A simple method for the determination of glyphosate, glufosinate and their metabolites in biological specimen by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry: an application for forensic toxicology.

Glyphosate (GLYP) and glufosinate (GLUF) are phosphorus-containing amino acid type herbicides that are used worldwide. With their rising consumptions, fatal intoxication cases due to these herbicides, whether accidental or intentional, cannot be ignored. Both compounds are difficult to detect, and their pretreatment for instrumental analysis are complicated and time-consuming. Our aim was to develop a simple and rapid quantification method for the two herbicides and their metabolites with liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). We also compared 2-amino-4-phosphonobutyric aci

Environmental Pollution, Oxidative Stress and Thioretinaco Ozonide: Effects of Glyphosate, Fluoride and Electromagnetic Fields on Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Carcinogenesis, Atherogenesis and Aging.

Environmental pollutants, such as pesticides, herbicides, additives to food and water, and electromagnetic fields threaten public health by promotion of cancer, heart disease and chronic diseases of aging. Many of these pollutants cause adverse health outcomes by effects on mitochondrial function to produce oxidative stress through loss of the active site complex for oxidative phosphorylation, thioretinaco ozonide oxygen nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, from opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Glyphosate, fluoride, and electromagnetic fields are examples of c

The occurrence of glyphosate, atrazine, and other pesticides in vernal pools and adjacent streams in Washington, DC, Maryland, Iowa, and Wyoming, 2005-2006.

Vernal pools are sensitive environments that provide critical habitat for many species, including amphibians. These small water bodies are not always protected by pesticide label requirements for no-spray buffer zones, and the occurrence of pesticides in them is poorly documented. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of glyphosate, its primary degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid, and additional pesticides in vernal pools and adjacent flowing waters. Most sampling sites were chosen to be in areas where glyphosate was being used either in production agriculture or for nonindi

Exposure to polyoxyethylene tallow amines (POEAs), glyphosate co-formulation surfactants, in a US pregnant population and their potential endocrine disrupting effects.

Emerging but inconsistent evidence suggests that glyphosate (GLY)-based herbicides (GBHs) are more toxic than the active ingredient, GLY alone. Polyoxyethylene tallow amines (POEAs) are surfactants most widely used in GBH formulations, making up to 5-15 % by weight. However, neither POEA exposure nor their toxicity has been well studied in the general population. This study leverages second trimester urine samples collected from 86 pregnant participants of a multi-center, US-based pregnancy cohort. We measured three POEA homologs, i.e., C16s(EO)2, C18u(EO)2, and C18s(EO)2, using an ultrahigh p

Toxicological concerns regarding glyphosate, its formulations, and co-formulants as environmental pollutants: a review of published studies from 2010 to 2025.

Over the last decade and worldwide, an enormous investment in research and data collection has been made in the hope of better understanding the possible ecological and toxicological impacts triggered by glyphosate (GLY). This broad-spectrum, systemic herbicide became the most heavily applied pesticide ever in the 2000s. It is sprayed in many different ways in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings, resulting in multiple routes of exposure to organisms up and down the tree of life. Yet, relatively little is known about the environmental fate of GLY-based herbicide (GBH) formulations,

Co-exposure of iron oxide nanoparticles and glyphosate-based herbicide induces DNA damage and mutagenic effects in the guppy (Poecilia reticulata).

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have been tested to remediate aquatic environments polluted by chemicals, such as pesticides. However, their interactive effects on aquatic organisms remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the genotoxicity and mutagenicity of co-exposure of IONPs (γ-Fe2O3 NPs) and glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH) in the fish Poecilia reticulata. Thus, fish were exposed to citrate-functionalized γ-Fe2O3 NPs (0.3 mg L-1; 5.44 nm) alone or co-exposed to γ-Fe2O3 NPs (0.3 mg L-1) and GBH (65 and 130 μg of glyphosate L-1) during 14 and 21 days. The genotoxicity (DNA damage)

Gestational exposure to glyphosate-based herbicide and glucose homeostasis in rats: effects on dams during pregnancy and post-term periods, and on their progeny.

Exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) may affect metabolism and induce endocrine alterations. This study evaluated whether environmentally relevant low doses of GBH affect glucose homeostasis during pregnancy and the metabolism of offspring later in life. Pregnant Wistar rats received daily oral doses of either 0.5 or 50 mg/kg of GBH or water (control) throughout the gestation period. No significant changes were observed in biometric and metabolic parameters during pregnancy. However, hepatic alterations were detected in GBH-treated rats, including reduced glycogen content and decrease

Hybrid Cartridges Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Cost-Reducing and Sensitive Green Alternative for the Detection of Glyphosate and Its Metabolite AMPA.

