal studies indicated that the 'gut-brain' axis might contribute to the amyloid deposition of AD. However, data about gut dysbiosis in human AD remains scarce in the literature, especially including the whole process of AD. In this prospective and cross-sectional study, we aimed at identifying differences in microbiome between patients with AD (Pre-onset stage

The genus Acinetobacter possesses non-canonical genes and responses to DNA damage. It encodes no LexA homolog to repress the ~150 SOS genes induced after exposure to various DNA-damaging agents, but two SOS regulators, UmuDAb and DdrR, repress both themselves and error-prone polymerases that generate mutations after DNA damage. Further differences include the lack of the Gram-negative cell division inhibitor (CDI), SulA, in members of the Moraxellaceae family to which Acinetobacter belongs. However, ddrR, which lacks homologs outside the Acinetobacter genus, is transcribed divergently from umu

A 63-day feeding trial was conducted with 1,800 one-day-old male Qingyuan Partridge chickens, covering three feeding phases: starter (days 1-22), grower (days 23-42) and finisher (days 43-63). Birds were randomly allocated to four dietary treatments with six replicate pens of 75 chickens each: an antibiotic-containing control (ACC), an antibiotic-free control (AFC), and two groups supplemented with 0.45% and 0.60% potassium diformate (KDF), respectively. The evaluated endpoints included phase-specific growth performance, slaughter traits at day 63, routine hematology, serum biochemistry, arter

UNLABELLED: Biological nitrogen fixation is a key process impacting productivity in the Baltic Sea. Most studies of this process have focused on filamentous cyanobacterial diazotrophs, leaving the ecological roles of non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs (NCDs) poorly resolved. Here, we investigate the diazotrophic community across different primary productivity phases (productive and post-productive) and within distinct particle fractions (suspended and sinking) across the Northern Baltic Proper, Gulf of Finland, and Gulf of Bothnia. Using nifH gene amplicon sequencing, we show that NCDs dominate th
