Multiphasic and mixture lactic acid bacteria screening approach for the removal of antinutrients and off-flavors present in a pea, oat and potato blend.

The antinutrients and off-flavors present in plant-based foods are some of the major organoleptic and consumer acceptance drawbacks considered when developing plant-based fermented dairy alternatives (PBFDA). Here, we investigated a combination of genotypical and phenotypical consecutive screening methods to find out the optimal single- and combination of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains based on volatile off-flavors, phenolic acids, saponins, and trypsin inhibitor degradation through the fermentation of a pea, oat, and potato (POP) blend. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum strains were the most

Intramammary inoculation with lactic acid bacteria at dry-off triggers an immunomodulatory response in dairy cows.

The use of antibiotics to prevent bovine mastitis is responsible for the emergence and selection of resistant strains. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) could be introduced into animal feed as an alternative prevention method that would bypass the risk of resistance development. In previous research, we demonstrated that two probiotic LAB strains isolated from bovine milk were capable of stimulating the production of antibodies and the host's immune cellular response in the udder. The present study aimed to elucidate whether the antibodies of animals inoculated with these strains were able to increas

Use of Lactobacillus plantarum (strains 22F and 25F) and Pediococcus acidilactici (strain 72N) as replacements for antibiotic-growth promotants in pigs.

The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) Lactobacillus plantarum (strains 22F and 25F) and Pediococcus acidilactici (strain 72N) have appeared promising as replacements for antibiotics in in vitro studies. Microencapsulation, especially by the spray-drying method, has been used to preserve their numbers and characteristics during storage and digestion. This study compared the efficacy of these strains and their microencapsulated form with antibiotic usage on growth performance, faecal microbial counts, and intestinal morphology in nursing-finishing pigs. A total of 240 healthy neonatal pigs were treate

Lactic acid bacteria fermentation of prebiotic-supplemented apple juice: Viable counts and flavor evolution revealed by HS-SPME-GC-MS coupled with electronic sensory and chemometrics.

Lactic acid fermentation of apple juice faces microbial density deficiency and quality deterioration. This study explored probiotic-prebiotic synergy to enhance microbial density and juice quality, focusing on prebiotic selectivity for lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their impacts on viable counts and flavor profiles in sequentially fermented apple juice. Results indicated that inulin, fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides (GOS), lactulose, and raffinose significantly enhanced LAB growth. In sequential fermentation, GOS achieved the highest viable counts (2.64 × 108 CFU/mL), total aci

Description of Agathobaculum massiliense sp. nov., a new bacterial species prevalent in the human gut and predicted to produce indole and tryptophan based on genomic analysis.

The novel bacterial strain Marseille-P4005T was isolated from the stool sample of a healthy donor. It is a Gram-stain negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming rod. It grew optimally at 37 °C and at pH 7.0 on 5% sheep blood-enriched Columbia agar after preincubation in a blood-culture bottle supplemented with rumen and blood. This strain does not ferment monosaccharides (except D-tagatose), disaccharides, or polymeric carbohydrates. The major cellular fatty acids were hexadecenoic (24.6%), octadecanoic (22.8%), and tetradecanoic (20.1%) acids. Next-generation sequencing revealed a genome size of

Mushroom Sparassis crispa (Hanabiratake) Fermented with Lactic Acid Bacteria Significantly Enhances Innate Immunity of Mice.

Sparassis crispa (SC; Japanese name: Hanabiratake) is a mushroom with high β(1-3)-glucan content. We here studied the effects of SC and lactic acid bacteria-fermented SC (SCL) on innate immunity. In in vivo studies using mice, oral administration of SC or SCL enhanced the accumulation of macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer (NK) cells, and C-C chemokine receptor type 2- or phospho-Syk-expressing cells in the jejunum epithelial villi and spleen, with significantly higher cell numbers in the SCL group than in the SC group. In addition, mRNA levels of genes encoding tissue factor (TF) and tum

Characterization of Bacteria in Nigerian Yogurt as Promising Alternative to Antibiotics in Gastrointestinal Infections.

