Predictors of poor dental arch relationship in young children with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

The aim of this cross-sectional outcome study using retrospective data capture of treatment histories was to examine the characteristics of young children with unilateral cleft lip and palate who had poor dental arch relationship (i.e., Goslon 5). The study sample comprised 120 children born with nonsyndromic complete unilateral cleft lip and palate between 1995 and 2003, and were aged between 5.0 and 7.0 years (mean age, 5.1 years) at the time of data collection. The dental arch relationship was assessed using the Goslon yardstick from intraoral dental photographs. An independent investigator

Two interceptive approaches to palatally displaced canines: a prospective longitudinal study.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of two interceptive approaches to palatally displaced canines (PDCs), ie, extraction of the deciduous canines alone and in association with the use of a cervical pull headgear. The prospective longitudinal design of the investigation included 46 subjects with PDC (62 maxillary canines) who were randomly assigned to one of three groups (1) a group that underwent the extraction of the deciduous canine only, (2) a group that received in addition the use of a cervical pull headgear, and (3) an untreated control group. Panoramic radiographs were evaluated at i

Comparative Evaluation of the Relationship Between Airway Inadequacy, Head Posture, and Craniofacial Morphology in Mouth-Breathing and Nasal-Breathing Patients: A Cephalometric Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The process of respiration is the primary factor of the posture of the jaws and tongue. Thus, a changed respiratory form like mouth breathing can change the posture of the head, jaw, and tongue. This, in turn, could change the equilibrium of pressure on the jaws and teeth thus affecting jaw growth and teeth positions. The influence of nasorespiratory function on craniofacial growth has stimulated interest and debate for more than a century. Mouth breathing is the reason for numerous orthodontic glitches such as a mouth breather's face evolving aberrantly because of of functional di

The essential work of fracture of thermoplastic orthodontic retainer materials.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether oral cleansing agents affect the essential work of fracture (EWF) and plastic work of fracture (PWF) for two types of orthodontic thermoplastic retainer materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Polyethylene-terephthalate-glycol (PETG; Tru-Tain Splint) and polypropylene/ethylene-propylene rubber (PP-EPR) blend (Essix-C+) sheets were compared. For each material, six sets of 25 sheets were thermoformed into double-edge-notched-tension specimens; subsets of five specimens were formed with internotch distances (L) equal to 6, 8, 10, 12, or 14 mm, respectively. Sets were

Apical root resorption in orthodontically treated adults.

This study analyzed the relationship in orthodontically treated adults between upper central incisor displacement measured on lateral cephalograms and apical root resorption measured on anterior periapical x-ray films. A multiple linear regression examined incisor displacements in four directions (retraction, advancement, intrusion, and extrusion) as independent variables, attempting to account for observed differences in the dependent variable, resorption. Mean apical resorption was 1.36 mm (sd +/- 1.46, n = 73). Mean horizontal displacement of the apex was -0.83 mm (sd +/- 1.74, n = 67); mea

Minor physical anomalies including palatal rugae pattern and palatal dimensions in children with sickle cell disease: A cross-sectional analytical study.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common hereditary hemoglobinopathy, which delays growth leading to an altered skeleton and craniofacial pattern. Palatal rugae patterning has been considered the regulator of the development of the palate. The purpose of the research work was to study the morphology of the palate, rugae pattern, and its dimensions in SCD children and compare them with healthy normal children, and to evaluate its role as minor physical anomalies (MPAs). METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study was designed as per STROBE guidelines. The sample comprised 50

Dental sequellae of alveolar clefts: utility of endosseous implants. Part I: therapeutic protocols.

The aim of this publication is to offer teams specializing in the primary and secondary treatment of labio-alveolar-palatal clefts a prosthetic evaluation for more rational management of the dental sequellae of clefts for patients who, when they reach adulthood, often wish to improve their facial esthetics, in which the dental element plays a significant part. The reorganization and restoration of the upper anterior teeth, and their esthetic integration with respect to the face and lips, would then be less of a problem for plastic surgeons or orthodontists. In this respect, the installation in

Early Orthodontic and Orthopedic Interventions for Anterior Open Bite in the Mixed Dentition: A Systematic Review.

