Psychological Predictors of Mental Health Difficulties After Pediatric Concussion.

Children often experience mental health difficulties after a concussion. Yet, the extent to which a concussion precipitates or exacerbates mental health difficulties remains unclear. This study aimed to examine psychological predictors of mental health difficulties after pediatric concussion. Children (5 to <18 years of age, M = 11.7, SD = 3.3) with concussion were recruited in a single-site longitudinal prospective cohort study conducted at a tertiary children's hospital (n = 115, 73.9% male). The primary outcomes included internalizing (anxious, depressed, withdrawn behaviors), externalizing

Factors perpetuating functional cognitive symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Self-reported memory difficulties (forgetting familiar names, misplacing objects) often persist long after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), despite normal neuropsychological test performance. This clinical presentation may be a manifestation of a functional cognitive disorder (FCD). Several mechanisms underlying FCD have been proposed, including metacognitive impairment, memory perfectionism, and misdirected attention, as well as depression or anxiety-related explanations. This study aims to explore these candidate perpetuating factors in mTBI, to advance our understanding o

"Not just right" experiences account for unique variance in eating pathology.

"Not just right" experiences (NJREs) are uncomfortable sensations of incompleteness linked to obsessive-compulsive disorder; however, NJREs may be transdiagnostic and play a role in eating pathology. The current study examined relations between NJREs and eating pathology in undergraduate students. Participants (n = 248) completed self-report and behavioral assessments. Controlling for obsessive-compulsive symptoms, negative affect, and perfectionism, NJRE frequency was associated with greater drive for thinness, body dissatisfaction, and bulimic symptoms. Discomfort in response to a visual in

Psychometric Evaluation of the Eating Disorder-15 (ED-15): Factor Structure, Measurement Invariance, and Eating Disorder Caseness in Treatment Seekers.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the factor structure, measurement invariance, and discriminative ability of the Eating Disorder-15 (ED-15) questionnaire in a large transdiagnostic clinical population of treatment-seeking adults. METHOD: The sample consisted of 2015 participants aged 17-79 (Mage = 30.73 years; 77.0% women; 71.1% in Australia) seeking mental health treatment across different settings of routine clinical practice. After initial completion of the ED-15, subsamples completed additional measures within ±365 days of the initial ED-15 and/or repeated the ED-15 at least 7 days later.

Patients' perceptions matter: Risk communication and psychosocial factors in orthodontics.

INTRODUCTION: Effective risk communication is essential for achieving patient-centered oral health care, but the limited understanding of patients' subjective perceptions of orthodontic-related risks hinders this process. This study aimed to investigate adults' awareness, concerns, and risk-avoidance behaviors about long-term orthodontic risks, exploring their relationship with psychosocial factors. METHODS: We included 498 adult patients (mean age, 27.3 ± 6.8 years; women, 75.5%) during their initial visits to the orthodontic department at a hospital in Chengdu, China. Participants' understa

Duration of insomnia and success expectancy predict treatment outcome of iCBT for insomnia.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying prognostic factors of treatment outcome may assist in customizing an intervention to a patient's needs. Hence, we conducted a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial to investigate the effectiveness of an internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-I) to find patient characteristics that may predict the change of insomnia severity after treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this exploratory analysis involving 94 chronic insomnia patients, we examined the predictive value of several self-reported measures, medical history, and s

Eating psychopathology in ballet dancers: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether ballet dancers have higher eating psychopathology mean scores than the general population. METHODS: Meta-analysis of cross-sectional observational studies comparing the scores of one or more of the validated eating psychopathological scales between ballet dancers and any control groups. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included in the metanalysis. Ballet dancers had a significantly higher EAT score (12 studies retrieved, SMD 0.82 [95% CI 0.44-1.19], p < 0.00001, I2 = 84)]; subgroup analysis suggested a possible role of control subjects' choice in explaining heterogen

Research Review: What we have learned about the causes of eating disorders - a synthesis of sociocultural, psychological, and biological research.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are severe psychiatric disorders with a complex etiology involving transactions among sociocultural, psychological, and biological influences. Most research and reviews, however, focus on only one level of analysis. To address this gap, we provide a qualitative review and summary using an integrative biopsychosocial approach. METHODS: We selected variables for which there were available data using integrative methodologies (e.g., twin studies, gene-environment interactions) and/or data at the biological and behavioral level (e.g., neuroimaging). Factors that met t

Implicit self-esteem in bulimia nervosa.

