Why Did a Female Penis Evolve in a Small Group of Cave Insects?

The evolution of a female penis is an extremely rare event and is only known to have occurred in a tribe of small cave insects, Sensitibillini (Psocodea: Trogiomorpha: Prionoglarididae). The female penis, which is protrudable and inserted into the male vagina-like cavity during copulation to receive semen, is thought to have evolved independently twice in this tribe, in the Brazilian Neotrogla and the African Afrotrogla. These findings strongly suggest that there are some factors unique to Sensitibillini that have facilitated female penis evolution. Here, several hypothetical factors are prese

The social instability stress paradigm in rat and mouse: A systematic review of protocols, limitations, and recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Social stress is an important environmental risk factor for the development of psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety disorders. Social stress paradigms are commonly used in rats and mice to gain insight into the pathogenesis of these disorders. The social instability stress (SIS) paradigm entails frequent (up to several times a week) introduction of one or multiple unfamiliar same-sex home-cage partners. The subsequent recurring formation of a new social hierarchy results in chronic and unpredictable physical and social stress. PURPOSE: We compare and discuss the

Weaning management of newly received beef calves with or without continuous exposure to a persistently infected bovine viral diarrhea virus pen mate: effects on rectal temperature and serum proinflammatory cytokine and haptoglobin concentrations.

Exposure to animals persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) results in immunomodulation in cohorts. It is hypothesized that the extent of modulation differs for low-risk, preconditioned (PC) vs. high-risk, auction market (AM) beef cattle. Our objective was to compare immune responses of PC or AM calves in the presence (PI) or absence (CON) of a PI-BVDV pen mate. Crossbred PC steers (n = 27) from a single ranch origin were weaned, dewormed, vaccinated against respiratory and clostridial pathogens, tested for PI-BVDV, and kept on the ranch for 61 d. Subsequently, PC st

Fertility impairment in granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor-deficient mice.

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) has been identified as a potentially important mediator of intercellular communication in the female reproductive tract, with principal target cells being the large populations of myeloid leukocytes in the cycling and pregnant uterus, the preimplantation embryo, and trophoblast cells of the developing placenta. To determine the physiological significance of this cytokine in reproduction, the fertility of genetically GM-CSF-deficient (GM-/-) mice was examined. Implantation rates were normal in GM-/- mice, and viable pups were produced. H

Ecology of danger-dependent cytokine-boosted spontaneous abortion in the CBA x DBA/2 mouse model. I. Synergistic effect of LPS and (TNF-alpha + IFN-gamma) on pregnancy loss.

PROBLEM: Previous data have shown "danger" signals, such as bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) acting via toll-like (tlr) receptors are required for early pregnancy failure in several murine abortion models. Indeed, the abortion rate increased in the CBA x DBA/2 model after a gestation day (gd) 7.5 injection of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha + interferon (IFN)-gamma only if the LPS-tlr signalling pathway was intact. High rates of cytokine-boosted abortion >80% loss can be achieved in certain animal colonies, that have a high endogenous (spontaneous) rate of resorption (30-50%). A specific

PM2.5 from automobile exhaust induces apoptosis in male rat germ cells via the ROS-UPRmt signaling pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the underlying mechanism behind the fine particulate matter's (PM2.5)-mediated regulation of reproductive function in male rats, and to determine the role of vitamins in this process. METHODS: In all, 32 male SD rats were randomized to a control cohort (normal saline), a Vit cohort (vitamin C at 100 mg/kg +  vitamin E at 50 mg/kg), a PM2.5 cohort (PM2.5 10 mg/kg), and a PM2.5 + Vit cohort (PM2.5 exposure +  vitamin C at 100 mg/kg +  vitamin E at 50 mg/kg), with eight rats in each cohort. After four weeks of exposure, mating experiments were carried out. Thereafter, rats

Neuroprotective Effects of Trilobatin, a Novel Naturally Occurring Sirt3 Agonist from Lithocarpus polystachyus Rehd., Mitigate Cerebral Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury: Involvement of TLR4/NF-κB and Nrf2/Keap-1 Signaling.

