Eugenol, a Component of Holy Basil (Tulsi) and Common Spice Clove, Inhibits the Interaction Between SARS-CoV-2 Spike S1 and ACE2 to Induce Therapeutic Responses.

Spike S1 of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) on host cells to enter the cell and initiate COVID-19. Since ACE2 is a favorable enzyme, we were interested in finding a molecule capable of binding spike S1, but not ACE2, and inhibiting the interaction between spike S1 and ACE2. Holy basil (Tulsi) has a long history as a medicine for different human disorders. Therefore, we screened different components of Tulsi leaf and found that eugenol, but not other major components (e.g. ursolic acid, oleanolic acid and β-caryophylli

Microbial community profiling of fresh basil and pitfalls in taxonomic assignment of enterobacterial pathogenic species based upon 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing.

Application of 16S rRNA (gene) amplicon sequencing on food samples is increasingly applied for assessing microbial diversity but may as unintended advantage also enable simultaneous detection of any human pathogens without a priori definition. In the present study high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS) of the V1-V2-V3 regions of the 16S rRNA gene was applied to identify the bacteria present on fresh basil leaves. However, results were strongly impacted by variations in the bioinformatics analysis pipelines (MEGAN, SILVAngs, QIIME and MG-RAST), including the database choice (Greengene

Effect of Oxidative Phytochemicals on Nicotine-stressed UMNSAH/DF-1 Cell Line.

Nicotine is a parasympathomimetic alkaloid found in the nightshade family of plants (Solanaceae) and is a cholinergic drug. It acts directly by stimulating the nicotinic or muscarinic receptors or indirectly by inhibiting cholinesterase, promoting acetylcholine release, or by other mechanisms. 3% of tobacco or one cigarette yields 1 mg of nicotine. As nicotine enters the body, it disturbs the healthy functioning of the body. In this study, we isolated UMNSAH/DF-1 cell line from Gallus gallus. For this, 9 ± 2 day old chicken embryo was taken. This was followed by the extraction of nicotine (1 m

Modulation of Ca2+ signaling by tulsi (holy basil) extract in renal epithelial wound-healing model.

UNLABELLED: The internalization and accumulation of calcium crystals (crystallopathy) trigger the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which drive localized tubular injury and subsequently dysregulate Ca²⁺ signaling, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Here, we investigated the protective mechanism of aqueous Ocimum sanctum (Krishna Tulsi) leaf extract, often used to prepare as Tulsi Chai (TC), for its effects on cell survival, wound healing, and Ca²⁺ signaling in human kidney-2 (HK-2) cells. We induced oxidative stress with hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and simulated CKD-like inju
