Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative infection caused by Actinomyces israelii, an anaerobic bacterium that is part of the normal oral flora. A 47-year-old woman presented to the clinic with dyspnea and sore throat. Computed tomography(CT) revealed thickening of the proximal tracheal lumen and airway narrowing. Pathological examination of biopsy specimens obtained by rigid bronchoscopy revealed periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)(+) bacterial colonization with filamentous bacilli, consistent with Actinomyces. This report describes an uncommon presentation of tracheal actinomycosis in which tracheal d

Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a prevalent disease with high morbidity and mortality. Numerous complications contribute to brain injury and defy the clinical practitioner on diagnosis and management. Valproate-associated hyperammonemic encephalopathy is a rare, underdiagnosed, serious and important entity to consider. We present a case of a patient with subarachnoid hemorrhage who received anticonvulsant prophylaxis with valproate and developed neuroworsening associated with high levels of ammoniemia and periodic discharge electroencephalographic patterns without other identifiable causes. A 58-year-old Danish male was admitted to hospital with acute abdominal pain. Laparoscopy showed a normal appendix. However, a tumour in the ascending colon was found and hemicolectomy was performed. Pathological examination showed deep ulcerations with undermined edges and massive inflammation and necrosis. Periodic acid Schiff (PAS)-positive amoebae trophozoites were identified, and the patient was diagnosed with and treated for amoebiasis. The patient had not been abroad for 14 years but he worked with sewage. Patients in developed countries working with sewage should be considered at risk

Metabolites of the epidermal lipoxygenase-3 (eLOX-3) are involved in various metabolic pathways. Most unexpectedly, intra-amniotic delivery of eLOX-3 to mice at gestational day 14.5, both via an adenoviral vector and as recombinant protein, resulted in fetal growth restriction and intrauterine death. Periodic acid-Schiff staining and RT-PCR analysis of placentae from fetuses exposed to eLOX-3 indicated a lack of glycogen trophoblasts in the junctional zone. Placenta-specific gene expression was altered. Thus, the observed prenatal toxicity of eLOX-3 could be due to a strong effect on placental

The case of 53-year-old man who suffered from chronic lymphocytic leukemia since 1993 was presented. In the 6th year of treatment fludarabine was administered. Few days after administration of drug the patient developed watery diarrhoea not responding to treatment. We excluded both infectious etiological factors and infiltration of intestine in course of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Histopathological examination with monoclonal antibodies and periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS) revealed Whipple's disease as the reason of enteropathy. During 6 months diarrhoea caused extreme dyselectrolitemia, re

We present a unique case of crisis type chronic adult T-cell leukemia (ATL), in which the majority of leukemic cells had abundant periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive cytoplasmic inclusions. These inclusions were found to be composed of glycogen because the PAS-positivity completely disappeared after digestion with amylase or human saliva. Electron microscopy also revealed that the inclusions consisted of aggregated beta particles of glycogen. The mechanism of glycogen accumulation in leukemic cells remains unknown; however, the presence of such inclusions in leukemic cells may be helpful diagn

A case of adenocarcinoma with significant Paneth cell differentiation arising in a villoglandular polyp at the ampulla of Vater is presented. Paneth-like cells, containing distinct fuchsinophilic granules, were a prominent component of the nonglandular invasive adenocarcinoma and were also seen in the associated adenomatous polyp. Lysozyme, trichrome, and periodic acid-Schiff digest stains, and electron microscopy confirmed that the granules were lysosomal in nature. This case confirms that cells with Paneth-like features can be a significant component in invasive neoplasms and can occur at un

In the rat, the epithelial lining of the endolymphatic duct and sac, and the contents of the sac, showed remarkable differences in comparison with these structures in the guinea pig and man. Obliteration of the endolymphatic duct resulted in endolymphatic hydrops of varying severity in 55% of the rats, after survival times varying from one to five months. The presence of a positive periodic acid-Schiff-stain for coagulum accumulating in the endolymphatic duct after prolonged saccus obliteration suggests active involvement of the endolymphatic duct in the migration of endolymph toward the endol

Rectal biopsy material from a patient with type 4 glycogenosis was studied by ultrastructural cytochemical methods. The diagnosis of the disease was made on the basis of the patient's clinical history, the autopsy findings, and the histopathological features. Numerous large macrophages were observed in the rectal mucosa. They contained large vacuoles filled with filamentous material and small granules. This amylopectin was stained by the Thiery method (periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate) after 18 hours of exposure to thiocarbohydrazide; only 30 minutes was sufficient to demonst

Histoplasmosis is caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Primary cutaneous histoplasmosis is an exceptionally rare entity. While historically described in immunosuppressed patients, its prevalence in immunocompetent hosts in Latin America is rising, often misdiagnosed due to highly polymorphic, non-specific lesions like papules, plaques, nodules, or ulcers. We present a clinical case of a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)‑negative, otherwise immunocompetent patient with primary cutaneous histoplasmosis confined to the skin, diagnosed by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and Gomori-Grocott staining in the