Anterior open bite (AOB) is a complex malocclusion prevalent in the mixed dentition, with multifactorial etiology involving skeletal, dental, and habitual components. Early intervention during this developmental stage is advocated to correct the malocclusion and guide growth, but the most effective and stable approaches remain debated. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy of early orthodontic and orthopedic interventions for correcting AOB in the mixed dentition. A systematic search was conducted across four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ClinicalTria

Does Temporomandibular Joint Disc Displacement Influence Joint Space Dimensions, and Does Sex Play a Role?

BACKGROUND: Joint space dimensions influence maxillomandibular relationships by altering condylar position. Although disc displacement (DD) is the most common temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, its effect on joint space dimensions and associated morphology remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether DD status and sex are associated with differences in joint space dimensions and related bony morphology, based on combined TMJ magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography (CT) evaluations. STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, SAMPLE: This retrospective cross-sectional study incl

Respiratory sleep disorders in children and role of the paediatric dentist.

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in children are relatively frequent, with a prevalence of 27% and 5.7%, respectively as reported by different studies. The clinical consequences of the above are sleeping disturbances, daytime somnolence and cognitive and behavioural disorders, with consequent poor school performance. Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea have serious social implications given their correlations with adenotonsillar hypertrophy, allergies of the upper airways, obesity and dentoskeletal anomalies. The interceptive dental and orthodontic treatment, possibly coupled with t

Interventions for promoting the eruption of palatally displaced permanent canine teeth, without the need for surgical exposure, in children aged 9 to 14 years.

BACKGROUND: A permanent upper (maxillary) canine tooth that grows into the roof of the mouth and frequently does not appear (erupt) is called a palatally displaced canine (PDC). The reported prevalence of PDC in the population varies between 1% and 3%. Management of the unerupted PDC can be lengthy, involving surgery to uncover the tooth and prolonged orthodontic (brace) treatment to straighten it; therefore, various procedures have been suggested to encourage a PDC to erupt without the need for surgical intervention. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of any in

A longitudinal three-dimensional evaluation of the growth pattern in hemifacial microsomia treated by mandibular distraction osteogenesis: a preliminary report.

This study analyzed in three dimensions the longitudinal growth pattern of young patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM) before and after mandibular distraction osteogenesis (DO). Six individuals with HFM (five boys and one girl; age at distraction, 12.5 +/- 2.4 years) were treated with similar procedures (surgery, type and direction of distraction, no functional orthodontic treatment before and after DO). Two individuals who did not undergo DO until late in their growth were used to compare growth patterns. In addition, one individual besides the six previously chosen sample in whom no DO w

Orthodontic treatment for crowded teeth in children.

BACKGROUND: Crowded teeth develop when there is not enough space in the jaws into which the teeth can erupt. Crowding can affect baby teeth (deciduous dentititon), adult teeth (permanent dentition), or both, and is a common reason for referral to an orthodontist. Crowded teeth can affect a child's self-esteem and quality of life. Early loss of baby teeth as a result of tooth decay or trauma, can lead to crowded permanent teeth. Crowding tends to increase with age, especially in the lower jaw. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of orthodontic intervention for preventing or correcting crowded te

The effectiveness of orofacial myofunctional therapy in improving dental occlusion.

The most significant findings of this study definitively establish the beneficial effects of orofacial myofunctional therapy on improving dental occlusion, decreasing dental open bite, and decreasing dental overjet. The results reported are actually quite conservative because of the method of measuring. Measuring and recording every tooth unquestionably dilutes the results which would have been achieved if only the anterior teeth had been used in the calculations. Some may question the small millimeter change as being significant. The change is reflective of the overall relative value change o
