Symptom subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder and their relation to dissociation.

We examined relations between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms and dissociation in three studies. Studies 1 and 2 established a strong level of convergence between our two OCD symptom measures. Specific types of symptoms showed a clear convergent/discriminant pattern, indicating that they can be meaningfully distinguished from one another. In both studies, dissociation correlated more strongly with checking and obsessive intrusions than with cleaning, ordering, and hoarding. Moreover, these associations remained substantial even after controlling for neuroticism (Study 1) and other

[Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders according to ICD-11 and DSM-5 : With brief consideration of the new obsessive-compulsive disorders olfactory reference disorder and hypochondriasis].

This article summarizes the current state of research with respect to the new obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRD) grouping according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The ICD-11 grouping of OCRD is based on common clinical features, such as repetitive undesired thoughts and repetitive behavior and is supported by the literature and empirical data from the fields of imaging and genetics. The disorders in this grouping in ICD-11 include obsessive-com

The Emergence of New-Onset Obsessive and Compulsive Disorder in an Adolescent During COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge toll on both the physical and mental health of people around the globe. Neuropsychiatric symptoms, as well as long-term sequelae, have been demonstrated in those afflicted with COVID-19. These symptoms range from cognitive, attention deficit, new-onset anxiety, depression, psychosis, seizures, and post-traumatic stress. Prolonged lockdown led to social isolation which negatively affected the mental well-being of many individuals. This particularly caused a relapse of psychiatric symptoms due to stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It sparked an increase

Diogenes Syndrome in Frontotemporal Dementia.

Diogenes syndrome refers to the combination of extreme self-neglect and excessive collecting with clutter and squalor, which is often present in patients with dementia. Diogenes syndrome may be particularly common in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), and the investigation of these patients may help clarify the nature of this syndrome. We describe 5 patients with bvFTD who exhibited a decline in self-care accompanied by hoarding behaviors. These patients, and a review of the literature, suggest a combination of frontal lobe disturbances: loss of insight or self-awareness with

The pharmacologic stability of 35-year old theophylline.

The propensity to preserve and to hoard drugs over the years at home is a well-known phenomenon and offers the possibility for intentional and accidental drug poisoning in man. We report a case of acute theophylline poisoning in an 80-year old women after ingestion of 'Asthmo-Kranit', a 35-year old combined preparation containing theophylline and aminopyrine as the main ingredients. The patient developed the typical clinical picture of a symptomatic theophylline poisoning with flush, tremor, tachycardia, hyperventilation, hypotonia, and hyperglycaemia. The clinical course after treatment with

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders: a critical review of the new diagnostic class.

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders includes a new class of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) that includes obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and a handful of other putatively related conditions. Although this new category promises to raise awareness of underrecognized and understudied problems, its empirical validity and practical utility are questionable. This article reviews the phenomenology of OCD and then presents a critical analysis of the arguments underlying the new OCRD class. This analysis leads to a rejection of the OCRD

The Prader-Willi syndrome Profile: validation of a new measure of behavioral and emotional problems in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare, neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the lack of expression of paternally imprinted genes on chromosome 15q11-13. PWS features a complex behavioral phenotype, including hyperphagia, anxiety, compulsivity, rigidity, repetitive speech, temper outbursts, aggressivity, and skin-picking. Questionnaires exist for measuring hyperphagia, but not for the aggregation of other problems that are distinctive to PWS. A PWS-specific tool is needed for phenotypic research, and to help evaluate treatment efficacy in future clinical trials aimed at attenuating

The general public's perceptions and use of antimicrobials in Trinidad and Tobago.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the general public's perceptions and use of antibiotics in Trinidad and Tobago, a two-island republic in the Caribbean. METHODS: This prospective study surveyed 824 randomly selected households listed in the telephone directory, from November 1998 to January 1999. Through telephone interviews we determined knowledge about antibiotics and beliefs concerning their safety and efficacy. We studied the influence of age, gender, education, and having private health insurance on knowledge, self-medication, storing medication at home for emergency use ("hoarding"), and asking

Beyond individual factors: a critical ethnographic account of urban residential fire risks, experiences, and responses in single-room occupancy (SRO) housing.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a significant public health concern, closely linked to housing conditions and socioeconomic status. Residents in socioeconomically deprived neighbourhoods are at increased risk of exposure to hazards due to older and poorer housing conditions and limited access to fire protection measures. Individual behaviours such as substance use, smoking, and hoarding are often highlighted as primary causes of residential fires, overshadowing the broader socioeconomic and structural factors that also play a significant role in housing safety. This paper explores the correlatio

[Kleptomania: clinical and legal aspects].

Kleptomania is characterized by repetitive and irresistible impulses to steal objects, with growing excitement before, and relief after the incidents. The thefts are not planned, carried out without confidants and regarded as illegal by the offenders who often feel guilty for it. The objects are stolen not for monetary gain or personal use, but are mostly discarded, given away or hoarded. Though there is a debate going on for more than 100 years, the nosological position of kleptomania remains unclear. On the one hand the clinical picture is observed as an isolated disorder in otherwise health

Magical contagion beliefs in psychopathology: A review of cognitive mechanisms and maintaining factors.

