PCAN: phenotype consensus analysis to support disease-gene association.

BACKGROUND: Bridging genotype and phenotype is a fundamental biomedical challenge that underlies more effective target discovery and patient-tailored therapy. Approaches that can flexibly and intuitively, integrate known gene-phenotype associations in the context of molecular signaling networks are vital to effectively prioritize and biologically interpret genes underlying disease traits of interest. RESULTS: We describe Phenotype Consensus Analysis (PCAN); a method to assess the consensus semantic similarity of phenotypes in a candidate gene's signaling neighborhood. We demonstrate that sign

Development and usability testing of a web-based self-management intervention for oral cancer survivors and their family caregivers.

Oral cancer (OC) survivors experience debilitating side effects that affect their quality of life (QOL) and that of their caregivers. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a dyadic, web-based intervention to improve survivor self-management and survivor/caregiver QOL. A qualitative needs assessment (semi-structured interviews) with 13 OC survivors and 12 caregivers was conducted to discern information and support needs as well as preferences regarding website features and tools. Results using Grounded Theory analysis showed that OC survivors and caregivers: (1) want and need practical advic

[Computer-assisted planning of corrective osteotomies in cases of epiphysiolysis capitis femoris].

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) leads to an unphysiologic function in adolescent hips. Evaluation of the slippage as well planning of corrective osteotomies is a major three-dimensional (3D) problem. Therefore, the current clinical evaluation, which is based on biplanar plain radiographs, cannot be satisfying. More is needed than simply measuring the femoral geometry to evaluate the impact of a slippage onto the physiologic hip function. We have developed a computer-based system for planning and evaluation of reorienting osteotomies in severe cases of SCFE. In our system, CT-based 3D

Initial Experience With Single-Port Robotic Right Colectomies: Results of an Investigator-Initiated Investigational Device Exemption Study Using a Novel Single-Port Robotic Platform.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgical techniques have been widely adopted in colorectal surgery. New technological breakthroughs have led to even less invasive alternatives like single-port surgery, but this has been hindered by technical challenges such as the collision of robotic arms within a limited space. The Intuitive da Vinci Single-Port robotic platform is a novel system that overcomes some of these challenges. IMPACT OF INNOVATION: This study aimed to assess the safety and feasibility of the Intuitive da Vinci Single-Port robotic platform in right segmental colectomies among adult

Functional ventricularisation of the left atrium--severe mitral valve prolapse paradoxically resulting in minimal regurgitation.

Mitral valve prolapse is a common condition often associated with mitral regurgitation. Intuitively, one would expect a positive correlation between the severity of mitral valve prolapse and the associated regurgitation. This assumption is overturned by an unusual case of functional ventricularisation of the left atrium due to severe mitral valve prolapse which paradoxically resulted in minimal regurgitation.

Negative gallbladder stones: Diagnostic advantages of dual-energy CT and analysis of a unique case.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder stones are a common digestive system disease, but their diagnosis can be limited in some cases, especially in identifying "negative" stones, which may be difficult to recognize with traditional CT scans. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the advantages of dual-energy CT in diagnosing negative gallbladder stones through a unique case of gallbladder stones. METHODS AND RESULTS: A case of a 31-year-old female is described, who was diagnosed with gallbladder stones during a physical examination two years ago and occasionally experienced pain in the upper right abdomen

Active Endoscope Preserving Image Orientation for Endonasal Skull Base Surgery.

Endonasal Skull Base Surgery has some advantages over conventional methods; however, some issues such as the need to replace the endoscope due to the fixed view, and possible invasiveness during insertion make the procedure difficult. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an active endoscope mechanism with several benefits. First, its variable direction of view can cover the wide ranges. Second, it provides a forward view, lessening the danger of damaging critical tissues while the endoscope is being inserted. Third, it can change the direction of view within a very small radius of 6.5

Paradigms for restoration of somatosensory feedback via stimulation of the peripheral nervous system.

The somatosensory system contributes substantially to the integration of multiple sensor modalities into perception. Tactile sensations, proprioception and even temperature perception are integrated to perceive embodiment of our limbs. Damage of somatosensory networks can severely affect the execution of daily life activities. Peripheral injuries are optimally corrected via direct interfacing of the peripheral nerves. Recent advances in implantable devices, stimulation paradigms, and biomimetic sensors enabled the restoration of natural sensations after amputation of the limb. The refinement o

mirPub: a database for searching microRNA publications.

SummaryIdentifying, amongst millions of publications available in MEDLINE, those that are relevant to specific microRNAs (miRNAs) of interest based on keyword search faces major obstacles. References to miRNA names in the literature often deviate from standard nomenclature for various reasons, since even the official nomenclature evolves. For instance, a single miRNA name may identify two completely different molecules or two different names may refer to the same molecule. mirPub is a database with a powerful and intuitive interface, which facilitates searching for miRNA literature, addressing

On decay chains and bathtubs: Democratising computational modelling for the radiation sciences.

