Letter identification declines with increasing retinal eccentricity at the same rate for normal and dyslexic readers.

It has recently been claimed (Geiger & Lettvin, 1987; Perry, Dember, Warm, & Sacks, 1989) that the acuity/eccentricity function is flatter in dyslexics than in normal subjects, with dyslexics showing better performance in the periphery and worse performance at fixation. In these studies, all target letters were presented to the right of fixation, a procedural flaw inviting subjects to optimize performance by directing attention and/or gaze to the right of the designated fixation point. It is suggested that dyslexic and normal readers may differ in the degree to which they might adopt the optim

On the role of cortical area V4 in the discrimination of hue and pattern in macaque monkeys.

Cortical visual area V4 in macaque monkeys has a large proportion of neurons that are sensitive to the wavelength or to the color of light. We tested its role in hue discrimination by removing it in macaque monkeys trained to discriminate small differences in hue. Hue discrimination thresholds were permanently elevated in 4 macaque monkeys in which V4 was removed bilaterally. In contrast, there was no impairment in achromatic intensity thresholds tested in an identical manner. However, the discrimination of pattern and orientation was also conspicuously impaired, indicating that area V4 is not

Age-of-acquisition affects object recognition and compound word identification: Evidence from visual duration thresholds and progressive demasking.

Items acquired during childhood are processed more quickly and accurately than those acquired during adulthood, a phenomenon known as the age of acquisition (AoA) effect. One explanation is that the AoA effect results from the arbitrary nature of the input-output mapping during the development of a lexical-semantic representation. However, previous behavioural studies have not directly compared the AoA effects in pictures and word processing. To investigate this, 48 British English students completed a visual duration threshold task and four variations of progressive demasking experiments. In

Preserving Harmonic Structure in FPVS-Oddball: A Two-Dimensional Cluster-Based Permutation Approach.

The fast periodic visual stimulation oddball paradigm (FPVS-oddball), which combines multi-input frequency tagging with an oddball design, is a powerful electroencephalography (EEG) technique for probing cognitive function. Traditionally, FPVS-oddball analysis collapses steady-state responses across harmonics into composite measures, which improves response detection but discards valuable information about the harmonic composition of responses. Here, we apply a two-dimensional (sensor × harmonic) permutation test, incorporating a novel free harmonic clustering procedure that allows clustering

Structured interconnectivity optimizes neural geometry for balancing specificity and generalization in object recognition.

Balancing specificity and generalization in object recognition is a significant challenge for biological and artificial visual systems. Here, we investigated how the brain addresses this challenge by examining the relationship between interconnectivity of neural networks, dimensionality of neural space, and levels of abstraction in representing objects, employing combined neurophysiological data from macaques and computational modeling. We found that higher interconnectivity within area TEa of macaques' inferior temporal (IT) cortex was associated with lower dimensionality and greater generali

Different neural representations for detection of symmetry in dot-patterns and in faces: A state-dependent TMS study.

The occipital face area (OFA) has been shown to code the presence of symmetry in faces and in vertically symmetric dot patterns. However, it is not clear whether symmetry processing of face and non-face stimuli involve overlapping neural mechanisms in OFA. This was assessed using state-dependent TMS by employing a priming paradigm. Specifically, we examined whether prior presentation of low-level symmetry affects the impact of TMS on discrimination of symmetry in subsequently presented faces - indicating that the same neural mechanisms encode symmetry in both face and non-face stimuli. Changes in face and face pareidolia processing in patients with migraine: an ERP study.

Migraine is a multifactorial brain disorder characterized by recurrent disabling headache attacks. One of the possible mechanisms in the pathogenesis of migraine may be a decrease in inhibitory cortical stimuli in the primary visual cortex attributable to cortical hyperexcitability. The aim of this study was to investigate the neural correlates underlying face and face pareidolia processing in terms of the event-related potential (ERP) components, N170, vertex positive potential (VPP), and N250, in patients with migraine. In total, 40 patients with migraine without aura, 23 patients with migra

Neural correlates of temporal integration in face recognition: an fMRI study.

Integration of temporally separated visual inputs is crucial for perception of a unified representation. Here, we show that regions involved in configural processing of faces contribute to temporal integration occurring within a limited time-window using a multivariate analysis (partial least squares, PLS) exploring the relation between brain activity and recognition performance. During fMRI, top and bottom parts of a famous face were presented sequentially with a varying interval (0, 200, or 800 ms) or were misaligned. The 800 ms condition activated several regions implicated in face processi

Getting to know you: the acquisition of new face representations in autism spectrum conditions.

Social difficulties form a part of the canonical description of autism spectrum conditions (ASC), and the development of familiarity with new faces is a key ability required to navigate the social world. Here, we investigated the acquisition of new face representations in ASC by analysing the N170 and N250 event-related potential components induced by a previously unfamiliar face that was embedded in a series of other unfamiliar faces. We found that participants with ASC developed a smaller N250 component to the target face, indicating that the development of new face representations is impair

The Enigmatic temporal pole: a review of findings on social and emotional processing.