Magical contagion beliefs-the idea that harm, essence, or impurity can be transmitted symbolically through resemblance, association, contact, or thought-are observed across several mental health conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma-related disorders, eating disorders, and hoarding disorder. This narrative review synthesizes empirical evidence to clarify the emotional and cognitive mechanisms that activate and sustain these beliefs. We propose a theoretical model describing how characteristics of the perceived contaminant (contact, proximity, association, emotional

The Relationship between Orthorexia Nervosa and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is characterized by an intense avoidance of foods considered unhealthy, obsession with healthy eating behaviors, and pathological fixation on healthy foods. Although there are still debates in the literature about the psychological factors and symptoms of ON, it should be noted that many of the symptoms share common features with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between ON and OCD with its subtypes. In this framework, the cross-sectional study was conducted with an opportunistic sample of 587 participa

An autistic dimension: a proposed subtype of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This article focuses on the possibility that autism spectrum disorder (ASD: Asperger syndrome, autism and atypical autism) in its milder forms may be clinically important among a substantial proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and discusses OCD subtypes based on this proposition. The hypothesis derives from extensive clinical experience of OCD and ASD, and literature searches on MEDLINE. Neuropsychological deficits are more common in OCD than in panic disorder and depression. Moreover, obsessive-compulsive and schizotypal personality disorders are over-represented

Similarities and differences between nonorganic failure to thrive and deprivation dwarfism.

Although the terms, nonorganic failure to thrive and deprivation dwarfism, are sometimes used interchangeably, and while the family pathology is similar in both conditions, the clinical features differ. The majority of children with nonorganic failure to thrive are under 2 years and often 18 months of age. Weight loss is the most marked feature and they are often withdrawn and apathetic. In contrast, the documented ages of children with deprivation dwarfism range from 2 to 15 years although the history may reveal earlier feeding and behavior problems. Short stature is the most striking feature

Spanish version of the Inferential Confusion Questionnaire-Expanded Version: Further support for the role of inferential confusion in obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

The purposes of this research were (1) to analyse the psychometric properties of the Inferential Confusion Questionnaire-Expanded Version (ICQ-EV) in a Spanish population; (2) to explore the role of inferential confusion in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD); and (3) to compare the inferential confusion construct in nonclinical and clinical samples. A sample of 342 nonclinical participants and 66 patients with OCD completed the ICQ-EV Spanish adaptation as well as a set of questionnaires. Results confirmed a good fit of the ICQ-EV Spanish version to the original unifactorial structure and exc

Obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The prevalence of OCD in a dermatologic practice may be much higher than in the general population. OCDs can be debilitating in one's interpersonal, social, and occupational functioning. The obsessions and compulsions typically begin fairly early in life and may consume prolonged lengths of the patient's time to complete daily rituals of washing, checking, touching, arranging, hoarding, or ruminating. Evidence is mounting for support of a neurobiologic basis in the etiology of OCD. In terms of treatment, the psychopharmacologic agents (clomipramine, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, sertraline, paroxet

Using Natural Language Processing to Identify Home Health Care Patients at Risk for Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias.

This study aimed to: (1) validate a natural language processing (NLP) system developed for the home health care setting to identify signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) documented in clinicians' free-text notes; (2) determine whether signs and symptoms detected via NLP help to identify patients at risk of a new ADRD diagnosis within four years after admission. This study applied NLP to a longitudinal dataset including medical record and Medicare claims data for 56,652 home health care patients and Cox proportional hazard models to the subset of 24,874 patients

The relationship between obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders and DSM-5 dysfunctional personality domains in a nonclinical sample of Italian women.

To evaluate the usefulness of the DSM-5 maladaptive personality domains in explaining the similarities and differences among four disorders included in the obsessive-compulsive spectrum, 428 Italian community-dwelling women (mean age = 31.96 years, SD = 12.30 years) were administered the Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorder Scales and the Personality Inventory for DSM-5-Short Form as part of an ongoing online survey on women's health. Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) confirmatory bifactor analysis results showed that the OCSD general factor (i.e., obsessive-compulsive spectrum fac

How accurately can supervised machine learning model predict a targeted psychiatric disorder?

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by a compulsion to collect belongings, and to experience significant distress when parting from them. HD is often misdiagnosed for several reasons. These include patient and family lack of recognition that it is a psychiatric disorder and professionals' lack of relevant expertise with it. This study evaluates the ability of a supervised machine learning (ML) model to match the diagnostic skills of psychiatrists when presented with equivalent information pertinent to symptoms of HD. METHODS: Five hundred online participants were randomly recr

The Revised Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Child Version: Adaptation, psychometric properties, and norms in Turkish culture.

The Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Child Version (OCI-CV), which was developed to assess OCD symptoms in children and adolescents, was recently revised (OCI-CV-R) after hoarding was removed as an OCD symptom dimension in the DSM-5. The study aimed to examine the validity of the OCI-CV-R for assessing OCD symptoms in Turkish culture. A total of 1,062 youths, aged 9 to 18 years, participated in this study to assess the OCI-CV-R's psychometric properties in the Turkish culture. Analysis included factor analyses and assessments of validity and reliability. Results demonstrated that the Turkish ver
