Radial basis function neural network application to power system restoration studies.

One of the most important issues in power system restoration is overvoltages caused by transformer switching. These overvoltages might damage some equipment and delay power system restoration. This paper presents a radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) to study transformer switching overvoltages. To achieve good generalization capability for developed RBFNN, equivalent parameters of the network are added to RBFNN inputs. The developed RBFNN is trained with the worst-case scenario of switching angle and remanent flux and tested for typical cases. The simulated results for a partial of 39

A separable neural code in monkey IT enables perfect CAPTCHA decoding.

Reading distorted letters is easy for us but so challenging for the machine vision that it is used on websites as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart). How does our brain solve this problem? One solution is to have neurons selective for letter combinations but invariant to distortions. Another is for neurons to encode letter distortions and longer strings to enable separable decoding. Here, we provide evidence for the latter possibility using neural recordings in the monkey inferior temporal (IT) cortex. Neural responses to distorted strings were

A mechanistic theory of planning in prefrontal cortex.

Planning is critical for adaptive behaviour in a changing world, because it lets us anticipate the future and adjust our actions accordingly. While prefrontal cortex is crucial for this process, it remains unknown how planning is implemented in neural circuits. Prefrontal representations were recently discovered in simpler sequence memory tasks, where different populations of neurons represent different future time points. We demonstrate that combining such representations with the ubiquitous principle of neural attractor dynamics allows circuits to solve much richer problems, including planni

Adaptive Convolutional Neural Network-Enhanced Scale-Fusion Network for Human Activity Recognition Using Wearable Sensors.

Deep learning has achieved notable success in sensor-based human activity recognition (SHAR), yet wearable inertial signals contain activity patterns at different temporal scales while practical deployment imposes strict computational constraints. This paper proposes a three-stage Adaptive CNN-Enhanced Scale-fusion Network (ACESNet) for six-channel accelerometer-gyroscope activity recognition. The Adaptive Kernel Encoder dynamically combines temporal kernels of different sizes, while the CNN-Enhanced Scale-fusion design combines multi-scale temporal mixing, explicit channel mixing and a parall

Simultaneous detection of water content and ferulic acid content in Angelica sinensis using NIR-HSI and multi-task hierarchical attention CNN.

To achieve rapid, nondestructive, and intelligent quality detection of A. sinensis, this study combines NIR-HSI technology with deep learning. It proposes a multi-task convolutional neural network (MT-CNN) equipped with a multi-head hierarchical attention mechanism. First, a multi-task sample partitioning algorithm (MSPXY) was developed with two target variables to improve the representativeness and balance of sample division. Second, a multi-head hierarchical attention mechanism (4HSA + 8HSA) was added to the convolutional neural network to capture both local and global spectral features. Fin

Quantum convolutional HLA immunogenic peptide prediction (Q-CHIPP): Next-generation neoantigen prediction with quantum neural network.

The rapid growth of quantum computing is driven by promises of performing complex calculations with unprecedented speed; however, current use cases have been limited by quantum hardware and the difficulty of identifying problems that classical computers cannot easily address. Within these constraints, biological problems including drug discovery, protein folding, and precision medicine present an opportunity to understand how current quantum hardware can make advances. In immunology, accurate prediction of cancer neoantigens remains a major challenge, limited by small, noisy datasets and the i

Efficient multi-task CNN framework for joint identification of soybean leaf diseases and pesticide presence with explainable AI.

Soybean production is significantly affected by crop diseases and improper pesticide use, which hinder effective disease management and reduce yield. In this study, we propose an efficient multi-task convolutional neural network (CNN) framework for the simultaneous detection of soybean seed diseases and pesticide presence from seed images. The model leverages a shared feature extraction backbone with task-specific output heads to learn complementary features for both disease classification and pesticide detection. A dataset of 429 soybean leaf images was preprocessed using normalization and au

Deep-DoPIo: Deep Learning for Shear Elasticity Prediction in Double-Profile Intersection Ultrasound.

