Outcome of orthodontic treatment in subjects with periodontal disease. Part III: a CBCT study of external apical root resorption.

BACKGROUND: No evidence is present on the risk for external apical root resorption (EARR) during orthodontic treatment (OT) of adult patients with periodontal disease. AIM: To examine EARR after OT in subjects with periodontal disease and to analyse how intrusion and change in inclination of the most proclined maxillary incisors influence EARR. METHODS: The study included 50 patients with periodontal disease. Sub-gingival debridement by ultrasonic instrumentation supplemented with hand instruments was performed by experienced dental hygienist after baseline examination for all patients. For

Esthetic Correction of Orthodontically Transposed Teeth with Veneers and Laser Periodontal Modification.

Missing teeth in the esthetic zone, whether congenital or as a result of other factors, present difficult choices in clinical management. The missing teeth can be replaced by surgical or restorative intervention but are often treated orthodontically. These repositioned teeth often lead to an unaesthetic result because of differences in morphology, color, and particularly in gingival architecture. This article describes the use of multiple lasers for periodontal modification and feldspathic porcelain veneers to achieve a highly esthetic result.

Combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment in a patient with aggressive periodontitis: a 9-year follow-up report.

A combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment demands a detailed evaluation in both specialties, particularly when the periodontium is reduced. This is especially true for adult patients, but young patients can also suffer from advanced periodontitis. This article describes combined periodontal and orthodontic therapy in a young patient with severe localized and aggressive periodontitis, tooth crown abnormalities, and missing maxillary second premolars. Periodontal treatment was carried out. Once attachment gain and bone stability were confirmed, orthodontic therapy commenced. It lasted 32

Risk factors for gingival invagination: A retrospective study.

AIM: This study aimed to identify the risk factors for gingival invagination during orthodontic treatment after premolar extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 135 patients who had undergone interdental space closure after premolar extraction were collected, and cone beam computed tomography was performed to determine the presence of gingival invagination. The risk factors were examined using mixed-effects models and generalized propensity score weighting (GPSW) to develop a predictive model. RESULTS: Univariate analysis revealed that the extraction site, buccal bone thick

Evaluation of the effect of local administration of PRP vs vitamin D3 on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement and the associated external apical root resorption.

BACKGROUND: Increased orthodontic treatment duration is associated with iatrogenic risks such as root resorption, white spot lesions etc. Recent research using pharmacological agents to accelerate tooth movement has mostly been conducted on animals and there is no reported research conducted on humans comparing the effects of Vitamin D3 and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) in the same subjects using a split mouth technique. OBJECTIVES: To determine and compare effects of local injection of PRP and Vitamin D3 on the rate of tooth movement. Also, to assess association of external apical root resorpti

Effectiveness of the Bidimensional Bracket System in Miniscrew-Supported en Masse Retraction of the Maxillary Anterior Teeth: A Preliminary Clinical Report.

Introduction In adult Class II Division 1 cases treated by orthodontic camouflage, the extraction of the maxillary first premolars is commonly followed by retraction of the anterior segment. Achieving this movement efficiently while maintaining adequate torque control remains a major clinical concern. Materials and methods This preliminary clinical report evaluated the performance of a bidimensional bracket system combined with miniscrew-supported anchorage in seven adult patients treated with the extraction of the maxillary first premolars followed by en masse retraction of the upper anterior

To open or to close space--that is the missing lateral incisor question.

Developmentally absent permanent maxillary lateral incisors may be associated with several problems. The decision whether to open or to close the space should involve the patient/parent, orthodontist and restorative dentist. To optimize function and aesthetics, space should be opened using fixed appliances to accommodate an appropriate prosthesis. Implant-retained crowns offer several advantages, although adhesive bridges are more appropriate in certain circumstances. Removable partial dentures may be necessary in some instances. Where space opening is not feasible, practical or desirable, any

[Limiting factors in the class III camouflage treatment: a potential protocol].

The Class III skeletal malocclusion has been traditionally treated with a combined approach of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery or with a strategy of orthodontic camouflage. Some severe cases can be identified as ideal candidates for a surgical treatment whereas some others can be handled with orthodontics alone, with a reasonable expectation of an acceptable result. However, the problem remains for the borderline patient. In fact, limited information is available in the literature regarding the identification of the factors that can help in establishing the limits for one treatment modal

Agenesis of the upper lateral incisors: Study of an orthodontic population and clinical illustration.

In his daily practice, the orthodontist is regularly asked to treat patients with one or more missing teeth. Considering their functional and esthetic specificities, and the relatively high frequency of agenesia, our interest was to focus on the permanent lateral upper incisors. Our study, based on an orthodontic population including 1000 patients, shows that about 7.8% of these patients present agenesis of at least one permanent tooth (out of which 3.6% are agenesis of the upper lateral incisor). Treatment options for these cases are multiple with several decisional factors to consider: the s
