Calculating sample entropy from isometric torque signals: methodological considerations and recommendations.

We investigated the effect of different sampling frequencies, input parameters and observation times for sample entropy (SaEn) calculated on torque data recorded from a submaximal isometric contraction. Forty-six participants performed sustained isometric knee flexion at 20% of their maximal contraction level and torque data was sampled at 1,000 Hz for 180 s. Power spectral analysis was used to determine the appropriate sampling frequency. The time series were downsampled to 750, 500, 250, 100, 50, and 25 Hz to investigate the effect of different sampling frequency. Relative parameter consiste

Evaluation of muscle energy in isometric maintenance as an index of muscle fatigue in roller speed skating.

Roller speed skating is a discipline in which muscle fatigue plays an important role in athletes; in this work, we wanted to evaluate whether a methodological approach based on the energy required to maintain an isometric muscle contraction for one minute, indexed on the MVIC (maximum voluntary isometric contraction), i.e. % RMS/MVIC can give results similar to the frequency decay analysis/time in terms of usability for athlete training and injury prevention. Right and left gluteus maximus and vastus lateralis muscles (involved in the propulsive phase of skating ) were examined separately by s

The Immediate Effects of Muscle Energy Technique in Chronic Low Back Pain Patients with Functional Leg Length Discrepancy: A Randomized and Placebo-Controlled Trial.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of muscle energy technique (MET) on pelvic alignment, leg length, pain, and fatigue in chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients with leg length discrepancy (LLD). Forty-two CLBP patients with LLD volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to the MET group (n = 21) and placebo group (n = 21). The intervention group performed three METs with 5 s of isometric contraction and 30 s of rest once, and the placebo group performed three times the placebo-MET, maintaining the same posture as the MET group without muscle isometric contraction. [Immediate effects of therapeutic interventions on the central motor system and their practical consequences].

Physiotherapy and occupational therapy have changed over recent years influenced by our growing neurophysiological knowledge especially about motor learning. Understanding the direct effects of therapeutic interventions on the central motor system is crucial for further development of therapeutic approaches. Recent studies are discussed dealing with the facilitatory effects of different therapeutic interventions and the question whether or not the activation of the healthy upper limb has a facilitatory or inhibitory net-effect on the damaged central motor system. A comparison of polyglycolic acid versus type 1 collagen bioabsorbable nerve conduits in a rat model: an alternative to autografting.

PURPOSE: Severe nerve injury with segmental loss requires nerve graft or conduit repair. We compared 2 synthetic, bioabsorbable nerve conduits with the gold standard of autogenous nerve grafting using histopathologic and neurophysiologic analyses. METHODS: A 10-mm segment of the sciatic nerve of 45 Sprague-Dawley rats was resected, leaving a gap defect. Three experimental groups were used: 15 coaptations using type I collagen nerve conduits, 15 coaptations using polyglycolic acid (PGA) nerve conduits, and 15 coaptations using the excised segments as autogenous nerve grafts. The contralateral

Does atropine block antigen-induced contraction in canine bronchial rings? A preliminary report.

Isometric contractions recorded with a strain gauge, were elicited with cumulative doses of ascaris suum antigen on fresh canine bronchial rings from 8 dogs. Fifteen rings from 2 spontaneously sensitized dogs reacted with contractions to the antigen, while 11 rings from other dogs did not react. Seven sensitized rings were re-challenged after atropine, which significantly prevented the antigen from contracting these rings at a time when antigen contracted 3 non-atropinized, simultaneously tested rings from the same bronchi. Acetylcholine may play a part in the smooth-muscle contraction induced

Ultra-wideband radar to measure in vivo muscle forces.

Accurate measures of muscle forces are critical for engineers, clinicians, and biomechanists, yet direct measurement is highly invasive, and current estimation methods remain limited in accuracy. Here, we demonstrate the application of ultra-wideband radar sensors to noninvasively estimate muscle forces by measuring changes in the electromagnetic properties of contracting muscles, in muscles with different structural properties, during various static and dynamic conditions, and in the presence of fatigue. First, we show that ultra-wideband radar scans of muscle can reliably track isometric for

The effects of chronic concentric and eccentric training on position sense and joint reaction angle of the knee extensors.

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of chronic concentric or eccentric training on position sense and joint reaction angle, in healthy, untrained young men. Twenty-four men were randomly assigned into a pure concentric (CT) or a pure eccentric (ET) group and performed for 8 weeks, one training session/week, 75 maximal knee extensors contractions. Before and 48 h after the first (W1) and the last (W8) training sessions, knee joint position sense and joint reaction angle were assessed at three different knee angles (i.e. 30°, 45° and 60°). At the same time points, indirect ind

Effectiveness of 448-kHz Capacitive Resistive Monopolar Radiofrequency Therapy After Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage to Restore Muscle Strength and Contractile Parameters.

CONTEXT: Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) is prevalent especially in sports and rehabilitation. It causes loss in skeletal muscle function and soreness. As there are no firm preventive strategies, we aimed to evaluate the preventive efficacy of nonthermal 448-kHz capacitive resistive monopolar radiofrequency (CRMRF) therapy after eccentric bouts of EIMD response in knee flexors. DESIGN: Twenty-nine healthy males (age: 25.2 [4.6] y) were randomized in control group (CG; n = 15) and experimental group (EG; n = 14) where EG followed 5 daily 448-kHz CRMRF therapies. Unlike voluntary contractions, stimulated contractions of a hand muscle do not reduce voluntary activation or motoneuronal excitability.

