Bax Contributes to Retinal Ganglion Cell Dendritic Degeneration During Glaucoma.

The BCL-2 (B-cell lymphoma-2) family of proteins contributes to mitochondrial-based apoptosis in models of neurodegeneration, including glaucomatous optic neuropathy (glaucoma), which degrades the retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axonal projection to the visual brain. Glaucoma is commonly associated with increased sensitivity to intraocular pressure (IOP) and involves a proximal program that leads to RGC dendritic pruning and a distal program that underlies axonopathy in the optic projection. While genetic deletion of the Bcl2-associated X protein (Bax-/-) prolongs RGC body survival in models of gl

Lymphoma of the ocular adnexa.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decades, the incidence of ocular adnexal lymphomas has been increasing. Over the last decade advances in the imaging of ocular adnexal lymphomas have enabled precise biopsies of the tumors. Biopsies are necessary for immunophenotyping, correct molecular classification and the immediate start of the appropriate treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, we collected data from 16 patients (19 eyes) treated for lymphoma of the ocular adnexa between 2006 and 2011 with various tumor sites. We evaluated ocular symptoms of the patients in correlation to the

Ocular involvement in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

A six-year-old boy, a known case of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) on remission since 1991 presented with leukocoria and poor vision of the left eye for two days' duration. Examination revealed endophthalmitis in the left eye with raised intraocular pressure. Anterior chamber paracentesis with vitreous biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of ocular involvement. Further investigation revealed that he also had bone marrow and central nervous system relapse. Clinical manifestation and treatment modalities of ocular involvement in leukaemia are discussed.

Elevated intraocular pressure in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: A prospective study.

Most childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) protocols include high-dose steroid therapy. However, the known potential of high-dose steroids to significantly elevate intraocular pressure (IOP) and lead to glaucomatous optic neuropathy has not been intensively investigated in children with ALL. Moreover, as children with ALL do not routinely undergo IOP measurements, the need for IOP monitoring and therapy is unknown. We prospectively measured IOP in 90 children with newly diagnosed ALL attending a tertiary paediatric haematology/oncology centre, at diagnosis and at the middle and end of

INDOLENT, NONPROGRESSIVE, MULTIFOCAL CHOROIDAL LESIONS: A Presumed Benign Choroidal Lymphoid Disease.

PURPOSE: In 2012, four patients with multiple asymptomatic, indolent, unilateral, choroidal lesions were described. We suspected benign-behaving lymphocytes infiltrating the choroid. This article expands the number of patients and duration of follow-up and speculates further on the etiology. Although histopathologic confirmation of these lesions is still unknown, the natural course of these patients is excellent and should be distinguished from aggressive choroidal lymphoma. METHODS: To qualify for the study, the patients had to meet the following criteria: 1) Patients collected had asymptoma
