A household randomized-control trial of insecticide-treated screening for malaria control in unimproved houses in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Installing insecticidal netting on open eaves, windows, and holes in walls of unimproved houses is a potential malaria control tool. It prevents mosquito house-entry, induces lethal and sub-lethal effects on malaria vectors, and may reduce malaria transmission. Therefore, a household epidemiological trial was conducted to assess the efficacy of insecticide-treated screening (ITS) on malaria infection and indoor vectors in Tanzania. METHODS: In Chalinze district, Tanzania, 421 households were randomized into two arms. In June-July 2021, one group of households' houses was fitted wi

Repellent, irritant and toxic effects of 20 plant extracts on adults of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae mosquito.

Pyrethroid insecticides induce an excito-repellent effect that reduces contact between humans and mosquitoes. Insecticide use is expected to lower the risk of pathogen transmission, particularly when impregnated on long-lasting treated bednets. When applied at low doses, pyrethroids have a toxic effect, however the development of pyrethroid resistance in several mosquito species may jeopardize these beneficial effects. The need to find additional compounds, either to kill disease-carrying mosquitoes or to prevent mosquito contact with humans, therefore arises. In laboratory conditions, the eff

A decline in the coverage and utilization of long-lasting insecticidal nets in Southern Ethiopia: A repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite ongoing interventions like long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) distribution and indoor residual spraying, malaria is increasing in Ethiopia. LLIN ownership and utilization vary from time to time and place to place; thus, local evidence of LLIN ownership and use is required. Hence, this study aimed to investigate LLIN ownership, access within household, use, and associated factors using repeated indicators measures. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study with repeated measures was conducted in the Sidama region, southern Ethiopia. The first survey was conducted

Utilization of insecticide-treated bed nets and key factors among households in resource-limited settings, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) act as an essential tool in malaria prevention by serving as a physical barrier against the disease. In sub-Saharan Africa, the use of ITNs remains a cornerstone in efforts to reduce malaria transmission. Despite their importance, there is limited evidence on ITN utilization and the factors influencing their use in Ethiopia. The objective of this study was to assess utilization of insecticidal treated bed nets and its key factors among Households in resource-limited settings, Northwest, Ethiopia, in 2024. METHODS: A community-based cross-se

Epidemiological and entomological studies of malaria transmission in Tibati, Adamawa region of Cameroon 6 years following the introduction of long-lasting insecticide nets.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a serious public health problem in Cameroon. Implementation of control interventions requires prior knowledge of the local epidemiological situation. Here we report the results of epidemiological and entomological surveys carried out in Tibati, Adamawa Region, Cameroon, an area where malaria transmission is seasonal, 6 years after the introduction of long-lasting insecticidal bed nets. METHODS: Cross-sectional studies were carried out in July 2015 and 2017 in Tibati. Thick blood smears and dried blood spots were collected from asymptomatic and symptomatic individua

A cluster-randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of using 15% DEET topical repellent with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) compared to a placebo lotion on malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have limited effect on malaria transmitted outside of sleeping hours. Topical repellents have demonstrated reduction in the incidence of malaria transmitted in the early evening. This study assessed whether 15% DEET topical repellent used in combination with LLINs can prevent greater malaria transmission than placebo and LLINs, in rural Tanzania. METHODS: A cluster-randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between July 2009 and August 2010 in a rural Tanzanian village. Sample size calculation determined that 10 clusters of 47 househo

Evaluation of household coverage with long-lasting insecticidal nets in central Côte d'Ivoire.

BACKGROUND: To reduce malaria burden in Côte d'Ivoire, the Ministry of Health aims for 90% of its population to possess one long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) for every two persons by 2025. This study evaluated LLIN coverage two years after a mass distribution in central Côte d'Ivoire. METHODS: A census was conducted in 43 villages. Data were collected on household geo-position, composition, number of sleeping units and LLINs owned. LLIN coverage was assessed using: 1/ownership; proportion of household with at least one LLIN; 2/household access; households with sufficient nets for every two

Healthcare innovation adoption in Africa: the case of long-lasting insecticide nets in Ghana using protection motivation theory.

OBJECTIVE: Studies have shown that healthcare innovation adoption is complex. Using Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), an innovation for malaria prevention, the study aimed to understand factors considered in the adoption of healthcare innovations in Africa. METHODS AND MEASURES: Using qualitative methods, we interviewed 10 household heads in Ghana who had freely received LLINs during a malaria campaign. We analyzed our data using a deductive thematic analysis approach utilizing the protection motivation theory (PMT) as our framework. RESULTS: We found that the constructs of PMT: percei

Barriers of persistent long-lasting insecticidal nets utilization in Northwest Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues a significant public health challenge in Ethiopia, with Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) proving effective in reducing transmission. Despite their effectiveness, consistent LLIN utilization is influenced by various factors. While previous research has quantitatively analyzed LLIN ownership and usage, there is a lack of in-depth examination of the behavioral, sociocultural, socioeconomic, and distribution-related factors affecting their sustained use. This study aimed to explore barriers to persistent LLIN use among communities in northwest Ethiopia. METHODS

Assessment of household insecticide-treated bed net ownership, utilization, and associated factors in Kersa Woreda, Jimma Zone, Southwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 40% of the world's population lives in malaria-prone areas, there are 300-500 million malaria episodes worldwide, and at least one million malaria fatalities occur each year which makes malaria is a major public health concern [1]. In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria claims the lives of about 90% of all people worldwide. Today, there is a growing interest in using ITNs as one of the leading strategies for the prevention and control of malaria. Many studies on ITN use and associated factors have shown that factors influencing ITN use differ from place to place, with very few

Malaria.

