BACKGROUND: The incidence of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries of the elbow has increased in adolescents over the past decade because of widespread participation in athletics and heightened awareness among physicians.

Nitric-silica baths had beneficial myoadaptive and analgesic effect on patients with reflex dorsopathy syndromes. Balneotherapy combined with the treatment by sinusoidal modulated currents, massage, and remedial gymnastics was efficacious in alleviating musculotonic and orthopedic problems in patients with lumbar osteochondrosis. This effect was more pronounced than with the use of gas-bubble baths due to the improvement of trophic processes in the muscular tissue of the affected back and limb regions.

A 37-year-old woman was diagnosed with an isolated proximal tibiofibular joint dislocation (PTJD) after an accident during gymnastic exercise. The dislocation has a low incidence rate and is often missed in the emergency department as physical and radiology signs are subtle. Treatment consists of closed or open reduction and immobilisation. When it is not recognised it is associated with significant peroneal nerve injury.

The female athlete triad, a syndrome of disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis, is now clearly recognized in selected populations of elite athletes. It is often seen in the sports that have an emphasis on "thinness," including gymnastics, figure skating, and ballet. Components of the triad are linked pathophysiologically, leading to significant morbidity and, on occasion, mortality. The disorder is difficult to treat and requires a multidisciplinary approach with intense psychological counseling as the primary focus of attack.

The social background and sport experience of 193 executives in supports in Ontario have been analyzed. This number represented 84% of a sample of 229 initially surveyed in figure skating, gymnastics, ringette, swimming and field hockey. A simple profile of sport executives appears to show that they are equally likely to be male or female typically they are married, Canadian born, well educated and likely already to be in a supervisory role in their own occupations.

Vigorous gymnastics and repeated manipulations of the cervical spine by a chiropractor were associated with headaches and transient cranial nerve deficits in a 7-year-old boy who had a history of birth trauma. Progressive cerebellar dysfunction was later accompanied by a visual field defect. A computerized axial tomography scan revealed a cerebellar infarction, and arteriograms showed vertebral and basilar occlusions. Passive stretching of the cervical spine during chiropractic maneuvers may lead to vertebral artery thrombosis with subsequent embolization into the basilar artery circulation.

CASE: We report the cases of 15-year-old male fraternal twins with bilateral osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum in the absence of syndromic features. At the time of presentation, they had been actively engaged in competitive rhythmic gymnastics for 3 years. Both patients had chronic symptoms in the right elbow, and both underwent arthroscopic evaluation and management.
CONCLUSION: The cases of these 2 patients provide evidence to support the theory that the etiology of OCD may have a genetic background.