INTRODUCTION: Computational modelling can deepen understanding of topics such as radiotracer pharmacokinetics, internal dosimetry, and decay-chain processes. However, modelling is often regarded as the exclusive domain of medical physicists and is not routinely included in the training of other medical professionals, including those in the radiation sciences such as radiographers, physicians, radiation therapists and nuclear medicine technologists. Using the intuitive bathtub analogy of system dynamics, we facilitate the inclusion of computational modelling in the training of healthcare profes

Sleep-time physiological recovery is associated with eating habits in distressed working-age Finns with overweight: secondary analysis of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Association of physiological recovery with nutrition has scarcely been studied. We investigated whether physiological recovery during sleep relates to eating habits, i.e., eating behaviour and diet quality. METHODS: Cross-sectional baseline analysis of psychologically distressed adults with overweight (N = 252) participating in a lifestyle intervention study in three Finnish cities. Recovery measures were based on sleep-time heart rate variability (HRV) measured for 3 consecutive nights. Measures derived from HRV were 1) RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive Differences) indic

Anton Boisen Resurrected: Prophetic Vision and the Hermeneutical Treatment of Psychosis.

Anton Boisen (1876-1965) was a pioneering figure in the psychology of religion and pastoral psychology, yet scholars have largely overlooked his most important theoretical contributions. His unique corpus emerged from his own experience of psychosis in 1920 and his subsequent incarceration in the psychiatric system. I argued in an earlier article that Boisen was a prophet, ahead of his time, and that the scholarly consensus is only beginning to catch up to him. In this article, after summarizing four aspects of Boisen's prophetic vision, I concentrate on what is likely his most significant and

Fluency in semantic coherence detection: Insights from response times, confidence, and eye movements.

This research investigated whether different sources of processing fluency equivalently shape intuitive semantic judgments and their underlying attentional mechanisms. Across two eye-tracking experiments (Ns = 39, 45), participants performed a Dyads of Triads task to identify coherent word sets. We manipulated emotional valence as a semantic fluency source (Study 1) and visual contrast as a perceptual fluency source (Study 2). In both studies, objective accuracy was at a high ceiling (>86%) and unaffected by our manipulations. However, subjective experience was sensitive to fluency. Positive e

Deep-Learning to Map a Benchmark Dataset of Non-amputee Ambulation for Controlling an Open Source Bionic Leg.

Powered lower-limb prosthetic devices may be becoming a promising option for amputation patients. Although various methods have been proposed to produce gait trajectories similar to those of non-disabled individuals, implementing these control methods is still challenging. It remains unclear whether these methods provide appropriate, safe, and intuitive locomotion as intended. This paper proposes the direct mapping of the voluntary movement of a residual limb (i.e., thigh) to the desired impedance parameters for amputated limbs (i.e., knee and ankle). The proposed model was learned from the ga

High-resolution esophageal manometry: using technical advances for clinical advantages.

BACKGROUND: High-resolution manometry (HRM) is a new technique to investigate the motor function of the esophagus. It differs from conventional manometry in recording pressures by solid state microtransducers at 12 points around the circumference at every centimeter of esophageal length, and displaying the data in pseudo-three-dimensional format using a topographic plot, where esophageal pressures within a given range are represented by different colors. RATIONALE: The large amount of data and the capacity to analyze and display it intuitively has afforded many new insights into esophageal dy

Granulocytes subsets and their divergent functions in host resistance to Mycobacterium tuberculosis - a 'tipping-point' model of disease exacerbation.

Granulocytes are innate immune effector cells with essential functions in host resistance to bacterial infections. I will discuss emerging evidence that during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, counter-intuitively, eosinophils are host-protective while neutrophils are host detrimental. Additionally, I will propose a 'tipping-point' model in which neutrophils are an integral part of a feedforward loop driving tuberculosis disease exacerbation.

Learning-Based Motion-Intention Prediction for End-Point Control of Upper-Limb-Assistive Robots.

The lack of intuitive and active human-robot interaction makes it difficult to use upper-limb-assistive devices. In this paper, we propose a novel learning-based controller that intuitively uses onset motion to predict the desired end-point position for an assistive robot. A multi-modal sensing system comprising inertial measurement units (IMUs), electromyographic (EMG) sensors, and mechanomyography (MMG) sensors was implemented. This system was used to acquire kinematic and physiological signals during reaching and placing tasks performed by five healthy subjects. The onset motion data of eac

Artificial Neural Network to Detect Human Hand Gestures for a Robotic Arm Control.

Assistive technology is critical to improving daily life of those with muscular issues such as Cerebral Palsy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy by augmenting their activities of daily living (ADL). Robotic manipulators are one solution for helping with ADL; however, intuitive, accurate interfaces for higher degrees of freedom (DOF) robotic arms are still lacking. An intuitive control system based on artificial neural network (ANN) classification of real-time surface electromyography (sEMG) signals from the user's forearm to detect nine hand gestures and control the movement of the 6 DOF robotic

EMG Pattern Recognition for Persons with Cervical Spinal Cord Injury.

Pattern recognition based myoelectric control has been widely explored in the field of prosthetics, but little work has extended to other patient groups. Individuals with neurological injuries such as spinal cord injury may also benefit from more intuitive control that may facilitate more interactive treatments or improved control of functional electrical stimulation (FES) systems or assistive technologies. This work presents a pilot study with 10 individuals with cervical spinal cord injury between A and C on the American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale. Subjects attempted to elici

Lateralization of the expression of facial emotion in humans.

Though superficially symmetrical, the human face expresses emotion asymmetrically. Darwin (1872) first noted this phenomenon, conceding to being at a loss to explain why expressions such as smiling and sneering defiance were predominantly one-sided. Emotion lateralization offers a plausible account. Because the lower two-thirds of the face is contralaterally controlled, the emotion-dominant right hemisphere innervates the lower left hemiface, resulting in more intense expressions. Thus whether smiling or sneering, humans show stronger emotion on the left side of the face. This chapter reviews
