The Evaluation of Asymmetry in Isokinetic and Electromyographic Activity (sEMG) of the Knee Flexor and Extensor Muscles in Football Players after ACL Rupture Reconstruction and in the Athletes following Mild Lower-Limb Injuries.

This study was aimed at evaluating knee stabilizer (quadriceps and hamstring) muscle strength and the medio-lateral symmetry of hamstring fatigue in football players after ACL reconstruction and with mild lower extremity injuries. The study comprised 65 professional football players who were divided into three groups: Group 1 (n = 24; 22.7 ± 3.6 years; 175 ± 4 cm; 77.3 ± 7.6 kg) after ACL reconstruction, Group 2 (n = 21; 20.5 ± 3.7 years; 177 ± 6 cm; 74.3 ± 9.1 kg) with mild lower-limb injuries (grade 1 muscle strains) and Group 3 (n = 20; 23.1 ± 2.8 years; 178 ± 6 cm; 75.8 ± 8.8 kg) without i

Hamstrings Contraction Regulates the Magnitude and Timing of the Peak ACL Loading During the Drop Vertical Jump in Female Athletes.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury reduction training has focused on lower body strengthening and landing stabilization. In vitro studies have shown that quadriceps forces increase ACL strain, and hamstring forces decrease ACL strain. However, the magnitude of the effect of the quadriceps and hamstrings forces on ACL loading and its timing during in vivo landings remains unclear. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect and timing of knee muscle forces on ACL loading during landing. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 13 young female athletes performed

The gastrocnemius muscle is an antagonist of the anterior cruciate ligament.

Since the proximal tendon of the gastrocnemius muscle wraps around the posterior aspect of the tibia, its contraction could potentially strain the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) by pushing the tibia anteriorly. However, the relationship between contraction of the gastrocnemius muscle and ACL strain has not been studied in vivo. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the ACL strain response due to isolated contractions of the gastrocnemius muscle and to determine how these strains are affected by cocontraction with the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles. Six subjects with normal ACLs pa

Early Superimposed NMES Training is Effective to Improve Strength and Function Following ACL Reconstruction with Hamstring Graft regardless of Tendon Regeneration.

The study aimed at investigating the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation superimposed on functional exercises (NMES+) early after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr) with hamstring graft, on muscle strength, knee function, and morphology of thigh muscles and harvested tendons. Thirty-four participants were randomly allocated to either NMES+ group, who received standard rehabilitation with additional NMES of knee flexor and extensor muscles, superimposed on functional movements, or to a control group, who received no additional training (NAT) to traditional rehabilitati

Hamstrings are stretched more and faster during accelerative running compared to speed-matched constant speed running.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries are associated with significant time away from sport and high reinjury rates. Recent evidence suggests that hamstring injuries often occur during accelerative running, but investigations of hamstring mechanics have primarily examined constant speed running on a treadmill. To help fill this gap in knowledge, this study compares hamstring lengths and lengthening velocities between accelerative running and constant speed overground running. METHODS: We recorded 2 synchronized videos of 10 participants (5 female, 5 male) during 6 accelerative running trials a

MRI-Based Volumetric Analysis of the Quadriceps Muscles Correlation With Knee Extension Strength in Patients Undergoing Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative quadriceps and hamstring muscle weakness may predispose patients to strength deficits and prolonged recovery in the setting of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis has been developed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the thigh musculature. PURPOSE: To (1) describe the magnitude of quadriceps and hamstring muscle weakness relative to the uninjured limb preoperatively in patients with known ACL tears, and (2) determine if preoperative quadriceps and hamstring muscle volume correlate with quadric

Hamstrings Hypertrophy Is Specific to the Training Exercise: Nordic Hamstring versus Lengthened State Eccentric Training.

INTRODUCTION: The hamstring muscles play a crucial role in sprint running but are also highly susceptible to strain injuries, particularly within the biceps femoris long head (BFlh). This study compared the adaptations in muscle size and strength of the knee flexors, as well as BFlh muscle and aponeurosis size, after two eccentrically focused knee flexion training regimes: Nordic hamstring training (NHT) vs lengthened state eccentric training (LSET, isoinertial weight stack resistance in an accentuated hip-flexed position) vs habitual activity (no training controls: CON). METHODS: Forty-two h

Spinal manual therapy and exercises for chronic hamstring injuries in a sprinter: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hamstring injuries tend to be chronic in nature and thus require considerable recovery time in athletes. Although some rehabilitation protocols have been previously advocated, there is no consensus in terms of the treatment protocol for chronic hamstring injuries. METHODS: We present the case of a 15-year-old male sprinter who was successfully treated with a combination of manual therapy targeting the lumbosacral region and hamstring-specific exercises. The patient presented with hamstring pain which persisted for 7 weeks. RESULTS: Manual therapy immediately reduced pain and in

