Workforce participation by persons with disabilities: the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement, 1994 to 1995.

Using the National Health Interview Survey Disability Supplement of 1994 to 1995, we examined the factors associated with employment among Americans with disabilities. Persons with disabilities who were more educated were more likely to be working. Married men were more likely to work than unmarried men (odds ratio [OR], 1.58). Blacks were less likely to work than whites (OR, 0.56). Persons with disabilities related to cardiovascular disease (OR, 0.23), musculoskeletal disease (OR, 0.37), and respiratory disease (OR, 0.23) were less likely to work than other Americans with disabilities. Association of Huntington's disease and schizophrenia-like psychosis in a Huntington's disease pedigree.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is a dominantly inherited, neurodegenerative disorder due to expansion of a polymorphic trinucleotide repeat in the short arm of chromosome 4. Clinical manifestations consist of a triad of choreic movements, cognitive decline and psychiatric syndromes starting in the fourth to fifth decade. Psychiatric manifestations vary and may precede motor and cognitive changes. Personality changes and depression occur most commonly. Paranoid schizophrenia-like symptoms occur in 6% to 25% of cases. CASE REPORT: We describe a 55 year-old woman with an 8 yearlong histor

Dermatitis artefacta in a patient with paranoid syndrome.

It is well recognized that psychosomatic factors play an important role in many skin diseases. Dermatitis artefacta coexists with quite an extensive number of psychopathologic conditions. In women, it is regarded as a ''cry for help'', especially when the patient is faced with psychosocial stressors. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with long lasting self-inflicted excoriations and ulcerations of the skin located within easy reach of her hands. We discuss the reasons for such behavior and the possibilities of dermatological and general interventions.

A longitudinal study relating P3 amplitude to schizophrenia spectrum disorders and to global personality functioning.

Auditory and visual event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from first-degree relatives (adolescent offspring) of index cases with schizophrenic disorder, affective disorder, or no psychiatric disorder (normal controls) at a mean age of 15 years. Nearly a decade later, these subjects (at a mean age of 25 years) were evaluated for Research Diagnostic Criteria Schizophrenic Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Unspecified Functional Psychosis, and for DSM-III-R Axis II schizophrenia-related traits and disorders including schizotypal, schizoid, and paranoid features. It was hypothesized, bas

[Paraphrenia: the modernity of Emil Kraepelin's thinking].

Paraphrenia is a chronic psychotic disorder similar to paranoid schizophrenia, but with a better-preserved affect and rapport, and a much less personality deterioration. It was at first described by Kraepelin in 1913 as a group of patients who exhibited delusional symptoms typical of dementia praecox, but with minimal disturbances of emotion and volition. After the publication of Mayer-Gross's report in 1921, the view to differentiate paraphrenia from schizophrenia was considered to be unfounded and the term "paraphrenia" was not included in the current DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria

Psychiatric evaluation of patients seeking rhinoplasty.

The number of people requesting cosmetic surgery has been increasing. Both objective and subjective motivational factors are involved. Since the face is the most important physical representative of our emotions and the nose isthe most prominent part of the face, not infrequently subconscious and unconscious personality factors are equated with some real or imaginary anatomical defect of the nose or face. Most commonly inadequacy feelings are involved in individuals with predominantly subjective complaints and are often intimately involved in the indivudual's sexuality and "identity." The nose

Do autistic traits play a role in the bullying of obsessive-compulsive disorder and social phobia sufferers?

BACKGROUND: Social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) share several similarities: both are categorized as anxiety disorders, avoidant personality disorder and depression are common in both, they have a similar age of onset and course, and both disorders respond to treatments with serotonin reuptake inhibitors and cognitive behavioural therapy. However, OCD and social phobia differ in respect to their relation to autism spectrum disorders (ASD; i.e. Asperger's syndrome, autism, pervasive disorder not otherwise specified). Findings that suggest a link between OCD and ASD have no para

Regression in organizational leadership.

The choice of good leaders is a major task for all organizations. Inforamtion regarding the prospective administrator's personality should complement questions regarding his previous experience, his general conceptual skills, his technical knowledge, and the specific skills in the area for which he is being selected. The growing psychoanalytic knowledge about the crucial importance of internal, in contrast to external, object relations, and about the mutual relationships of regression in individuals and in groups, constitutes an important practical tool for the selection of leaders.

[Sensitive character: an almost forgotten personality disorder - illustrated by the case Anton Reiser].

n his famous 1918 book „The sensitive relative delusion” Ernst Kretschmer not only described this specific delusional disorder but also the underlying sensitive personality disorder. Until now, relatively little attention has been paid to this part of his work. The incomplete reception is outlined, followed by a description of the symptoms, psychodynamics and course of sensitive personality disorder. The interpretation of "Anton Reiser: a psychological novel" - the autobiographical work by Karl Philipp Moritz in 1785 – is used as an example since it describes Anton Reiser as a sensitive person

The dyadic effects of subclinical paranoia on relationship satisfaction in roommate relationships and college adjustment.

Subclinical paranoia is associated with negative psychological and general health consequences including poorer social functioning. Despite extensive research on the outcomes of individuals with greater paranoia, the consequences of interacting with someone who is paranoid are less clear. As social functioning involves interactions between individuals, investigating associations between paranoia and relationship outcomes from a dyadic perspective may aid in elucidating the mechanisms underlying social dysfunction in subclinical paranoia. This study examined the trajectory of new roommate relat

Cannibalism in paranoid schizophrenia: a case report.

In ancient times, cannibalism was deemed acceptable for reasons of survival when faced with extreme need or for religious or magic reasons. In today's society, these cases are extremely rare and are generally associated with severe mental illness. We present a case of cannibalism in an individual with schizophrenia. The patient who lacked insight into his illness admitted to committing acts of cannibalism and offered in-depth explanations of the procedures used to prepare the bodies. He made statements on television and to the press and was given the nickname of "the people-eater", an identity