Gastrointestinal infections are endemic in Nigeria and several factors contribute to their continual survival, including bacterial resistance to commonly used antibiotics. Nigerian yogurts do not include probiotics, and limited information is available about the antimicrobial properties of the fermenters in the yogurt against gastrointestinal pathogens. Therefore, the antimicrobial potentials of bacteria in Nigeria-produced yogurts against intestinal pathogens were investigated in this study. Viable counts of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in 15 brands of yogurt were enumerated and the bacteria id

Effectiveness of Exogenous Fe2+ on Nutrient Removal in Gravel-Based Constructed Wetlands.

A group of microcosm-scale unplanted constructed wetlands (CWs) were established to evaluate the effectiveness of exogenous Fe2+ addition on ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N), and total phosphorus (TP) removal. The addition of Fe2+ concentrations were 5 mg/L (CW-Fe5), 10 mg/L (CW-Fe10), 20 mg/L (CW-Fe20), 30 mg/L (CW-Fe30), and 0 mg/L (CW-CK). The microbial community in CWs was also analyzed to reveal the enhancement mechanism of pollutant removal. The results showed that the addition of Fe2+ could significantly (p < 0.05) reduce the NO3--N concentration in the CWs. When 10

Helminth infections and gut microbiota - a feline perspective.

BACKGROUND: Investigations of the relationships between the gut microbiota and gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes are attracting growing interest by the scientific community, driven by the need to better understand the contribution of parasite-associated changes in the composition of the gut flora to both host malnutrition and immune modulation. These studies have however been carried out mainly in humans and experimental animals, while knowledge of the make-up of the gut commensal flora in presence or absence of infection by parasitic nematodes in domestic animals is limited. In this study,

Use of selected lactic acid bacteria in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori is among the major pathogenic bacteria that cause chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease and is related to the development of gastric cancer. Several chemicals, including antibiotics, have been used to eradicate H. pylori; however, they do not always curb the infection. Ten representative type strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were screened for antagonism toward H. pylori via inhibition of urease activity. Strains inhibiting the binding of H. pylori to human gastric cell line cells and suppressing H. pylori-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) production were also screened.

Fecal Virome Transplantation Confirms Non-Bacterial Components (Virome and Metabolites) Participate in Fecal Microbiota Transplantation-Mediated Growth Performance Enhancement and Intestinal Development in Broilers with Spatial Heterogeneity.

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) promotes growth performance and intestinal development in yellow-feathered broilers, but whether the virome and metabolites contribute to its growth-promoting effect remains unclear. This study removed the microbiota from FMT filtrate using a 0.45 μm filter membrane, retaining the virome and metabolites to perform fecal virome transplantation (FVT), aiming to investigate its regulatory role in broiler growth. Healthy yellow-feathered broilers with high body weights (top 10% of the population) were used as FVT donors. Ninety-six 8-day-old healthy male yell

Effects of semi-purified diet on depressive behaviors in aged mice.

Diet is a key modifiable factor influencing the composition of gut microbiota. There are two types of commercially available diets for experimental animals: non-purified and semi-purified diets. Non-purified diets are composed of complex ingredients from multiple sources, while semi-purified diets are formulated with refined ingredients. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated a link between the gut microbiota and depression, and feed ingredients may influence depressive physiology and behaviors. To test this hypothesis, we examined how chronic non-purified (CRF-1) and semi-purified (AIN-93G) d

Dietary seaweed extract mitigates oxidative stress in Nile tilapia by modulating inflammatory response and gut microbiota.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme water temperature affects the well-being of all aquatic animals, including fish. Higher temperatures can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can induce oxidative stress and negatively impact fish health and well-being. This study investigated the protective effects of seaweed extract on growth, antioxidant status, inflammatory responses, and gut microbiota to gain a better understanding of the acclimatization ability of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus in response to oxidative stress caused by high water temperatures. Oral Administration of Alcohol-Tolerant Lactic Acid Bacteria Alleviates Blood Alcohol Concentration and Ethanol-Induced Liver Damage in Rodents.

Excessive alcohol consumption can have serious negative consequences on health, including addiction, liver damage, and other long-term effects. The causes of hangovers include dehydration, alcohol and alcohol metabolite toxicity, and nutrient deficiency due to absorption disorders. Additionally, alcohol consumption can slow reaction times, making it more difficult to rapidly respond to situations that require quick thinking. Exposure to a large amount of ethanol can also negatively affect a person's righting reflex and balance. In this study, we evaluated the potential of lactic acid bacteria
