OBJECTIVE: To describe the pathologic features in four cases of hepatic angiomyolipoma, a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of the liver.
DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of surgical specimens from four patients, with immunohistochemical and flow cytometric studies.
RESULTS: None of the patients carried a diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis. All four tumors were large and well circumscribed, and one patient had multiple lesions. The neoplasms were composed of numerous vessels and exhibited a predominance of epithelioid smooth muscle cells. The low amount of fat in these four cases was not sufficient t

Three cases of primary NTRK-rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the lung with resemblance to those described in the somatic soft tissues are presented. The patients are 2 males and 1 female with age at presentation ranging from 31 to 45 years (mean, 36 y). All the 3 tumors were discovered incidentally during physical examinations. None of the patients had any prior history of mesenchymal neoplasms anywhere else. Computed tomography revealed intrapulmonary mass located in the right upper lobe, left upper lobe, and left lower lobe, respectively. All the patients underwent lobectomy. Grossly, the

The Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumor (SMT) is an uncommon neoplasm. It arises mainly in 3 immunosuppression settings: HIV-associated SMT; drug-related immunosuppression in transplant recipients; and congenital immunodeficiency disorder-associated SMT. We present 18 F-FDG PET/CT findings of an adrenal Epstein-Barr virus-associated SMT in a 65-year-old woman with a history of follicular lymphoma after chemotherapy.

Vulvar Leiomyoma is an extremely rare benign tumor of smooth muscle origin, accounting for a small fraction of Vulvar neoplasms. It often mimics Bartholin's cyst or other soft tissue masses, posing diagnostic challenges. We present a case of a 19-year-old unmarried woman with a Vulvar mass. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Vulvar Leiomyoma with no evidence of malignancy. Vulvar leiomyoma's should be considered in the differential diagnosis of Vulvar masses. Accurate diagnosis requires histopathological analysis. Complete surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Thi

Adult rhabdomyoma is a rare benign tumor of striated muscle origin, predominantly occurring in the head and neck region of middle-aged males. Herein, we present a unique case of a 78 year-old woman with a 7.3 × 3.8 × 5.4 cm supraglottic rhabdomyoma causing progressive dysphagia, dysphonia, and life-threatening airway obstruction over 5 to 7 years. Despite its benign histology, the tumor's size and location necessitated emergent airway stabilization and partial resection. This report highlights the tumor's atypical presentation in an elderly female, its unprecedented dimensions, and the clinica

Mesenchymal tumors of the prostate are rare but often cause considerable diagnostic difficulty when encountered. These may be either benign or malignant and can arise within the prostate gland or in adjacent tissues. This review covers prostatic stromal proliferations (prostatic stromal tumor of uncertain malignant potential and stromal sarcoma), solitary fibrous tumor, myofibroblastic proliferations, smooth muscle neoplasms (leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma), gastrointestinal stromal tumor, schwannoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, sarcomatoid carcinoma, postradiation sarcoma, and mixed epithelial stromal tu

Leiomyomas are common smooth muscle neoplasms; however, leiomyomas of the seminal vesicles are extremely rare. We report a case of seminal vesicle leiomyoma in a 55-year-old African American male who underwent robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) for Gleason 8 (4 + 4) adenocarcinoma. An incidental nodule arising from the left seminal vesicle was discovered during surgery, complicating the surgical dissection and suggesting extra-prostatic extension. The histologic findings in this case raised the possibility that this seminal vesicle leiomyoma may have arisen from a remnant of the

Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare disease from a group of tumors with the indefinite grading potential. The paper describes two cases of intravenous leiomyomatosis with its detailed morphological pattern, molecular genetic findings, and a brief literature review. Losses of heterozygosity of microsatellite repeats thatwere located on chromosome 10 in 10q22.1 and common in uterine leiomyosarcomas were found in both cases. Investigations of the morphological and biological characteristics of leimyomatosis are important to clarify the key molecular mechanisms underlying the development of this

Lipomas are the most common subtype of benign soft tissue neoplasms and can occur anywhere in the body. Differentiation into a diversity of mesenchymal elements, such as blood vessels, fibrous tissue or muscle, is a frequent event. However, the presence of bone or cartilage in these tumors is extraordinarily rare with very few cases reported in the head and neck area. We report a case of an 'osteochondrolipoma' of the chest wall, in a young individual, providing a rationale in support of this as a possible and distinctive histologic subtype of lipomas, as well as discussion in the differential

The diagnosis of benign metastasizing leiomyoma BML is a casuic case. The term is used to describe a entity of neoplasms characterized by a proliferation of smooth muscle cells with low mitotic index, usually located outside female genital organs. In the world literature there are reports of benign metastasizing leiomyomas in the lungs, skull base and spine, the lymph nodes of the small pelvis and the heart. In the following study the authors analyzed a case of a 72-year-old woman in which, during hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyomas, a nodule of the small intestine was found, confirmed hist

