Brain-Computer Interface Improves Symptoms of Isolated Focal Laryngeal Dystonia: A Single-Blind Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal dystonia (LD) is a focal task-specific dystonia, affecting speaking but not whispering or emotional vocalizations. Therapeutic options for LD are limited. We developed and tested a non-invasive, closed-loop, neurofeedback, brain-computer interface (BCI) intervention for LD treatment. METHODS: Ten patients with isolated focal LD participated in the study. The personalized BCI system included visual neurofeedback of individual real-time electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during symptomatic speaking compared to asymptomatic whispering, presented in the vir

One-Class FMRI-Inspired EEG Model for Self-Regulation Training.

Recent evidence suggests that learned self-regulation of localized brain activity in deep limbic areas such as the amygdala, may alleviate symptoms of affective disturbances. Thus far self-regulation of amygdala activity could be obtained only via fMRI guided neurofeedback, an expensive and immobile procedure. EEG on the other hand is relatively inexpensive and can be easily implemented in any location. However the clinical utility of EEG neurofeedback for affective disturbances remains limited due to low spatial resolution, which hampers the targeting of deep limbic areas such as the amygdala

The relative efficacy of connectivity guided and symptom based EEG biofeedback for autistic disorders.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, and a limited range of interests with repetitive stereotypical behavior. Various abnormalities have been documented in the brains of individuals with autism, both anatomically and functionally. The connectivity theory of autism is a recently developed theory of the neurobiological cause of autisic symptoms. Different patterns of hyper- and hypo-connectivity have been identified with the use of quantitative electroencephalogray (QEEG), which may be amenable to neurofeedback. In this study, we

Co-Boost: boosting and guiding neuroplasticity by combining ketamine with neurofeedback-assisted learning-towards an individualised and integrated pharmaco-psychotherapy for cocaine addiction: study protocol for a randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group, single-centre trial.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine is the most frequently used stimulant worldwide, with increasing consumption rates in Europe. Cocaine use is associated with great harm to individuals and society. As of today, psychotherapeutic interventions for cocaine use disorder (CUD) demonstrate only modest effect sizes, and no pharmacotherapy has been approved due to gaps in understanding the disease. However, a novel pharmacotherapeutic target, i.e. glutamatergic neurotransmission, emerged from animal models of addiction. Specifically, after chronic cocaine administration, glutamate concentrations in the nucleus acc

Theta and Beta1 Frequency Band Values Predict Dyslexia Classification.

Dyslexia, impacting children's reading skills, prompts families to seek cost-effective neurofeedback therapy solutions. Utilising machine learning, we identified predictive factors for dyslexia classification. Employing advanced techniques, we gathered 14-channel Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) data from 200 participants, achieving 99.6% dyslexic classification accuracy through cross-validation. During validation, 48% of dyslexic children's sessions were consistently classified as normal, with a 95% confidence interval of 47.31 to 48.68. Focusing on individuals consistently diagnose

Neurofeedback intervention based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy compared with sham control to improve inhibitory cognitive control in patients with severe obesity and food addiction: The protocol of a monocentric prospective randomized parallel-group single-blind interventional study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Overconsumption of hyperpalatable foods and obesity are associated with reduced activity of brain regions involved in executive functions, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). Neurofeedback (NF) based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) appears as an easily feasible neuromodulation method to assist voluntary improvement of inhibitory cognitive control. This study is primarily designed to assess the efficacy of fNIRS-based NF training targeting the dlPFC for strengthening inhibitory control in patients with food addiction (FA) and obesity. METHO

The psychopathology of mood disorders: implications for identifying neurocognitive intervention targets.

BACKGROUND: Neurofeedback and neuromodulation treatments are of increasing clinical interest, but their neurocognitive targets are poorly understood. METHODS: In this review, we will use Jaspers' phenomenological psychopathology combined with modern network analysis to identify neurocognitive treatment targets by focussing on distinctive and necessary symptoms of mood disorders as well as their subsyndromal and prognostic variations. RESULTS: We discuss the early descriptions of Kraepelin's mixed affective states and suggest a model of four mood states (depressed, anxious, irritable, and ela

Neuropsychological and metabolic interconnectivity in obesity, anorexia and bulimia nervosa - an integrative literature review.