Aims: Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress are deemed the prime causes of brain injury after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). Since the silent mating-type information regulation 2 homologue 3 (Sirt3) pathway plays an imperative role in protecting against neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, it has been verified as a target to treat ischemia stroke. Therefore, we attempted to seek novel Sirt3 agonist and explore its underlying mechanism for stroke treatment both in vivo and in vitro. Results: Trilobatin (TLB) not only dramatically suppressed neuroinflammation and oxidative stress injur

Panmictic structure of the Cryptosporidium parvum population in Irish calves: influence of prevalence and host movement.

In total, 245 Cryptosporidium parvum specimens obtained from calves in 205 Irish herds between 2003 and 2005 were subtyped by sequencing the glycoprotein gene gp60 and performing multilocus analysis of seven markers. The transmission dynamics of C. parvum and the influence of temporal, spatial, parasitic, and host-related factors on the parasite (sub)populations were studied. The relationship of those factors to the risk of cryptosporidiosis was also investigated using results from 1,368 fecal specimens submitted to the veterinary laboratories for routine diagnosis during 2005. The prevalence

Gene conversion restores selfing in experimentally evolving C. elegans populations with fog-2 loss-of-function mutation.

We have discovered a new case of gene conversion restoring ability of self-fertilization in obligatory outcrossing Caenorhabditis elegans populations. The fog-2(q71) mutation, used to transform the nematodes’ mating system from mostly self-fertilization to obligatory outcrossing, was spontaneously removed by replacing a fragment of fog-2 gene with a fragment of its paralog, ftr-1 . This has occurred spontaneously in experimental evolution with large populations, evolving with fog-2(q71) mutation for over a hundred generations, without addition mutagens or other factors promoting mutation acc

The Motivation-Facilitation Model of Sexual Offending.

In this article, I describe the motivation-facilitation model of sexual offending, which identifies the traits of paraphilia, high sex drive, and intense mating effort as primary motivations for sexual offenses, as well as trait (e.g., antisocial personality) and state (e.g., intoxication) factors that can facilitate acting on these motivations when opportunities exist. Originally developed to explain contact sexual offending against children, the motivation-facilitation model was subsequently extended as an explanation for child pornography offending and for online solicitations of young adol

The effects of natural mating and artificial insemination on reproductive traits of 1-and 2-year-old domestic Turkish geese.

The aim of this study was to assess the sperm quality traits of 1- and 2-year-old ganders and the reproduction traits of 2-year-old domestic Turkish geese in natural mating (NM) and artificial insemination (AI) conditions. The study comprised 72 two-year-old females, 12 one-year-old, and 12 two-year-old ganders. Thirty-six female geese were mated naturally (18 with 1-year-old ganders, 18 with 2-year-old ganders); the remaining thirty-six were inseminated artificially (18 with 1-year-old ganders, 18 with 2-year-old ganders). Twenty-four ganders were separated into groups (12 for NM; 12 for AI).

Pre-gestational restraint stress affects reproductive outcomes in adult rats by modulating ovarian and uterine function.

The impact of gestational stress on reproductive outcomes is well-established, but the effects of pre-gestational stress remain inconclusive. Using female Wistar rats, we demonstrated that pre-gestational stress negatively affects fertility and pregnancy outcomes. The rats were subjected to restraint stress (RS) for 15 days, with 3 h of stress each day, before mating. The RS group exhibited higher levels of corticosterone and prolactin, along with lower levels of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), indicating a successful stress model. Stressed rats showed reduced fertility and fecundity indic

Effect of Prenatal Waterpipe Tobacco Smoke Exposure on Cardiac Biomarkers in Adult Offspring Rats.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of waterpipe tobacco smoke (WTS) consumption is increased among pregnant woman. Prenatal cigarette smoke exposure increased the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in offspring. The current study examined the effect of prenatal WTS exposure on inflammatory profile, oxidative stress, and cardiac biomarkers in adult offspring rats. METHODS: Female rats received WTS (2 hours per day) or fresh air 1 day prior to mating and throughout the pregnancy period. The body and heart masses were measured in male offspring rats. The level of oxidative stress biomarkers, n

Mesangial cell αvβ8-integrin regulates glomerular capillary integrity and repair.

