Biodiesel from waste cooking oil in Mexico City.

The aim of this article is to evaluate the potential use of biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil in Mexico City. The study is divided in two main areas: the analysis of a waste cooking oil collection pilot project conducted in food markets of a Mexico City region; and the exhaust emissions performance of biodiesel blends measured in buses of the Mexico City public bus transportation network (RTP). Results from the waste cooking oil collection pilot project show that oil quantities disposed depend upon the type of food served and the operational practices in a cuisine establishment. Food m

Can Flemish women in semi-rural areas be motivated to attend organized breast cancer screening?

BACKGROUND: The implementation of organized breast cancer screening in Flanders was prepared by means of pilot projects within a multicenter study. In the semi-rural district of Kontich (Province of Antwerp, Flanders) a pilot project was performed using a mobile screening unit. Compared to international standards, the attendance rate for this pilot project (i.e. 34%) was low. Non-organized screening, which already exists in Flanders, at least partly explains this low attendance rate for the organized screening. The main purpose of our study was to investigate the experience of the pilot target

Homecare amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): A multidisciplinary, home-based model of care for patients with ALS and their caregivers.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Multidisciplinary care for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is recommended in international guidelines, but reaches its limits when immobility increases. This pilot project addresses this gap by delivering home-based, specialized, multiprofessional support to ALS patients who are not able to attend outpatient care. The study assessed the feasibility of this model of care and the satisfaction of both patients and caregivers. METHODS: This was a longitudinal cohort study of patients with ALS and their caregivers in the surroundings of Munich, Germany. Patient

Genotype Structure Alterations in 5q SMA Patients as a Result of the Newborn Screening Program Implementation in the Russian Federation.

Since 2023, the Russian Federation (RF) has implemented an expanded newborn screening (NBS) program for 36 hereditary disorders, which now includes 5q spinal muscular atrophy (5q SMA). As a result of newborn screening for 5q SMA conducted in the RF during 2023-2024, 288 newborns with a homozygous deletion of exon 7 in the SMN1 gene were identified by molecular genetic methods. The overall observed incidence of 5q SMA was 1 in 8439 newborns, which does not significantly differ from the expected incidence of 1 in 7953 newborns, established by previous pilot screening projects (p > 0.05). Antimicrobial stewardship in outpatient settings: leveraging innovative physician-pharmacist collaborations to reduce antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotic resistance is one of the world's most pressing public health problems. Historically, most drug-resistant bacteria have emerged in hospital settings, yet the vast majority of antimicrobials used in humans in the United States are administered in outpatient settings. Strong collaboration between physicians and pharmacists in the development of antimicrobial stewardship programs in outpatient settings is thus a critical strategy for curtailing antibiotic resistance. Recently, pilot projects have been launched in 3 states that pair physicians and community pharmacists under a Collaborat

The clinical 'end user'--a neglected resource in patient care?

In both medicine and science it is difficult to keep up to date with the large and rapidly increasing literature. Whilst a medical academic is likely to use electronic bibliographic databases for his research, he is less likely to use them in clinical practice. Although the potential advantages of an online search in a clinical situation have been appreciated for some time, in the UK it remains an under-utilised resource. In a pilot end user training project, 9 preclinical and 4 clinical academic staff were taught Data-Star command language together with methods of searching the Medline databa

Early Outcomes of a Multilevel Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Pilot Intervention in Federally Qualified Health Centers.

OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage in the United States remains low compared with other adolescent vaccines. As the largest primary care network in the United States, safety net clinics such as federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) serve patients at a disproportionate risk of HPV-related cancers. In this pilot project, the American Cancer Society (ACS) leveraged its primary care workforce to implement quality improvement interventions in the unique context of 30 FQHC systems across the country, including 130 clinic sites reaching >20,000 adolescents in a variety of geo

Management of tuberculosis infection in a general practice setting: An implemented model of care.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis infection (TBI) is an asymptomatic state in which people have been exposed to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but not yet developed active disease. Most Australian models of care for TBI have been based in tertiary clinics, but people from affected communities consistently would prefer to receive care in a general practice setting. OBJECTIVE: This project aimed to develop and implement a model of care for providing safe and effective management of TBI in general practice settings. We describe a pilot program, including training, algorithms for management and resource deve