Implicit and explicit self-esteem were compared in a group of female participants with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder (n=20) and a healthy control group (n=20). Lower explicit and a less positive implicit self-esteem bias in the clinical group was predicted. Participants completed a self-esteem implicit association test and two explicit self-esteem measures. The eating disordered group had lower explicit self-esteem, but a more positive implicit self-esteem bias than controls. The results are discussed in relation to the idea that discrepancies between implicit and explicit self-este

Commitment to treatment goals in prediction of group cognitive-behavioral therapy treatment outcome for women with bulimia nervosa.

The purpose of this study was to investigate potential client variables that predict favorable response to group cognitive-behavioral therapy in a sample of women (N = 143) seeking treatment for bulimia nervosa. Similar to findings of previous studies, bulimic symptom remission at end of treatment was predicted by baseline degree of bulimic symptom severity but not by depressive symptomatology or perfectionism. After these variables were controlled for, both pretreatment ratings of desire to discontinue bulimic behaviors and expected success significantly added to prediction of treatment outco

Relationship Between Adherence to Remote Monitoring and Patient Characteristics: Observational Study in Women With Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) is associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality in mothers, fetuses, and newborns. New technologies, such as remote monitoring (RM), were introduced in 2015 into the care of patients at risk of PIH in Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg (Genk, Belgium) to improve both maternal and neonatal outcomes. In developing new strategies for obstetric care in pregnant women, including RM, it is important to understand the psychosocial characteristics associated with adherence to RM to optimize care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the role

SADIE: a longitudinal Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms in Italian university students - a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: University students experience escalating academic, social and financial stress, resulting in high prevalence of anxiety (18%-40%), depression (12-35%) and burnout (20-30%). The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these issues, but most studies report symptom remission post-lockdown, highlighting the need for long-term prospective data on symptom trajectories and risk factors. The Survey on Anxiety, Depression, Internalising and Externalising symptoms (SADIE) study aims to (1) estimate the prevalence and incidence of anxiety, depression, burnout and suicidal ideation in Italian univers

Taxing working memory during laparoscopic training: reducing the impact of perfectionistic concerns on skill learning.

BACKGROUND: Perfectionistic concerns are common among surgeons and have been linked to reduced learning gains in the acquisition of basic instrument-handling skills for minimally invasive surgery (MIS). These concerns often trigger rumination, which distracts attention from the task at hand during practice and interferes with effective skill acquisition. According to working-memory models, occupying task-irrelevant capacity with a neutral secondary task may leave fewer resources available for rumination, thereby reducing negative self-focus. This study investigated whether adding a secondary w

Twice Exceptional in Medicine: A Case Series of Neurodivergent Physicians.

The term twice-exceptional (2e) describes individuals who combine high intellectual potential with neurodevelopmental or psychiatric conditions that may impair performance in traditional environments. While this concept has been increasingly recognized in education, its relevance to medical training and practice has received little attention. This case series presents five physicians across different stages of training who exemplify twice-exceptionality, highlighting both their cognitive strengths and the barriers they faced in clinical environments. The first case involves a surgical resident

Obsessive-Compulsive Symptom Dimensions and Their Relationships with Obsessive Beliefs: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis.

Dysfunctional beliefs are central in the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as well as its treatment. Yet, research suggests that not all dysfunctional beliefs are equally important for each of the symptom dimensions of OCD. However, results are inconsistent in that studies contradict each other regarding the associations between specific symptom dimensions and belief domains. The aim of the present study was to clarify which belief domain is specifically associated with which OCD symptom dimension. Results could help to tailor treatments more specifically to th

Why some obese people become depressed whilst others do not: exploring links between cognitive reactivity, depression and obesity.

Obesity and depression are two major public health concerns, particularly when they co-occur. To date, mechanisms underlying this association have not been established and it is unclear why some obese people become depressed whilst others do not. However, considering the strong association between depression and cognitive reactivity (CR), the present study explores possible associations between obesity, depression and CR in light of the scarce and conflicting nature of past literature. 254 participants were included for measures of depression, CR and obesity. Multivariate analyses of covarianc

Perplexities of treatment resistance in eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Treatment resistance is an omnipresent frustration in eating disorders. Attempts to identify the features of this resistance and subsequently develop novel treatments have had modest effects. This selective review examines treatment resistant features expressed in core eating disorder psychopathology, comorbidities and biological features. Novel treatments addressing resistance are discussed. DESCRIPTION: The core eating disorder psychopathology of anorexia nervosa becomes a coping mechanism likely via vulnerable neurobiological features and conditioned learning to deal with life
