Effect of temporal relationship between respiration and body motion on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the effect controlling the phase of respiration on the development of nausea provoked by periodic motion at 0.2 Hz which is maximal for provocation of motion sickness. METHODS: Subjects were exposed to 60 degrees peak-peak, pitch backwards from upright motion while viewing a video of the environment with 180 degrees phase delay. Motion duration was a maximum of 30 min and frequency was set to match individuals' spontaneous respiration. Conditions were: A, spontaneous breathing; B, inspiration cued to begin when head-down; C, inspiration cued to begin when u

An acoustically evoked short latency negative response in profound hearing loss infants.

OBJECTIVE: A large negative deflection with a 3-4 ms latency within the auditory brainstem response has been reported in some profound hearing loss ears under intense stimuli in adult subjects. The wave has been termed the N3 potential or acoustically evoked short latency negative response and it is assumed to be a vestibular-evoked potential. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials and the acoustically evoked short latency negative response in infants with a functionless cochlea and normal or impaired semicircular

Origin of orientation-dependent asymmetries in vestibulo-ocular reflexes evoked by caloric stimulation.

A caloric stimulus evokes primarily a horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) when subjects are in a supine or prone orientation with the horizontal semicircular canal plane oriented vertically. In both monkeys and humans, the magnitude of VOR eye movements is greater in the supine than in the prone orientation, indicating that some factor or factors, other than the conventionally accepted convective stimulation of the horizontal canals, contributes to the generation of the VOR. We used long-duration caloric irrigations and mathematical models of canal-otolith interactions to investigate fact

Deviation of the subjective vertical in long-standing unilateral vestibular loss.

We evaluated changes in the subjectively perceived gravitational vertical as an index of imbalance in the function of the right and left otolith organs. In addition to normal subjects (n = 25), we measured patients with a longstanding (mean 4.5 year +/- 3.2 SD; range 0.5-11.5 years) unilateral vestibular loss after surgery for acoustic neuroma (n = 32), patients with partial unilateral vestibular loss (n = 7) and patients with bilateral vestibular hyporeflexia (n = 8). Normal subjects could accurately align a vertical luminous bar to the gravitational vertical in an otherwise completely dark r

no privacy, a Xenopus tropicalis mutant, is a model of human Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome and allows visualization of internal organogenesis during tadpole development.

We describe a novel recessive and nonlethal pigmentation mutant in Xenopus tropicalis. The mutant phenotype can be initially observed in tadpoles after stage 39/40, when mutant embryos display markedly reduced pigmentation in the retina and the trunk. By tadpole stage 50 almost all pigmented melanophores have disappeared. Most interestingly, those embryos fail entirely to make pigmented iridophores. The combined reduction/absence of both pigmented iridophores and melanophores renders these embryos virtually transparent, permitting one to easily observe both the developing internal organs and n

Impact of endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery on saccule and lateral semicircular canal function.

Endolymphatic mastoid shunt surgery (EMSS) is widely performed in patients with medically intractable Meniere's disease. Although many patients report an improvement of symptoms after surgery, the mechanisms which are responsible for the relief of complaints are not known. To date, only few studies exist which studied the influence of EMSS on vestibular function. The present study examines the effect of EMSS on saccule function by measuring vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and the effect on lateral semicircular canal function by sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (SHA) testing. No changes i

Stance performance under different sensorimotor conditions in patients with post-traumatic otolith disorders.

Dynamic posturography with the Equitest system is helpful to screen patients for balance deficits, but diagnostic specificity, for otolith disorders is unknown until now. It was therefore the aim of our present paper to examine patients with a well-defined otolith disorder on the Equitest at different test conditions while simultaneously recording trunk sway by means of the Sway Star system. A total of 22 patients with different types of otolith disorders were included in this study. All test results of the patients were matched with respect to age and gender to controls without history of ENT

[Time-dependent vestibular function loss of semicircular canals and otolith organs in Menière's disease].

INTRODUCTION: Since Dohlmann's investigations the extremely variable interindividual natural course of Menière's disease has been documented. The description of sub-entities of Menière's disease shows, the localisation of dysfunction within the labyrinth is of considerable importance. The selective investigation of crista and macula sensor organs and its time-dependent progression even provides information for the disease's staging. METHODS: In the retrospective trial presented here, 126 patients suffering from vertigo were tested by the methods described above. 10 of these patients who showe

Retinoic acid degradation shapes zonal development of vestibular organs and sensitivity to transient linear accelerations.

