Prenatal exposure to organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) may pose potential health risks to offspring. While prior studies have demonstrated that OPFRs can be transferred from mothers to fetuses, the mechanism underlying transplacental transfer remains unclear. The pregnant ICR mouse and JAR cell (a monolayer model), in combination with molecular docking, were used to explore the underlying mechanism. OPFRs were rapidly metabolized into diester metabolites following oral gavage in the ICR mouse, with considerable concentrations detected in maternal serum, amniotic fluid, and placenta, as

The diagnosis of "definite" Méniére's disease (MD) relies upon its clinical manifestations. MD has been related with Endolymphatic Hydrops (EH), an enlargement of the endolymphatic spaces (ES) (cochlear duct, posterior labyrinth, or both). Recent advances in Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging justify its increasing role in the diagnostic workup: EH can be consistently recognized in living human subjects by means of 3-dimensional Fluid-Attenuated Inversion-Recovery sequences (3D-FLAIR) acquired 4 h post-injection of intra-venous (i.v.) Gadolinium-based contrast medium, or 24 h after an intratympan

The aim of this study was to confirm the feasibility of high signal on three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (3D FLAIR MRI) as one of the prognostic factors in recovery of sudden idiopathic hearing loss. A retrospective study was conducted using patients who were diagnosed with unilateral sudden idiopathic hearing loss from January 2008 to December 2010. A total of 120 patients were enrolled in for this study. High-intensity signal in the inner ear on precontrast 3D FLAIR MRI was observed in 31 patients (25.8%; FHS) and labyrinthine enhancement was no

This study examined the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant clones that belong to serotypes not included in the pneumococcal conjugate vaccines and that cause a significant percentage of acute otitis media (AOM) in children in southern Israel. During 1998-2001, 2467 pneumococcal isolates, obtained from middle-ear fluid of children <3 years old with AOM, were characterized by antimicrobial susceptibility testing, serotype testing, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Non-vaccine type (NVT) strains constituted 477 (19%) of the 2467 isolates, of which 173 (36%) belonged to only 4 serotypes: 35B,

Hearing loss is a significant disability that inflects dysfunction and affects the patient quality of life. Consequently, hearing preservation and the potential of hearing restoration are prized quests in the management of vestibular schwannoma.1 Although small intracanalicular vestibular schwannomas are commonly observed, progressive hearing loss occurs despite the absence of tumor growth; hence, surgical resection can be performed with the sole aim of hearing preservation in well-informed and eager patients. Hearing preservation by surgical resection has proven to be durable.1-4 In this grou

Despite steady improvements in cross-sectional imaging of the ear, current technologies still have limitations in terms of resolution, diagnosis, functional assessment and safety. In this chapter, state-of-the-art imaging techniques in current clinical practice are presented including cone-beam computerized tomography, non-echo planar imaging magnetic resonance imaging, imaging for labyrinthine hydrops and imaging of the central auditory pathways. Potential future imaging modalities are also presented, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) of the ear

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: In pediatric patients with congenital malformations of the inner ear, anomalies within the anatomy may facilitate unintentional insertion of the cochlear implant electrode into the internal auditory canal. Revision procedures for removal and replacement of cochlear implant electrodes following internal auditory canal insertion are fraught with potential danger, including the theoretical risk of injury to vasculature within the internal auditory canal, repeat insertion within the internal auditory canal, and cerebrospinal fluid leak. The objective of this presentation is

The most common cause of peripheral facial nerve paralysis in dogs, in the absence of otitis media, is thought to be idiopathic. Gadolinium-enhanced (Gd) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been used to study peripheral facial weakness in humans with a wide variety of disorders, including Bell's palsy, the clinical equivalent of idiopathic facial nerve paralysis in dogs. Gd-MR imaging may be useful to demonstrate abnormal enhancement of the intratemporal facial nerve. The aim of this study was to define the role of the Gd-MR imaging in dogs with idiopathic facial nerve paralysis, with regard t

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) cross the placenta and cause fetal death in mink. No indications of impaired implantation have been reported. To study the effects of PCB on mink placental morphology, 2 groups each of 10 animals were orally exposed to Clophen A50 at 0.65 mg (low dose) and 1.3 mg (high dose) per day for 54 days, starting before mating, with 10 control animals. Placentae from mid to late gestation were examined by light and electron microscopy. In the controls, 11% of placentae were degenerate compared to 31% (low dose) and 64% (high dose) in PCB-exposed mink. All control animal

Patients with acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss were treated by rheology or dehydration after recording of the summation and compound action potentials by electrocochleography. Patients treated in the acute phase, as well as patients with chronic disease (that is the interval between onset of hearing loss and therapy was more than 1 week) clearly responded better to dehydration than to conventional rheological treatment. This was especially striking in those patients showing an enhanced SP/AP ratio indicating endolymphatic hydrops.

The anatomic consequences of acoustic overstimulation are explored in this presentation, and attention is directed toward issues where improvements in technology and empirical observation are needed before further advances in our understanding can be achieved. Gains have been made in the last decade in appreciating sound-induced cochlear injury, but there is now a need to evaluate not only cochlear pathology but also the functional state of the surviving structures. There is a wealth of information about the susceptibility of inner or outer hair cells to acoustic injury; however, the etiology

The integrity and permeability of the blood labyrinthine barrier (BLB) in the inner ear is important to maintain adequate blood supply, and to control the passage of fluids, molecules and ions. Identifying the cellular and structural components of the BLB, the vascular endothelial cells (VECs), pericytes, and the perivascular basement membrane, is critical to understand the pathophysiology of the inner ear microvasculature and to design efficient delivery of therapeutics across the BLB. A recent study of the normal and pathological ultrastructural changes in the human macula utricle microvascu

Viral infections of the upper respiratory airways can lead to a delayed viral otitis media (VOM) caused by a diffusion of viruses/virus particles through the round window membrane and resulting in sensorineural hearing loss. The treatment of choice is immediate paracentesis, evacuation of all fluids from the middle ear cavity, and haemorrheological infusions. However, in some cases, persistent symptoms may be an indication for a surgical approach using mastoidectomy. In high-resolution computed tomography, an extended small-sized pneumatisation of the mastoid cells with complete shading was fo
