BACKGROUND/AIMS: Neuroendocrine tumours are fairly rare neoplasms that require different treatments and have various prognoses. The aim of this study was to present the author's observations of the histological tumor types, occurrence and its surgical treatment.
METHODOLOGY: Thirty-five cases of neuroendocrine tumours were studied retrospectively in a 9-year period. All cases were investigated for haematological and biochemical parameters. Ultrasonography, scintigraphy, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging of abdominal cavity, pelvis, thorax or neck--depend on the tumor localizat

BACKGROUND: Surgery for pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) with blood vessel involvement is controversial.
HYPOTHESIS: Resection of PETs with major blood vessel involvement can be beneficial.
DESIGN: The combined databases of the National Institutes of Health and Stanford University hospitals were queried.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Operation, pathologic condition, complications, and disease-free and overall survival.
RESULTS: Of 273 patients with PETs, 46 (17%) had preoperative computed tomography evidence of major vascular involvement. The mean size for the primary PET was 5.0 cm. The involv

BACKGROUND: Liver metastases of endocrine tumors are of major prognostic significance. The various therapeutic approaches have given disappointing results; however, locoregional treatment has allowed transient control of hepatic tumor growth.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients with liver metastases of endocrine tumors (mainly carcinoid tumors [n = 18] and gastrinomas [n = 5]) were included in a Phase II study of hepatic arterial chemoembolization (CE). Metastases were bilateral in all patients and invaded more than 50% of the liver in 12. They were synchronous of the primary tumor in 62.5% of the

Gastrin immunocytochemistry and non-radioactive in situ hybridization, using biotinylated oligonucleotide probes, for gastrin mRNA have been used for studying a retrospective material of six gastrin-producing (Zollinger-Ellison) tumors. Hybridization results for gastrin mRNA were positive in all six, while gastrin immunoreactivity could be detected in five tumors. In one of the patients, different areas of the same tumor displayed differences in immunoreactivity to gastrin, but were uniformly hybridization positive. Weak hybridization signals were detected in liver metastases from a necropsy c

Background/Objectives: Patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) often have a good prognosis with long overall survival. We evaluated quality of life (QoL) after surgery for PanNETs, using the new EORTC-specific questionnaires. Methods: PanNET patients operated on in our unit (1990-2023) received three EORTC questionnaires (QLQ-C30 and the new P.NET15 and P.NET19). We evaluated the following: (1) QLQ-C30 outcomes; (2) mixed domains from QLQ-C30, P.NET15, and P.NET19; and (3) domains from P.NET19 and P.NET15 only. Functional and symptom scales were investigated in relationship wi

Early duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (dNENs) are being increasingly diagnosed. Non-functional dNENs in the bulb expressing gastrin are by far the most frequent entity. In the period from 2004 to 2012, 17 cases of 16 patients with NET in the duodenal bulb were evaluated. dNENs of the ampulla of Vater and functional dNEN/gastrinoma were not included due to possibly different malignant potentials. The average age of the patients was 65.7 years, the mean tumour size was 10.2 mm, the maximum proliferation index Ki 67 was 5 % (NET G2). In most cases the maximum depth of invasion was down to the

The purpose of this review, based upon 40 years of research, is to clear old controversies. The gastric juice is a strong acid with active enzymes (pepsin and lipase); ideal for killing swallowed microorganisms. Totally isolated rat stomach and histamine determination. Human gastric carcinomas were examined for ECL cell differentiation because tumours found in rodents after dosing with inhibitors of acid secretion were reclassified to be of ECL cell origin. The gastrin receptor is localized to the ECL cell only, where gastrin stimulates the function and growth. Drug-induced hypo-acidity induce

Patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome require that management decisions be made to control the gastric acid hypersecretion and treatment directed at the gastrinoma itself. The advent of newer antisecretory drugs and increased knowledge of the natural history of this disease have led to major changes in the management of each of these two areas. Recent studies have demonstrated that treatment with the currently available histamine H2-receptor antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine) with or without an anticholinergic agent will control gastric acid secretion in almost all patients. These studies

BACKGROUND: Clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes in children and adolescents with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 are not well characterized.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 80 patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 who commenced tumor surveillance at ≤18 years of age.
RESULTS: Fifty-six patients (70%) developed an endocrine tumor by age ≤18 years (median age = 14 years, range = 6-18 years). Primary hyperparathyroidism occurred in >80% of patients, with >70% undergoing parathyroidectomy, in which less-than-subtotal (<3-gland) resection resulted