A dysfunctional bi-directional signalling of plural neural networks expresses distinct metabolic disruption with mental health consequences in obesity, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Maladaptive brain-gut connectivities lead to multifactorial contributing factors raising the interest of researchers in an effort to address their neurobiological, psychological and metabolic factors to improved mental health outcomes. The first aim of this review was to collate clinical evidence on brainstem-hypothalamus pathways in obesity, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Further, it sought to descr

Volitional control of beta activities in Parkinson's disease patients.

Patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) have difficulty initiating and executing movements due to an acquired imbalance of the basal ganglia thalamocortical circuit secondary to loss of dopaminergic input into the striatum. The unbalanced circuit is hyper-synchronized, presenting as larger and longer bursts of beta-band (13-30 Hz) oscillations in the subthalamic nucleus (STN). As a first step toward a novel PD therapy that aims to improve symptoms through beta desynchronization, we sought to determine if individuals with PD could acquire volitional control of STN beta power in a neuro

Efficacy of Invasive and Non-Invasive Brain Modulation Interventions for Addiction.

It is important to find new treatments for addiction due to high relapse rates despite current interventions and due to expansion of the field with non-substance related addictive behaviors. Neuromodulation may provide a new type of treatment for addiction since it can directly target abnormalities in neurocircuits. We review literature on five neuromodulation techniques investigated for efficacy in substance related and behavioral addictions: transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), (repetitive) transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), EEG, fMRI neurofeedback and deep brain stimulatio

Volitional reduction of anterior cingulate cortex activity produces decreased cue craving in smoking cessation: a preliminary real-time fMRI study.

Numerous research groups are now using analysis of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) results and relaying back information about regional activity in their brains to participants in the scanner in 'real time'. In this study, we explored the feasibility of self-regulation of frontal cortical activation using real-time fMRI (rtfMRI) neurofeedback in nicotine-dependent cigarette smokers during exposure to smoking cues. Ten cigarette smokers were shown smoking-related visual cues in a 3 Tesla MRI scanner to induce their nicotine craving. Participants

The influence of extrovert-introvert personality on children's cortical activation with attention training systems.

Extrovert-introvert personality can take an active role in affecting people's attitudes, tastes, and behaviors in education. However, little research has been conducted to study whether and how extrovert-introvert personality may influence children's interaction with the attention training system. In this manuscript, we present the results of a user study that not only measured the influence of children's extrovert-introvert personality on their preference for two typical types of attention training systems (i.e., cognitive-based and neurofeedback-based) but also employed functional near-infra

Balancing the brain of offenders with psychopathy? Resting state EEG and electrodermal activity after a pilot study of brain self-regulation training.

Although investigation of the brains of criminals began quite early in the history of psychophysiological research, little is known about brain plasticity of offenders with psychopathy. Building on our preliminary study reporting successful brain self-regulation using slow cortical potential (SCP) neurofeedback in offenders with psychopathy, we investigated the central nervous and autonomic peripheral changes occurring after brain self-regulation in a group of severe male offenders with psychopathy. Regarding the central nervous system, an overall suppression of the psychopathic overrepresenta

Modulation of neuroendocrine and autonomic responses to competitive stress by slow cortical potentials training in golfers: An exploratory randomized controlled trial.

Performance in precision sports such as golf depends on the athlete's ability to regulate psychophysiological responses under competitive pressure. Heart rate variability (HRV), cortisol, and DHEA provide complementary indices of autonomic and endocrine adaptation to competitive stress, and SCP neurofeedback represents a potential training approach for cortical self-regulation, although evidence in athletes remains limited. This study evaluated a standardized SCP training protocol in golfers by examining cortisol, DHEA and HRV responses during simulated competitions and putting performance. In