Each vestibular sensory epithelium in the inner ear is divided morphologically and physiologically into two zones, called the striola and extrastriola in otolith organ maculae, and the central and peripheral zones in semicircular canal cristae. We found that formation of striolar/central zones during embryogenesis requires Cytochrome P450 26b1 (Cyp26b1)-mediated degradation of retinoic acid (RA). In Cyp26b1 conditional knockout mice, formation of striolar/central zones is compromised, such that they resemble extrastriolar/peripheral zones in multiple features. Mutants have deficient vestibular

Chronic Electrical Stimulation of the Otolith Organ: Preliminary Results in Humans with Bilateral Vestibulopathy and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral vestibulopathy is an important cause of imbalance that is misdiagnosed. The clinical management of patients with bilateral vestibular loss remains difficult as there is no clear evidence for an effective treatment. In this paper, we try to analyze the effect of chronic electrical stimulation and adaptation to electrical stimulation of the vestibular system in humans when stimulating the otolith organ with a constant pulse train to mitigate imbalance due to bilateral vestibular dysfunction (BVD). METHODS: We included 2 patients in our study with BVD according to Criteri

Altered processing of otolithic information in isolated lateral medullary infarction.

Ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) evaluate the function of otolithic pathways in central as well as peripheral vestibular disorders. This study aimed to determine the associations and dissociations of otolithic dysfunction in lateral medullary infarction (LMI), the most well-known disorder of central vestibulopathy. At the Dizziness Clinic of a referral-based University Hospital, 45 patients with isolated LMI (28 men, mean age = 55.6 ± 12.5) had evaluation of the ocular tilt reaction (OTR), tilt of the subjective visual vertical (SVV), and ocular and cervical VE

Risk factors for the recurrence of post-semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo after canalith repositioning.

This retrospective study was conducted to determine the relationship between variable factors and the recurrence rate of post-semicircular canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (PSC-BPPV) after canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). Patients with PSC-BPPV were diagnosed by history and the presence of a positive Dix-Hallpike maneuver between 2008 and 2010. In total, 243 patients (47 males and 196 females, average age = 57.5 -years) treated with Epley's maneuver or canalith repositioning procedure (CRP) were included in the study. The demographic factors studied were age, sex, sleep disord

Otoconial agenesis in tilted mutant mice.

The sense of balance is one of the phylogenetically oldest sensory systems. The vestibular organs, consisting of sensory hair cells and an overlying extracellular membrane, have been conserved throughout vertebrate evolution. To better understand mechanisms regulating vestibular development and mechanisms of vestibular pathophysiology, we have analyzed the mouse mutant, tilted (tlt), which has dysfunction of the gravity receptors. The tilted mouse arose spontaneously and has not been previously analyzed for a developmental or physiological deficit. Here we demonstrate that the tilted mouse, li

Ocular torsion induced by static and dynamic visual stimulation and static whole body roll.

By means of real-time infra-red video-oculography we studied eye torsion in 12 normal healthy subjects. Ocular torsion was induced by visual stimulation or static whole body roll with and without visual orientation ("head-fixed" or "earth-fixed"). Visual stimulation was achieved by a horizontal grating that oscillated sinusoidally in a frontal plane. The oscillation frequency varied from 0 to 0.6 Hz while amplitude varied from 6 degrees to 33 degrees. Visual orientation during whole body roll was established by mounting a 32 lx illuminated horizontal grating either on a tilting device (head-fi

Effects of rectilinear acceleration, caloric and optokinetic stimulation of human subjects in the Spacelab D-1 mission.

A set of vestibular experiments was performed during the course of the German Spacelab D-1 mission from 30 October to 6 November 1985 by a consortium of experimenters from various european countries. Similar to the Spacelab SL-1 mission all of the scientific crew members were theoretically and practically trained for the experiments. Baseline measurements for all tests were collected 113, 86, 44, 30 and 18 days prior to the mission and compared with data taken inflight, on the landing day and the consecutive 7 to 14 days. The hardware comprised mainly a motordriven accelerating platform, the S

Canadian medical experiments on Shuttle flight 41-G.

During the 41-G mission, two payload specialist astronauts took part in six Canadian medical experiments designed to measure how the human nervous system adapts to weightlessness, and how this might contribute to space motion sickness. Similar tests conducted pre-flight provided base-line data, and post-flight experiments examined re-adaptation to the ground. No changes were detected in the vestibulo-ocular reflex during this 8-day mission. Pronounced proprioceptive illusions were experienced, especially immediately post-flight. Tactile acuity was normal in the fingers and toes, but the abilit

An absent WD domain in the autophagy protein ATG16L1 leads to auditory and vestibular dysfunction and otoconial deficits in mice.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the inner ear functions of mice that lack the WD domain (δWD) of autophagy protein ATG16L1. DESIGN: Mice were assessed with vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs), auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and four δWD mice were observed with electron microscopy to assess otolith otoconia loss, and cochlear hair cell loss. STUDY SAMPLE: Seven δWD mice and four control mice. RESULTS: Compared to control mice, VsEP thresholds were elevated, latencies increased and amplitudes decreased in the δWD mice. ABR thresholds were elevated for the 32 kHz tonebursts (but not 8 or 16 kHz)