We herein propose Deep-DoPIo, a deep learning-based framework that predicts shear elastic modulus from paired narrow- and wide-track displacement profiles generated by a single acoustic radiation force (ARF) push. Unlike the traditional double-profile intersection (DoPIo) ultrasound technique, which relates the intersection time (tint) between these profiles to shear modulus through a linear empirical model, Deep-DoPIo leverages neural networks to learn this mapping directly from the displacement data. Four architectures were evaluated: a feedforward neural network (FFNN), a 1-D convolutional

Dispersion based recurrent neural network model for methane monitoring in Albertan tailings ponds.

Bitumen extraction for the production of synthetic crude oil in Canada's Athabasca Oil Sands industry has recently come under spotlight for being a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. A major cause of concern is methane, a greenhouse gas produced by the anaerobic biodegradation of hydrocarbon in oil sands residues, or tailing, stored in settle basins commonly known as oil sands tailing ponds. In this work, we build a data-driven modeling framework to determine the methane emitting potential of these tailing ponds and have future methane projections using a Dispersion based Recurren

A Parallel Adaboost-Backpropagation Neural Network for Massive Image Dataset Classification.

Image classification uses computers to simulate human understanding and cognition of images by automatically categorizing images. This study proposes a faster image classification approach that parallelizes the traditional Adaboost-Backpropagation (BP) neural network using the MapReduce parallel programming model. First, we construct a strong classifier by assembling the outputs of 15 BP neural networks (which are individually regarded as weak classifiers) based on the Adaboost algorithm. Second, we design Map and Reduce tasks for both the parallel Adaboost-BP neural network and the feature ex

Stiffness-Switchable Conductive Nanocomposites with Temperature-Invariant Conductivity for Long-Term Brain-Computer Interfaces on Hair-Covered Scalp.

Reliable neural recording on densely hair-covered scalp remains challenging due to the incompatibility between efficient hair penetration, conformal skin contact, and low-impedance electrical interfacing. Here, we report a claw-shaped dry electrode that integrates thermoresponsive phase-transition networks for reversible stiffness switching, with temperature-invariant conductivity enabled by crystallization-induced confinement, achieving comfortable, low-impedance neural interfacing on densely hair-covered scalps. Task-specific neural networks for medical imaging using pretrained fragments.

The StitchNet framework introduced a paradigm shift in Neural Architecture Search (NAS) by proposing the construction of neural networks from pre-trained fragments. This approach reduces computational costs and enables task-specific model creation without retraining entire networks. Building on this foundation, our study evaluates the practical application of StitchNet in constructing neural networks tailored to medical image classification tasks. Specifically, we assess its performance on a dataset of retinal images classified into three categories: healthy, dry, and wet AMD (Age-Related Macu

A multi-class framework for fish species classification using deep learning technique.

Fish species recognition is essential for ecological studies, fishery management, and marine biology. Accurate detection and categorization are critical for preserving biodiversity, allowing scientists to track species distribution, identify invasive species, and analyze the effects of environmental changes. The fish sector is essential to any country's food and agriculture. Identification of species by the morphology process is both inaccurate and costly. However, the manual process of measuring important details like species identification, length, and quantity is difficult to capture, which

MedNeXt for accurate medical image classification and segmentation: A lightweight transformer-style convolutional neural network.

Transformer-based deep learning architectures have achieved notable success across various medical image analysis tasks, driven by the global modeling capabilities of the self-attention mechanism. However, Transformer-based methods exhibit significant computational complexity and a large number of parameters, rendering them challenging to apply effectively in practical medical scenarios. Compared with Transformers, large-kernel Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) offer more efficient inference while retaining global contextual awareness. Deep optimization-guided hybrid neural network for accurate detection and segmentation of white matter hyperintensities in clinical MRI images.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are common radiological findings in brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and are strongly associated with neurological disorders such as stroke, dementia, and multiple sclerosis. Accurate detection and segmentation of WMHs are crucial for early diagnosis, disease progression analysis, and treatment planning. However, manual delineation of WMHs is labour-intensive, time-consuming, and prone to inter-observer variability, which limits its practicality in large-scale clinical and research settings. Deep learning has shown promise in automating WMH analysis;
