Machine learning classification meets migraine: recommendations for study evaluation.

The integration of machine learning (ML) classification techniques into migraine research has offered new insights into the pathophysiology and classification of migraine types and subtypes. However, inconsistencies in study design, lack of methodological transparency, and the absence of external validation limit the impact and reproducibility of such studies. This paper presents a framework of six essential recommendations for evaluating ML-based classification in migraine research: (1) group homogenization by clinical phenotype, attack frequency, comorbidity, therapy, and demographics; (2) d

Identification of Active Molecules against Thrombocytopenia through Machine Learning.

Thrombocytopenia, which is associated with thrombopoietin (TPO) deficiency, presents very limited treatment options and can lead to life-threatening complications. Discovering new therapeutic agents against thrombocytopenia has proven to be a challenging task using traditional screening approaches. Fortunately, machine learning (ML) techniques offer a rapid avenue for exploring chemical space, thereby increasing the likelihood of uncovering new drug candidates. In this study, we focused on computational modeling for drug-induced megakaryocyte differentiation and platelet production using ML me

Machine learning-based predictive model for post-stroke dementia.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke dementia (PSD), a common complication, diminishes rehabilitation efficacy and affects disease prognosis in stroke patients. Many factors may be related to PSD, including demographic, comorbidities, and examination characteristics. However, most existing methods are qualitative evaluations of independent factors, which ignore the interaction amongst various factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the applicability of machine learning (ML) methods for predicting PSD. METHODS: 9 acceptable features were screened out by the Spearman correlation analysis

Machine Learning-Based Perivascular Space Volumetry in Alzheimer Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Impaired perivascular clearance has been suggested as a contributing factor to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease (AD). However, it remains unresolved when the anatomy of the perivascular space (PVS) is altered during AD progression. Therefore, this study investigates the association between PVS volume and AD progression in cognitively unimpaired (CU) individuals, both with and without subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and in those clinically diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild AD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A convolutional neural network was trained using manu

RAIN: machine learning-based identification for HIV-1 bNAbs.

Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) are promising candidates for the treatment and prevention of HIV-1 infections. Despite their critical importance, automatic detection of HIV-1 bNAbs from immune repertoires is still lacking. Here, we develop a straightforward computational method for the Rapid Automatic Identification of bNAbs (RAIN) based on machine learning methods. In contrast to other approaches, which use one-hot encoding amino acid sequences or structural alignment for prediction, RAIN uses a combination of selected sequence-based features for the accurate prediction of HIV-1 bNAbs

Circulating miRNAs and Machine Learning for Lateralizing Primary Aldosteronism.

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing between unilateral and bilateral primary aldosteronism, a major cause of secondary hypertension, is crucial due to different treatment approaches. While adrenal venous sampling is the gold standard, its invasiveness, limited availability, and often difficult interpretation pose challenges. This study explores the utility of circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) and machine learning in distinguishing between unilateral and bilateral forms of primary aldosteronism. METHODS: MiRNA profiling was conducted on plasma samples from 18 patients with primary aldosteronism taken duri

Efficient Creation of Jettability Diagrams Using Active Machine Learning.

The ability to jet a wide variety of materials consistently from print heads remains a key technical challenge for inkjet-based additive manufacturing processes. Drop watching is the most direct method for testing new inks and print head designs but such experiments are also resource consuming. In this work, a data-efficient machine learning technique called active learning is used to construct detailed jettability diagrams that identify complex regions corresponding to "no jetting," "jetting," and "desired jetting," rather than only individually sampled points. Crucially, our active learning

Machine Learning-Based Gesture Recognition Glove: Design and Implementation.

In the evolving field of human-computer interaction (HCI), gesture recognition has emerged as a critical focus, with smart gloves equipped with sensors playing one of the most important roles. Despite the significance of dynamic gesture recognition, most research on data gloves has concentrated on static gestures, with only a small percentage addressing dynamic gestures or both. This study explores the development of a low-cost smart glove prototype designed to capture and classify dynamic hand gestures for game control and presents a prototype of data gloves equipped with five flex sensors, f

Machine-Learning-Accelerated DFT Conformal Sampling of Catalytic Processes.

Computational modeling of catalytic processes at gas/solid interfaces plays an increasingly important role in chemistry, enabling accelerated materials and process optimization and rational design. However, efficiency, accuracy, thoroughness, and throughput must be enhanced to maximize its practical impact. By combining interpolation of DFT energetics via highly accurate Machine-Learning Potentials with conformal techniques for building the training database, we present here an original approach (that we name Conformal Sampling of Catalytic Processes, CSCP), to accelerate and achieve an accura