Exposure to pesticides is associated with harmful effects on the environment and public health. There is an urgent need to develop alternative detection methods to ensure that water supply sources remain free from pesticides. In this work, an iron terephthalate metal-organic framework from the family MIL-101 was studied as an alternative adsorbent for the fabrication of hybrid solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges for the determination of glyphosate and aminomethyl-phosphonic acid (AMPA) in tap and river water samples by chromatographic analysis. Hybrid cartridges were fabricated based on sy

In silico attempt to reveal the link between cancer development and combined exposure to the maize herbicides: Glyphosate, nicosulfuron, S-metolachlor and terbuthylazine.

Pesticides are crucial for crop protection and have seen a 50 % increase in use in the last decade. Besides preventing significant crop losses their use has raised health concerns due to consumer exposure through residues in food and water. The toxicity data from individual components is often used to assess overall mixture toxicity, but uncertainty persists in understanding the behaviors of individual chemicals within these mixtures. Assessing the risk of pesticide mixture exposure remains challenging, potentially leading to overestimation or underestimation of toxicity. This study aims to es

Perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides induced neurodevelopmental behaviors impairments and increased oxidative stress in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus in offspring.

Glyphosate is the organophosphate pesticide most widely used in the world. Recent studies correlate exposure to glyphosate and the emergence of neurodevelopmental disorders. Therefore, it was objective to propose a rat model of perinatal exposure to glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) to study associated neurodevelopmental disorders. Behavioral aspects and brain pathways were assessed in the prepubertal phase. For this, maternal treatment occurred throughout the entire gestation period (from GD0) until weaning on postnatal day 22 (PND 22). Control group received oral gavage with 5 mL/kg of salin

Enoxacin-embedded EuMOF-based ratio fluorescent sensing platform integrated with paper-based sensor and skin-attachable hydrogel for glyphosate detection in foods.

To address the urgent requirement for food safety and ecological environmental protection, there is a need for a sensitive and user-friendly method for detecting glyphosate (GLY). Herein, we developed a novel enoxacin-embedded Eu(III) metal-organic frameworks (ENX@EuMOF) sensing platform for fluorescent and visual dual-modes GLY detection in food samples. The ENX@EuMOF exhibited dual fluorescent signal responses to GLY at 613 nm (decrease) and 520 nm (increase) wavelengths, attributed to alterations in energy transfer efficiency and the ligand-to-metal charge transfer effects. The ratiometric

Eugenol mitigates glyphosate-induced testicular toxicity via modulation of oxidative stress, ER stress, RAGE/NLRP3 and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways in rats.

Glyphosate (GLY), a widely used herbicide, has been implicated in male reproductive toxicity through mechanisms involving oxidative stress, apoptosis, and disrupted cellular signaling. This study evaluated the protective effects of eugenol (EU), a natural antioxidant, against GLY-induced testicular damage in rats. Thirty-five adult male rats were divided into five groups: Control, EU (100 mg/kg), GLY (150 mg/kg), GLY+EU (50 mg/kg), and GLY+EU (100 mg/kg). Treatments were administered orally for seven days. Testicular tissue was analyzed histologically (H&E staining), and PI3K/AKT signaling was

Rapid determination of glyphosate, glufosinate, bialaphos, and their major metabolites in serum by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry using hydrophilic interaction chromatography.

We developed a simple and rapid method for the simultaneous determination of phosphorus-containing amino acid herbicides (glyphosate, glufosinate, bialaphos) and their major metabolites, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and 3-methylphosphinicopropionic acid (MPPA), in human serum. Serum samples were filtrated through an ultrafiltration membrane to remove proteins. The filtrate was then washed with chloroform, and injected into a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) column.

Modulation of P2X7-driven purinergic signaling and NLRP3 inflammasome activation underlies the hepatoprotective effects of coenzyme Q10 against glyphosate-based herbicide exposure.

The widespread use of glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs), including formulations such as Roundup, has raised toxicological concern due to their capacity to induce oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, and mitochondrial dysfunction leading to hepatocellular injury. The present study investigated whether coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) confers hepatoprotection against GBH exposure through modulation of oxidative stress-driven P2X7/NLRP3 inflammasome signaling and downstream inflammatory and apoptotic pathways. Fifty male ICR mice were randomly assigned to five groups (control, sham, CoQ10, GBH, and GBH