The function of the anterior-most portion of the temporal lobes, the temporal pole, is not well understood. Anatomists have long considered it part of an extended limbic system based on its location posterior to the orbital frontal cortex and lateral to the amygdala, along with its tight connectivity to limbic and paralimbic regions. Here we review the literature in both non-human primates and humans to assess the temporal pole's putative role in social and emotional processing. Reviewed findings indicate that it has some role in both social and emotional processes, including face recognition

Visual self-face and self-body recognition in a left-brain-damaged prosopagnosic patient.

The present case study describes the patient N.G., who reported prosopagnosia along with difficulty in recognising herself in the mirror following a left-sided temporo-occipital hemispheric stroke. The neuropsychological and experimental investigation revealed only a mild form of apperceptive prosopagnosia, without visual agnosia, primarily caused by an impaired visual processing of face-parts and body parts but not of full faces. Emotional expressions did not modulate her face processing. On the other hand, N.G. showed a marked impairment of visual self-recognition, as assessed with visual ma

Category-based attention facilitates the recognition of actions.

Action recognition relies on efficiently prioritizing relevant sources of information. This study examined the degree to which category-based attention facilitates the identification of basic action categories (climb, jump, run, walk) depicted as static avatar images (Exp. 1, 2) and naturalistic images (Exp. 3, 4). Participants received prior information about the target action category through a word cue (Exp. 1, 2, 4) or an avatar image cue (Exp. 3), with a 3:1 ratio of valid to invalid trials. Performance was assessed in terms of accuracy, reaction time (RT), and sensitivity (d-prime). Exp.

Can the visual system explicitly represent distributions of emotional expressions?

The visual system can quickly extract statistical properties of multiple objects (ensembles). Observers can explicitly access and report the distribution of low-level features, such as color. Here, we investigate whether explicit access extends to the distributions of high-level features (e.g., emotional expressions of a group of faces). In Experiment 1, we presented observers with ensembles that had a Gaussian, uniform, or bimodal distribution of emotional expressions (or colors as a low-level baseline condition). The task was to report the frequency of a randomly chosen feature value. Observ

Behavioral relevance of category selectivity revealed by human ECoG data.

Object recognition is a crucial brain function that involves a complex interplay between various brain regions. However, the behavioral relevance of functional interactions between these regions remains largely unexplored. In this study, we examined the functional interactions between different brain regions during object recognition using intracranial electrocorticography (ECoG) recordings in subjects diagnosed with pharmacologically intractable epilepsy. We computed the phase locking value (PLV) between different brain areas and its category selectivity, and assessed its behavioral relevance

Pattern separation during encoding and Subsequent Memory Effect.

Memory retrieval has been extensively studied in relation to the encoding processes that precede access to stored information. Event related potentials (ERP) research has compared brain potentials elicited during the study phase of successful and unsuccessful retrieval, finding greater activation for the subsequent retrieval information. In this work we were interested in exploring the neural markers associated to subsequent recognition when similar memories are subsequently encoded. We used a Subsequent Memory paradigm in which we manipulated the number of similar items within a category (2 o

The locus of recognition memory signals in human cortex depends on the complexity of the memory representations.

According to a "Swiss Army Knife" model of the brain, cognitive functions such as episodic memory and face perception map onto distinct neural substrates. In contrast, representational accounts propose that each brain region is best explained not by which specialized function it performs, but by the type of information it represents with its neural firing. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we asked whether the neural signals supporting recognition memory fall mandatorily within the medial temporal lobes (MTL), traditionally thought the seat of declarative memory, or whether the

"Looking at nothing": An implicit ocular motor index of face recognition in developmental prosopagnosia.

Subjects often look towards to previous location of a stimulus related to a task even when that stimulus is no longer visible. In this study we asked whether this effect would be preserved or reduced in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia. Participants learned faces presented in video-clips and then saw a brief montage of four faces, which was replaced by a screen with empty boxes, at which time they indicated whether the learned face had been present in the montage. Control subjects were more likely to look at the blank location where the learned face had appeared, on both hit and miss

Invariant template matching in systems with spatiotemporal coding: A matter of instability.

We consider the design principles of algorithms that match templates to images subject to spatiotemporal encoding. Both templates and images are encoded as temporal sequences of samplings from spatial patterns. Matching is required to be tolerant to various combinations of image perturbations. These include ones that can be modeled as parameterized uncertainties such as image blur, luminance, and, as special cases, invariant transformation groups such as translation and rotations, as well as unmodeled uncertainties (noise). For a system to deal with such perturbations in an efficient way, they

Recurrent connections facilitate occluded object recognition by explaining-away.

Despite the ubiquity of recurrent connections in the brain, their role in visual processing is less understood than that of feedforward connections. Occluded object recognition, an important cognitive capacity, is thought to rely on recurrent processing of visual information, but it remains unclear whether and how recurrent processing improves recognition of occluded objects. Using convolutional models of the visual system, we demonstrate how a distinct form of computation arises in recurrent-but not feedforward-networks that leverages information about the occluder to "explain-away" the occlu