Pre-operative hamstring length and velocity do not explain the reduced effectiveness of repeat hamstring lengthening in children with cerebral palsy and crouch gait.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring lengthening surgery (HSL) is often performed to correct crouch gait in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). However, crouch can recur over time, and repeat HSL may be ineffective. One possible reason is that the hamstrings in repeat HSL patients are neither short nor lengthening slowly and would therefore not benefit from HSL. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to determine whether the hamstrings are short and/or slow preoperatively only in patients with primary, and not repeat, HSL. METHODS: We compared pre- and postoperative dynamic semimembranosus muscle-tendon length

Age- and sex-dependence of muscle quality: Influence of intramuscular non-contractile tissues.

PURPOSE: Muscle quality is explained by the ratio between muscle size and strength. Conventionally, muscle size is evaluated without considering the composition of contractile and non-contractile tissues in muscle, hence the influence of non-contractile tissues on muscle quality is not fully understood, especially within aging muscle. This study investigated the differences in intramuscular non-contractile tissues between different age and sex groups, and investigated their influence on muscle quality. METHODS: Eighty-two older and 64 young females and males participated. Muscle cross-section

The Use of Hamstring Fatigue to Reduce Quadriceps Inhibition After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition, an inability to fully activate the quadriceps muscles, has been persistently observed after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr) surgery. Reductions in quadriceps activation may be partly due to the flexion reflex pathway, hamstrings activation, and reciprocal quadriceps inhibition. Since central fatigue has been shown to modify hamstring excitability and change the hamstring reflex response, hamstring fatigue might alleviate quadriceps muscle inhibition by counteracting the flexion reflex. In this study, nine young adult athletes (age: M = 19.9 years

Magnetic resonance imaging parameters for assessing risk of recurrent hamstring injuries in elite athletes.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has established its usefulness in diagnosing hamstring muscle strain and identifying features correlating with the duration of rehabilitation in athletes; however, data are currently lacking that may predict which imaging parameters may be predictive of a repeat strain. PURPOSE: This study was conducted to identify whether any MR imaging-identifiable parameters are predictive of athletes at risk of sustaining a recurrent hamstring strain in the same playing season. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: Forty-one players of the

Assessing the Validity of Wearable Inertial Sensors in Evaluating Joint Kinetics and Hamstring Musculotendon Mechanics at Various Running Speeds.

PURPOSE: Integrating musculoskeletal (MSK) modeling with inertial measurement units (IMUs) offers a promising approach for analyzing joint and muscle function during locomotion. This study examined the validity of combining IMUs, MSK modeling, and inverse dynamics to estimate lower-limb joint moments and hamstring musculotendon (MT) mechanics during treadmill running at varying speeds. METHODS: Eighteen healthy young adults ran on a treadmill at 70% (5.21 ± 0.62 m·s -1 ), 80% (5.96 ± 0.71 m·s -1 ), 85% (6.33 ± 0.76 m·s -1 ), 90% (6.70 ± 0.80 m·s -1 ), 95% (7.07 ± 0.84 m·s -1 ), and 100% (7.44

Association of mechanical temporal summation of pain with muscle co-contraction during walking in people with knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: People with knee osteoarthritis walk with excessive muscle co-contraction that can accelerate disease progression. Central pain sensitization is common in people with knee osteoarthritis and may be related to walking patterns. The objective of this study was to examine the relation of central pain sensitization with muscle co-contraction during walking in people with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: This study reports secondary analysis from baseline data of two clinical trials (n = 90 participants with knee osteoarthritis). The presence of central pain sensitization was measured by

Muscle activation and length changes during two lunge exercises: implications for rehabilitation.

Eccentric exercises are commonly used as a treatment for various muscle and tendon injuries. During complex motions such as the forward lunge, however, it is not always clear which muscles may be contracting eccentrically and at what time. Because this exercise is used during rehabilitation, the purpose of this investigation was to determine what type of contractions take place during two different types of forward lunge and assess the implications for rehabilitation. Five experienced athletes performed five cycles for each of the walking and jumping forward lunges. Motion analysis was used to

The functional popliteal angle test can detect features of hamstring spasticity.

BACKGROUND: Hamstring spasticity is a common impairment in patients with central neurological lesions, and accurate diagnostics is crucial for effective treatment of associated gait abnormalities, such as crouch gait. Current diagnostics, including 3D clinical gait analysis during normal and fast walking, have limitations that may lead to misdiagnosis, possibly explaining the current poor treatment outcomes. To address these limitations, we introduced the functional popliteal angle test-a knee-extension motion with flexed-hip performed while standing on one leg at both slow and fast speeds. Th