Sarcoma of the kidney is a rare condition. Leiomyosarcoma is the most common of the kidney sarcomas. Renal leiomyosarcoma usually originates from the smooth muscle layers of the kidney, for example, the renal capsule and renal vessels. Renal pelvis neoplasms, however, are primarily transitional cell carcinomas, and renal pelvis leiomyosarcomas are extremely uncommon. Renal pelvis leiomyosarcoma has never been reported in Korea. Moreover, no more than 10 cases have been reported internationally. However, none of these were associated with kidney abnormalities. Here we describe a case of leiomyo

FET (encompassing both EWSR1 and FUS) fusions with genes from the CREB family (CREB1, ATF1, and CREM) are involved in a variety of neoplasms. Recently, FET::CREB fusions were recognized in a group of malignant epithelioid neoplasm with a striking predilection to mesothelial-lined cavities and frequent cytokeratin immunoexpression. Herein, we report a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with epithelioid morphology and nonspecific immunoprofile harboring a FUS::CREM fusion arising in the oral tongue of a 53-year-old man. Histology showed a well-circumscribed tumor composed of epithelioid cells with eosino

Of the twelve cranial nerves, nine supply motor innervation to the muscles of the head and neck. Loss of this motor nerve supply, or denervation, follows a series of predictable chronologic changes in the affected muscles. Although the length of time between each change is markedly variable, denervation is typically classified into three distinct time points: (a) acute, (b) subacute, and (c) chronic. These muscle changes produce characteristic findings on images, with contrast-enhanced MRI being the preferred modality for assessment. Imaging allows radiologists to not only identify denervation

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder primarily affecting male children and resulting in progressive degeneration and attempted regeneration of muscle with replacement of myofibers by adipose and fibrotic tissue. DMD patients have mutations in the DMD gene encoding for the large cytoskeletal protein dystrophin, which plays an essential role in the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) as a structural connector within cardiac and skeletal muscle. The absence of dystrophin and DGC proteins leads to increased membrane fragility, dysregulation of calcium homeostasis,

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of CD147 expression in uterine smooth muscle neoplasms, as a potential diagnostic and prognostic marker in patients with leiomyosarcoma (LMS).
STUDY DESIGN: We investigated CD147 protein expression in uterine smooth muscle tumor samples from patients diagnosed with leiomyoma (n = 22), atypical leiomyoma (BLM) (n = 5), smooth muscle tumor of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) (n = 14), and LMS (n = 22). The intensity and extensity of immunohistochemical staining were compared to determine its potential role in differential diagnosis. Spearman's rank correl

Mesenchymal tumors and tumor-like lesions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are uncommon. They vary from reactive tumefactive lesions and benign neoplasms to highly aggressive sarcomas. Among them, GI stromal tumors (GISTs) are most common, followed, with less frequency, by smooth muscle and neurogenic tumors. The major challenge resides in correctly identifying GISTs and providing a comprehensive report (including risk assessment and genotyping) that represents the basis for an optimized surgical-oncological treatment and/or adjuvant therapy. On the other hand, the challenge of benign lesion

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a rare group of neoplasms composed of epithelioid cells that express both melanocytic and myoid markers. When considering PEComas of the female genital tract, the uterus is the most common location. Involvement of the ovary in the context of a primary uterine PEComa, in the absence of systemic disease associated with tuberous sclerosis, however, has only been reported in 1 previous case.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a PEComa of the uterus with metastasis to the left ovary in a 61-year-old Caucasian woman. Gross examination of

Osteomas of the jaws are rare osteogenic lesions considered to be true neoplasms, characterized by the proliferation of compact and/or cancellous bone. It can be central, peripheral, or of an extraskeletal type. The central osteoma arises from the endosteum, the peripheral osteoma from the periosteum, and the extraskeletal soft tissue osteoma usually develops within a muscle. However, in a previous work we have suggested that at least some peripheral osteomas may be reactive rather than neoplasms, probably associated with trauma. Some reported cases did have a clear history of trauma; however,

Leiomyosarcomas are rare neoplasms of the smooth muscles. Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcomas, which constitute approximately 0.2%-0.5% of all primary lung malignancies, are extremely rare and highly lethal. They may originate from the smooth muscle cells of the bronchial wall, the blood vessels, or the pulmonary interstitium, and their rare occurrence, localization, and nonspecific clinical symptoms mean that correct diagnosis and proper management are often delayed. Here, we report a rapidly growing primary pulmonary leiomyosarcoma, which invaded the right atrium, vena cava superior, mediastin

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a rare condition, affecting predominantly reproductive-age females with uterine leiomyomata and is most often associated with multiple benign-appearing smooth muscle tumors in lungs. We report herein a case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with multiple uterine fibroids for which hysterectomy was carried out on her. Postoperatively, she developed left-sided pleural effusion. Computed chest tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple nodules in both lungs and pleurae. Histopathology of one of the pleura-based nodules revealed a neoplasm composed of interla