Although global morbidity and mortality have decreased substantially, malaria, a parasite infection of red blood cells, still kills roughly 2000 people per day, most of whom are children in Africa. Two factors largely account for these decreases; increased deployment of insecticide-treated bednets and increased availability of highly effective artemisinin combination treatments. In large trials, parenteral artesunate (an artemisinin derivative) reduced severe malaria mortality by 22·5% in Africa and 34·7% in Asia compared with quinine, whereas adjunctive interventions have been uniformly unsuc

Insect vectors of Leishmania: distribution, physiology and their control.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Leishmaniasis is a deadly vector-borne disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Mediterranean regions. The causative agent of leishmaniasis is transmitted from man to man by a tiny insect called sandfly. Approximately, 600 species of sandflies are known but only 10% of these act as disease vectors. Further, only 30 species of these are important from public health point. Fauna of Indian sub-zone is represented by 46 species, of these, 11 belong to Phlebotomine species and 35 to Sergentomyia species. Phlebotomus argentipes is the proven vector o

Deltamethrin-impregnated bednets reduce human landing rates of sandfly vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in Amazon households.

The entomological efficacy of using 25% deltamethrin EC insecticide-treated bednets (ITNs) was evaluated against the sandfly Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz and Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae), the principal vector of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) in Latin America. A crossover field study in Amazon Brazil (Marajó Island, Pará State) demonstrated that, compared with untreated nets, the insecticide increased the barrier effect of nets by 39% (95% confidence interval [CI] 34-44%), reduced human landing rates by 80% (95% CI 62-90%) and increased the 24-h mortality rate from 0% to 98% (95% CI 93-99

Comparing reported and observed use of insecticide-treated nets in Tanganyika, Democratic Republic of the Congo: a post-campaign longitudinal household study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of insecticide-treated net (ITN) use is essential for evaluating malaria control programs. Most routine indicators rely on self-reported ITN use, which may be affected by recall and social desirability biases. This study aimed to compare reported and directly observed ITN use, assess the validity of self-reported indicators, and examine behavioral patterns and net durability following a mass distribution campaign in Tanganyika Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. METHODS: A longitudinal observational study was conducted across four survey rounds between

Identifying gaps in protection from malaria vector biting in rural Cambodia using an entomological assessment and human behaviour observations.

BACKGROUND: Forest-exposed populations remain the last significant, and most difficult to access, high-risk populations for malaria in Cambodia. Despite the availability of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and/or hammock nets (LLIHNs), continued malaria transmission indicates gaps in protection. This study aimed to identify these gaps among forest-exposed individuals in Plasmodium falciparum hotspots in two provinces in Cambodia, using entomological assessments and human behaviour observations (HBOs). METHODS: Anopheles bionomic traits were characterized using Human Landing Catches (HLC

Effectiveness of a tailored forest package of interventions, including topical repellents, in reducing malaria incidence in Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: In Myanmar, progress towards malaria elimination has stagnated in some areas requiring deployment of new tools and approaches to accelerate malaria elimination. While there is evidence that networks of community-based malaria workers and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) can reduce malaria transmission in a variety of settings, evidence for the effectiveness of other interventions, such as topical repellents, is limited. Since malaria transmission in Myanmar occurs outdoors, mainly among forest-goers, this study tested the effectiveness of topical repellents in combination with suppl

Long-lasting insecticidal nets use and the prevalence of Plasmodium falciparum infection among pregnant women attending antenatal care at the Bonassama District Hospital, Littoral Region of Cameroon: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria during pregnancy continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for both infants and mothers, particularly in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries, despite increased efforts to control it. The utilization of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) during pregnancy is a well-established strategy to reduce the prevalence of malaria. Nonetheless, inadequate adherence remains a persistent challenge in certain regions with high malaria endemicity. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of long-lasting insecticidal nets in preventing asymptomatic mal

Understanding heterogeneities in mosquito-bite exposure and infection distributions for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis.

It is well known that individuals in the same community can be exposed to a highly variable number of mosquito bites. This heterogeneity in bite exposure has consequences for the control of vector-borne diseases because a few people may be contributing significantly to transmission. However, very few studies measure sources of heterogeneity in a way which is relevant to decision-making. We investigate the relationship between two classic measures of heterogeneity, spatial and individual, within the context of lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic mosquito-borne disease. Using infection and mosquit

Correlates of Intra-Household ITN Use in Liberia: A Multilevel Analysis of Household Survey Data.

Malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Liberia. At the same time, insecticide-treated net (ITN) ownership and use remain low. Access is a key determinant of ITN use but it is not the only one; prior studies have identified factors that affect the use of ITNs in households with at least one ITN. These factors operate at the individual, household, and community levels. However, studies have generally not assessed the psychosocial or ideational determinants of ITN use. Using 2014 household survey data, this manuscript examines the socio-demographic, ideational, household, and comm
