To explore a comprehensive status of heavy metals in the Taihu Lake, which is one of the most important waters in China, water and sediment samples were taken throughout the lake during April to May of 2010, and metal elements (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sb, Zn, Mn) were analyzed in the water column, interstitial water and sediment. Relevant standards were used to assess the sediment and water quality. Approximately 700 kg of cereal bait containing 20 ppm of the anticoagulant rodenticide brodifacoum was spilled into a southern New Zealand lake in 2010 from a helicopter being used to transport containers of brodifacoum bait for an aerial baiting operation. In the month after the spill no residual brodifacoum was detected in samples of lake water, sediment, benthic invertebrates, eels, and two birds.

Alum (aluminum sulfate) is increasingly being used in lake management to control internal recycling of phosphorus from bottom sediments. A method is described to evaluate two methods of phosphorus (P) management in lakes using aluminum sulfate (alum)--in-lake and tributary (inflow) treatment--and compare the resulting in-lake P levels. For in-lake treatment, a technique is described to calculate the optimum alum dose based on measurement of "mobile P" in lake sediments. Alum is often added to eutrophic lakes to limit the release of phosphorus from sediments. This study quantified the effect of age and extent of crystallization on the phosphate (PO4-P) sorption capacity of alum floc. Aluminum hydroxide flocs were formed from alum addition at a dose of 25 mg/L of Al3+ to Big Bear Lake waters returned to the laboratory; flocs were then aged for 4, 20, 50, 120, and 180 days in the treated lake waters. A case of massive ascariasis in a three and a half years old girl who eliminated 104 worms after treatment with mebendazole is reported from a riverside sector of Riñihue Lake, Chile. After three years of cercarial transmission control using focal application of niclosamide and weed removal in water contact sites (WCSs) in the project area of the Volta Lake, the numbers of WCSs infested with cercariae and infected snails were reduced by over 90% in areas of both high and low endemicity. Twenty-three patients suffering from pigmented contact dermatitis caused by cosmetics containing Brilliant Lake Red R were observed.