Voluntary force declines during sustained, maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) due to changes in muscle and central nervous system properties. Central fatigue, an exercise-induced reduction in voluntary activation, is influenced by multiple processes. Some may occur independently of descending voluntary drive. To differentiate the effects associated with voluntary drive from other central and peripheral influences, we measured voluntary activation and motoneuron excitability following fatiguing contractions produced voluntarily or by electrical stimulation. On two separate days, participants

Isometric developed tension and histopathology of myocardium of chagasic mice. I.

Cardiac disease is usually the most serious complication of human infection with Trypanosoma cruzi in our country. This report studies the evolution of the chagasic cardiopathy in mice inoculated with low number of parasites during acute and indeterminate stages in different aspects: contractility, histopathology and pharmacological response. From 2-45 days post infection (p.i.) (acute stage) myocardium contractile force reached higher values than in controls, but norepinephrine (NE) response was significantly lower. Acetylcholine (ACh) caused a negative inotropic effect similar to the observe

Increased spinal reflex excitability is associated with enhanced central activation during voluntary lengthening contractions in human spinal cord injury.

This study of chronic incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects investigated patterns of central motor drive (i.e., central activation) of the plantar flexors using interpolated twitches, and modulation of soleus H-reflexes during lengthening, isometric, and shortening muscle actions. In a recent study of the knee extensors, SCI subjects demonstrated greater central activation ratio (CAR) values during lengthening (i.e., eccentric) maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs), compared with during isometric or shortening (i.e., concentric) MVCs. In contrast, healthy controls demonstrated lower len

Local and Generalized Endogenous Pain Modulation in Healthy Men: Effects of Exercise and Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage.

UNLABELLED: Isometric exercise has been shown to activate endogenous pain inhibitory pathways in healthy adults, but not in some clinical pain populations. OBJECTIVE: Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and the associated delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) are a model for studying clinical pain; thus, our purpose was to examine the effects of isometric exercise on pressure pain threshold (PPT) in the presence and absence of DOMS. METHODS: Data were collected on 23 males (22.8 ± 2.5 yrs). PPT was assessed in the right (exercising) and left (resting) quadriceps prior to, every 30 seconds d

Increased EMG-EMG coherence in the theta and alpha bands during bimanual force modulation.

During the execution of movements, error correction processes have been inferred by EEG activation at oscillation frequencies in the theta (4-8 Hz) and alpha (8-12 Hz) bands. The current study examined whether evidence for error detection and correction could be found at the muscular level through the use of EMG-EMG coherence, which quantifies the amount of synchronous EMG activity between limbs in the frequency domain. Participants (n = 13) performed a bimanual force production task involving either wrist flexors or extensors under conditions in which the force was to be held constant or cont

Is there muscular weakness in Parkinson's disease?

Controversy exists as to whether muscle weakness is present in Parkinson's disease (PD). Computerized literature searches identified clinical trials and reviews about muscular strength assessment in patients with Parkinson's disease, using the following databases: PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid EMBASE, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Physiotherapy Evidence Database. Seventeen articles fulfilled all criteria for selection. These studies suggested that isokinetic muscle strength was decreased in patients with Parkinson's dise

Thigh musculature stiffness during active muscle contraction after anterior cruciate ligament injury.

BACKGROUND: Altered motor unit (MU) activity has been identified after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, but its effect on muscle tissue properties is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare thigh musculature muscle stiffness between control and ACL-injured subjects. METHODS: Thirty ACL-injured subjects and 25 control subjects were recruited. Subjects completed a randomized protocol of isometric contractions while electromyography (EMG) signals were recorded. Three maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) determined peak force for 10 and 25% MVIC trials. Shear wave ela

Marfan syndrome decreases Ca2+ wave frequency and vasoconstriction in murine mesenteric resistance arteries without changing underlying mechanisms.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Vascular smooth muscle in Marfan syndrome, a connective tissue disorder caused by mutations in FBN1 encoding fibrillin-1, is associated with decreased tonic contraction. As Ca(2+) waves are tightly associated with vasoconstriction, we hypothesized decreased tonic contraction in Marfan syndrome is due to aberrant Ca(2+) wave signaling. METHODS: Isometric force and intracellular Ca(2+) were measured from second-order mesenteric arteries from mice heterozygous for the Fbn1 allele encoding a cysteine substitution (Fbn1(C1039G/+)). RESULTS: Phenylephrine concentration-dependently

Neurophysiology of fastest voluntary muscle contraction in hereditary neuropathy.

In patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy types I (demyelinative) and II (neuronal) and in normal subjects, isometric force and electromyographic activity of the first dorsal interosseous muscle were recorded during fastest voluntary contractions and during twitches evoked by nerve stimulation. The maximum voluntary force of the first dorsal interosseous muscle was also measured. In patients, fastest voluntary contraction time (i.e., time from onset of contraction to peak force) was prolonged and inversely proportional to maximum voluntary force. Maximum rate of rise of tension

Surface Electromyography Monitoring of Muscle Changes in Male Basketball Players During Isotonic Training.

Physiological indicators are increasingly employed in sports training. However, studies on surface electromyography (sEMG) primarily focus on the analysis of isometric contraction. Research on sEMG related to isotonic contraction, which is more relevant to athletic performance, remains relatively limited. This paper examines the changes in the isotonic contraction performance of the male upper arm muscles resulting from long-term basketball training using the sEMG metrics. We recruited basketball physical education (B-PE) and non-PE majors to conduct a controlled isotonic contraction experimen