Lysozyme-induced nephropathy is a rare form of acute tubular injury that has almost exclusively been reported in patients with monocytic malignancies. Typically, patients will present in acute renal failure A renal biopsy is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and will demonstrate proximal tubular cells with hypereosinophilic granules, which are periodic acid-Schiff and Jones methenamine silver-positive. Immunohistochemical staining for lysozyme will also be present. The following rare case will describe a case of lysozyme nephropathy in a patient without any underlying hematological malignancy

A 66-year-old man presented with subacute cough and worsening dyspnea. Labs were notable for moderate peripheral eosinophilia, and computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated extensive crazy-paving throughout bilateral upper lung fields. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) revealed macrophages with lipid-filled vacuoles and negative periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain. Further history obtained from the patient and family was notable for daily application of commercially available vapor rub to nares and intentional deep inhalation of nebulized fluids containing scented oils. The patient was diagnosed with

Proteinaceous lymphadenopathy (PLD) is a poorly defined, underreported pathological entity of uncertain etiology characterized by massive deposition of amorphous, eosinophilic, and periodic acid-Schiff-positive material involving lymph nodes, which is distinct from amyloid and clonal immunoglobulin deposition. PLD can resemble collagen sclerosis and needs to be differentiated from lymphomas with sclerosis, particularly classical Hodgkin lymphoma, nodular sclerosis type, and therefore is an important pitfall in the diagnosis of lymphoma with sclerosis. We are reporting a young patient with hist

Extramammary Paget's disease and Bowen's disease are histologically similar and immunohistochemistry is often required to make the diagnosis. We present a case of vulval Paget's disease with Bowen's disease in an elderly female. Strong positivity for cytokeratin 7, anti CAM 5.2, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain in clitoral, left labial and interface regions of the vulvectomy specimen confirmed the diagnosis of Paget's disease (PD) while positive staining for p63 in the right labial and interface regions helped in establishing the diagnosis of concurrent Bowen

BACKGROUND: Culture-negative endocarditis due to Tropheryma whipplei is a rare disease. Mostly the diagnosis is made by histologic examination of resected heart valve tissue.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report, we described a patient with a classical Whipple's disease. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) showed a vegetation on noncoronary cusp of the aortic valve. Whipple's disease was confirmed by positive Tropheryma whipplei polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in EDTA blood and a duodenal biopsy with positive periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS) macrophages.
CONCLUSION: Due to timely diagno

Somites are the mesodermal segments of vertebrate embryos that become the vertebral column, skeletal muscle and dermis. Somites arise within the paraxial mesoderm by the periodic, bilaterally symmetric process of somitogenesis. However, specification of left-right asymmetry occurs in close spatial and temporal proximity to somitogenesis and involves some of the same cell signaling pathways that govern segmentation. Here, we review recent evidence that identifies cross-talk between these processes and that demonstrates a role for retinoic acid in maintaining symmetrical somitogenesis by prevent

We report a case of hydatid disease at the proximal end of the clavicle of a 47-year-old woman. In an open biopsy, laminated layers, characteristic of Echinococcus multilocularis larvae, were revealed by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining. A marked foreign-body reaction was observed in the pathological findings. The patient was definitely diagnosed as having osseous hydatid disease. We performed resection of the infected part of the clavicle, and after the operation, she has been cured under medication with albendazole for 9 years, with no finding of recurrence in the clavicle.

An 8-year-old Holstein cow had tumor nodules and enlarged lymph nodes in the mediastinum, and metastatic tumor masses in the pelvic cavity. The neoplastic cells were characterized by squamous features and intracytoplasmic vacuoles carrying microvilli, some of which contained periodic acid Schiff-positive globular cores, but tubular structures or goblet cells were absent. Many neoplastic cells stained positively for keratin, and occasional cells were positive for thymosin. The presence of secretory granules in the cytoplasm was confirmed by electron microscopy. This neoplasm was considered to b

Twin sisters were clinically and endoscopically followed due to chemical injuries to the esophagus after ingestion of muriatic acid at 10 months of age. One of the girls developed esophageal carcinoma 10 years later and died after esophagectomy because of progression of the disease. Her twin sister has a severe stenosis at the distal esophagus and is waiting for surgical treatment. Malignization of a chemical injury to the esophagus in a child has not yet been described in the literature, emphasizing the role of endoscopic follow-up with periodic biopsies.

We present a case of extramammary Paget's disease (EMP) on the vulva of a 77-year-old female that on histologic examination resembled pemphigus vulgaris. The diagnosis of EMP was established with the help of a periodic acid-Schiff stain and immunophenotyping. Ultrastructural studies revealed no desmosomes between tumor cells and keratinocytes and only rare desmosomes between adjacent tumor cells. A high number of tumor cells with scant desmosomes may be the ultrastructural correlate with cellular discohesion in the lower epidermis and with the histologic resemblance to pemphigus vulgaris.
