Global sport mega-events and the politics of mobility: the case of the London 2012 Olympics.

This paper examines the politics of mobility which surrounded the London 2012 Olympics. We provide a critical discussion of the mobility conflicts, problems and criticisms which emerged from our research with local people in the Stratford and wider Newham areas of London, where most Olympic events were located. The paper is divided into four broad parts. First, we identify and discuss the relevant components of the 'mobilities paradigm' in social science which underpin our analysis. Second, we briefly outline our research methods, centring particularly on fieldwork and interviews with differen

Acute schistosomiasis in travelers: 14 years' experience at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, London.

We report 79 cases of acute schistosomiasis. Most of these cases were young, male travelers who acquired their infection in Lake Malawi. Twelve had a normal eosinophil count at presentation and 11 had negative serology, although two had neither eosinophilia nor positive serology when first seen. Acute schistosomiasis should be considered in any febrile traveler with a history of fresh water exposure in an endemic area once malaria has been excluded.

The prevalence of cryptococcal antigenemia in newly diagnosed HIV patients in a Southwest London cohort.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of cryptococcal antigenemia in a UK HIV cohort and compare baseline characteristics of patients with and without cryptococcal antigenemia. METHODS: Stored sera were retrospectively tested for cryptococcal antigen (CRAG) among newly diagnosed HIV-infected persons with CD4 < 100 cells/μL, who presented to Croydon University and St George's Hospitals, London, between January 2004 and October 2010. We assessed risk factors for cryptococcal antigenemia and patient outcomes by extracting demographic and clinical information from medical records. RESULTS: 157

Validation of the London Chest Activity of Daily Living scale in patients with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: The Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ) is a well-validated, commonly-used tool to assess quality of life in patients with heart failure. However, it lacks specific information concerning breathlessness during daily activities. OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of the London Chest Activity of Daily Living (LCADL) scale for use in patients with heart failure. METHODS: Forty-seven patients with heart failure (57% males, mean age 50 years (standard deviation 9), mean left ventricle ejection fraction 29% (SD 6), New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional cl

The unbooked mother: a cohort study of maternal and foetal outcomes in a North London Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the pregnancy outcome of unbooked compared to booked women of similar parity and ethnic background over a period of 18 months at the North Middlesex University Hospital (NMUH), London. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study from September 2006 to March 2008 comparing the socio-demographics, foetal and maternal outcomes of pregnancies of unbooked versus booked women. Women who received no antenatal care or who delivered within 3 days of the initial booking visit were categorized as 'unbooked' while the next delivered women on the labour ward regi

The tragic 1824 journey of the Hawaiian king and queen to London: history of measles in Hawaii.

The susceptibility of isolated island-based populations to acute infections like measles is well documented, most clearly in Fiji and the Faröe Islands. We review the remarkably tragic 1824 journey of King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu of Hawaii to London and the later enormous impact of measles on Hawaii on first arrival in 1848. The young royalty came to seek an audience with King George IV to negotiate an alliance with England. Virtually the entire royal party developed measles within weeks of arrival, 7 to 10 days after visiting the Royal Military Asylum housing hundreds of soldiers' ch

Experience of delivering women with HIV in an inner city London hospital 1994-2004.

The objective of this study was to compare deliveries in women with HIV at Homerton University Hospital with those in the general antenatal hospital population. The study was a retrospective case-note review of deliveries from 1994 to 2004 at an Inner City London Hospital, UK (Homerton University Hospital). In all, 113 deliveries were studied in 98 women with HIV. Compared with the general antenatal population, women with HIV were more likely to be from African backgrounds, describe inadequate housing and be without the support of a partner or family; 79.8% of deliveries in women with HIV were

Lichen and bryophyte distribution on oak in London in relation to air pollution and bark acidity.

Epiphytic lichen and bryophyte distribution and frequency were investigated on the trunks of 145 young oak trees throughout London and surrounding counties, and compared with pollution levels and bark pH. Sixty-four lichen and four bryophyte species were recorded. Three major zones were identified: (i) two central regions with a few lichens, bryophytes absent; (ii) a surrounding region with a more diverse flora including a high cover of nitrophyte lichens; and (iii) an outer region, characterised by species absent from central London, including acidophytes. Nineteen species were correlated wit

Perceptions and experiences of tuberculosis among African patients attending a tuberculosis clinic in London.