αvβ8-Integrin is most abundantly expressed in the kidney, brain, and female reproductive organs, and its cognate ligand is latent transforming growth factor (LTGF)-β. Kidney αvβ8-integrin localizes to mesangial cells, and global β8-integrin gene (Itgb8) deletion results in embryonic lethality due to impaired placentation and cerebral hemorrhage. To circumvent the lethality and better define kidney αvβ8-integrin function, Cre-lox technology was used to generate mesangial-specific Itgb8-null mice. Platelet-derived growth factor-β receptor (PDGFBR)-Cre mice crossed with a reporter strain revealed

Analysis of the role of Igf2 in adrenal tumour development in transgenic mouse models.

Adrenal cortical carcinomas (ACC) are rare but aggressive tumours associated with poor prognosis. The two most frequent alterations in ACC in patients are overexpression of the growth factor IGF2 and constitutive activation of Wnt/β-catenin signalling. Using a transgenic mouse model, we have previously shown that constitutive active β-catenin is a bona fide adrenal oncogene. However, although all these mice developed benign adrenal hyperplasia, malignant progression was infrequent, suggesting that secondary genetic events were required for aggressive tumour development. In the present paper, w

Aplysia temptin - the 'glue' in the water-borne attractin pheromone complex.

Temptin, a component of the complex of water-borne protein pheromones that stimulate attraction and mating behavior in the marine mollusk Aplysia, has sequence homology to the epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domains of higher organisms that mediate protein-cell surface contact during fertilization and blood coagulation. In this work, recombinant temptin for structural and functional studies was produced in Escherichia coli using a cold shock promoter and purified by RP-HPLC. CD spectra confirmed a predominantly beta-sheet structure. Two disulfide bonds were determined via limited proteolysi

Risk factors for barbering in laboratory mice.

Barbering is a common abnormal behavior in laboratory mice, where mice pluck their own fur and/or the fur or whiskers of their cage mates. Barbering mice are a concern for welfare and research quality, as well as serving as a spontaneous model of trichotillomania (a hair-pulling disorder in humans). Causes and prevention of barbering are poorly understood, although there is evidence that both biological and environmental factors play a role in its prevalence. Since initial work in this area was done 20 years ago, mouse husbandry has changed dramatically. We provide an updated analysis of risk

Characterization of 21 microsatellite loci for the precocious, grass-shrimp trematode Alloglossidium renale.

We developed microsatellite markers to use in studying the population genetics of the trematode Alloglossidium renale, a fluke with a precocious life cycle where sexual maturation occurs in a grass shrimp. Among 21 tested loci in a Mississippi population sample, 14 were polymorphic, 12 of which significantly deviated from Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE). We estimated identity disequilibrium (ID) to confirm whether the deviations from HWE were due to significant amounts of selfing or due to technical factors. The selfing rate derived from FIS was 86.6%, whereas the selfing rate obtained by ID

Tonic immobility as a survival, adaptive response and as a recovery mechanism.

In this conclusive chapter, we review findings giving support to the hypothesis that TI represents an adaptive, survival response to threatening situations. In models of prey-predator interactions, in vertebrates and invertebrates, there are evidence that immobility per se contributes to survival, as the predator loses interest for a prey in which TI is experimentally induced. TI duration is also reciprocally modulated by the evaluation of the risk factors in the environment, and by the opportunity to reach a safe refuge. This supports the adaptive value of TI and suggests that, during TI, the