The article presents the results of investigation and treat- ment of 124 patients with neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas (NET P): insulinima (68 cases), gastrinoma (43 cases), rare forms of tumor (13 patients). It was stated that clinical manifestations of NET P resembled the signs of neurological and gastroentero- logical diseases. Thus, the terms of detection would be prolonged during pre-admission stage and this validated the reasonabil- ity of well-timed application of current laboratory methods of diagnostics. An appropriate clinic neuroendocrine syndrome could be confirmed in 93-96%

INTRODUCTION: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) is a rare autosomal dominant inherited endocrine disease characterized by pancreatic, parathyroid, and anterior pituitary tumours. Hypercalcaemia due to parathyroid tumours is usually the first manifestation of MEN 1. Pancreatic islet tumours occur less frequently, among them gastrinomas and insulinomas are the most prevalent. Prolactinomas are a relatively common pituitary presentation of the syndrome. The gene causing MEN 1 is localized in chromosome 11q13 and encodes a protein named menin, which interacts with various proteins involv

In addition to regulating acid secretion, the gastric antral hormone gastrin regulates several important cellular processes in the gastric epithelium including proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, tissue remodelling and angiogenesis. Elevated serum concentrations of this hormone are caused by many conditions, particularly hypochlorhydria (as a result of autoimmune or Helicobacter pylori (H pylori)-induced chronic atrophic gastritis or acid suppressing drugs) and gastrin producing tumors (gastrinomas). There is now accumulating evidence that altered local and plasma concentrations of

Somatostatin is a potent inhibitor of gastrin secretion and gene expression. Menin is a 67-kDa protein product of the multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) gene that when mutated leads to duodenal gastrinomas, a tumor that overproduces the hormone gastrin. These observations suggest that menin might normally inhibit gastrin gene expression in its role as a tumor suppressor. Since somatostatin and ostensibly menin are both inhibitors of gastrin, we hypothesized that somatostatin signaling directly induces menin. Menin protein expression was significantly lower in somatostatin-null mice, wh

Little is known about the molecular pathogenesis of neuroendocrine tumors (NET) of the gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) system. We analyzed genetic and epigenetic alterations as well as the CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP). The study comprised 118 well-differentiated fore- and mid-gut GEP-NET from 71 patients. In addition to loss of heterozygosity (LOH), microsatellite instability (MSI) and the methylation status of various tumor associated genes were examined. The expression profile of p16, APC and MENIN was investigated by immunohistochemistry. None of the tumors was highly microsatellit

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 1 syndrome or Wermer syndrome is a classical malignant neoplasia syndrome, inherited in the autosomal dominant pattern, when hyperplastic and/or neoplastic injury develops synchronously or metachronously in the cells of the parathyroid gland, pancreas islets, hypophysis, and rarer in other neuroendocrine organs. The syndrome develops when germinative MEN 1--neoplasia suppression gene inactivation mutations occurs. More than 95 percent of patients have this MEN 1 gene mutation, when the penetration of mutation is almost 100 percent. An early stage of this

Four types of gastric carcinoids have been identified: (1) multiple small body-fundus carcinoids associated with chronic atrophic gastritis type A (A-CAG); (2) sporadic solitary lesions without specific pathogenetic background (non-A-CAG); (3) carcinoidosis associated with Zollinger-Ellison/MEN 1 syndrome, and (4) rare tumors, e.g. gastrin cell tumors, neuroendocrine carcinomas and mixed endocrine-exocrine tumors. In a retrospective study of 15 patients with gastric carcinoids (11 A-CAG, 3 non-A-CAG and 1 gastrin cell tumor) over a 10-year period, the histopathological and clinical features we

Esophageal perforation in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is an exceedingly rare and life-threatening manifestation of gastrinoma-related acid hypersecretion. While peptic ulceration and severe reflux are recognized complications of ZES, perforation represents the ultimate consequence of uncontrolled hyperacidity. Evidence remains confined to isolated case reports with no prior systematic synthesis. A scoping review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR and the Joanna Briggs Institute framework. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science was performed from data

BACKGROUND: The multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome (MEN1) natural history is poorly evaluated, and few single-institution experiences about hereditary gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NET) are reported. Our purpose is to analyze the role of GEP-NET in MEN1-related death, as well as the behavior of these lesions during follow-up.
METHODS: The study population consists of 77 patients diagnosed with MEN1 GEP-NET, regularly followed up since 1990. Extensive clinical data were prospectively recorded. Statistical analysis was performed both on the whole population of 77 p