SETTING: Little is known of the social and cultural issues influencing the uptake of and attitudes to tuberculosis (TB) care by people of African extraction living in the UK. OBJECTIVE: To describe the perceptions and experiences of African patients with TB in London, focusing on issues relating to diagnosis, treatment adherence and stigma. DESIGN: Qualitative study using in-depth interviews. RESULTS: Misinterpretation of early symptoms led to delays in seeking health care. Although half of the respondents reported denial of the diagnosis, they reported good treatment adherence, noting the

The impact of high risk human papillomavirus testing in an inner London colposcopy clinic.

This is an audit of a new technique to improve the colposcopy service. Samples were tested for high risk HPV DNA using Digene Hybrid Capture II. Sixty-four percent of the sampled women under 30 had detectable high risk HPV DNA, decreasing to 44% in 30--39 year olds and to 27% in women over 40. High risk HPV prevalence increased with severity of cytology, although 22% with normal colposcopy had detectable high risk HPV. Of those women treated for cervical dysplasia, 83% had detectable high risk HPV prior to treatment, compared to only 32% afterwards. The audit has shown that high risk HPV testi

Audit of the detection and notification of meningococcal disease at a North London university district hospital.

The microbiology department at a North London hospital audited notifications of suspected meningococcal disease in response to a reported high rate, which it suspected was due to over-reporting out of hours to public health specialists. All cases notified over a 14-month period were assessed with regards to time of reporting and subsequent microbiological confirmation. Of 36 notifications, 18 were confirmed as bacterial, mostly meningococcal meningitis. Of the four types of sample readily obtainable on admission (blood culture, ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid [EDTA] blood sample, throat swa

Effectiveness of a cognitive behaviour therapy self-help programme for smokers in London, UK.

One of the key goals of health promotion strategies in the UK and other developed countries is to reduce the prevalence of cigarette consumption. While overall smoking rates in the UK have fallen over the last few decades, they have barely fallen for the least advantaged adults (Department of Health, 1998a). There is a need for interventions that are suitable for lower socio-economic status (SES) smokers that have undergone rigorous evaluation. This study describes a randomized controlled trial of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) with smokers from a deprived area of London. At 6 months follow

A study of the spectrum of skin disease occurring in a black population in south-east London.

We recorded the diagnosis made in 461 black patients (187 children and 274 adults) attending a dermatology clinic between January and March 1996. In the childhood population, atopic eczema and tinea capitis were the most frequent dermatoses, comprising 63% of diagnoses recorded. In the adult population, acne and acne keloidalis nuchae were seen most frequently. Other conditions observed commonly were eczema, psoriasis, keloid scarring, pityriasis versicolor and postinflammatory changes. Our study demonstrates a wide spectrum of skin disease and includes disorders more common in black skin, dis

Calculus deposits and bone loss on the teeth of Romano-British and eighteenth-century Londoners.

The relation between dental calculus and periodontal disease is not clear but it is generally recognized that calculus is a significant pathogenetic factor. Skeletal material has previously been used to study some aspects of chronic adult periodontitis but few studies have quantified the extent of calculus in ancient populations and its relation to changes in alveolar bone height. This study records the presence and extent of calculus and its relation to alveolar bone loss in a Romano-British and eighteenth-century London population. There were significant differences in calculus deposition in

The nature of depression among older people in inner London, and the contact with primary care.

Ninety-six people of pensionable age from an inner-London electoral ward who had been identified by short-CARE screening as having 'probable pervasive depression' were interviewed further to ascertain their GMS-AGECAT and self-CARE status, comorbid features, and current primary-care psychiatric management. Estimated incidence rates of 30.8 per 1000 per year for 'probable pervasive depression' and 15.4 per 1000 per year for GMS diagnostic depression were calculated using results from a short-CARE screen in 1988. Among GMS diagnostic depression cases, anxiety was the major psychiatric comorbid f
