Mesostigmata mite assemblages in stands developed on former agricultural land.

Afforestation of post-agricultural land plays a crucial role in restoring forest soil properties and initiating secondary succession processes driven by soil biota. In this study, we compared Mesostigmata communities in even-aged (21 y./o.) stands of Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, and Tilia cordata established on a former agricultural lands, and adjacent fallow field as a reference habitat, located near the Żelazny Most tailings storage facility (Lubin Forest District, Poland). Soil sampling was conducted on 18 study sites (5 tree species and fallow field × 3 p

Improved BVOC estimation accuracy by integrating high-resolution land cover and species-specific emission factor in a subtropical city.

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), key precursors of near-surface ozone (O3), remain highly uncertain because coarse-resolution land cover data and plant functional type (PFT)-based emission factors (EFs) cannot capture fragmented vegetation and interspecific variability. Here, we developed a 10 m species-specific BVOC emission framework for Xiamen, China, by integrating satellite data with ground-based plant surveys. A localized BVOC EF database covering 115 tree species was established using field measurements of 14 dominant species and literature data. High-resolution mapping bett

Expansion and Nitrate-Responsive Expression of NRT3 Transport Regulators in Maritime Pine.

Nitrate uptake in plants is mediated by coordinated transporter systems, which include NPF, NRT2 and NRT3 proteins. While these families have been extensively studied in angiosperms, their evolution and regulation in conifers are still not well understood. In this work, we examined the NRT3 family in maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) and in representative plant lineages. Phylogenetic analyses of nucleotide sequences and the NRT3 protein revealed a broad expansion in gymnosperms, particularly in conifers, while copy number increases among angiosperms appeared to be more lineage-specific. In additi

Antimicrobial activity of some plant extracts against bacterial pathogens isolated from faeces of red deer (Cervus elaphus).

Antibacterial activity is the most widely studied aspect of plant extracts. Antibiotics extensively produced and consumed in large quantities, have proved to be problematic due to various types of adverse effects. The development of bacterial resistance to currently available antibiotics has necessitated the search for new antibacterial agents. One of the alternative strategies for fighting antibiotic- resistant bacteria is the use of natural antimicrobial substances such as plant extracts. We tested the antimicrobial activity of nine extracts from different plants against pathogenic bacteria

Conditioned food aversions: principles and practices, with special reference to social facilitation.

Conditioned food aversion is a powerful experimental tool to modify animal diets. We have also investigated it as a potential management tool to prevent livestock from grazing poisonous plants such as tall larkspur (Delphinium barbeyi), white locoweed (Oxytropis sericea) and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) on western US rangelands. The following principles pertain to increasing the strength and longevity of aversions: mature animals retain aversions better than young animals; novelty of the plant is important, although aversions can be created to familiar plants; LiCl is the most effective em

Dietary pine pollen induces masculinization in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, L. 1758) by modulating sex-biased gene expression and steroid hormone profiles.

BACKGROUND: The health and environmental risks associated with using 17-methyltestosterone hormone (MT) to produce all-male tilapia stocks limit the sustainability of aquaculture. As such, plant-based products with the potential to induce masculinisation in tilapia are gaining considerable attention as potentially safe, nature-based alternatives. However, the underlying mechanism for sex change induction by plant products remains unknown. The present study used pine pollen (PP) to study the processes modulating female-to-male sex change in three-day-old all-female Nile tilapia (Oreochromis nil

Pine pollen fiber alleviates constipation induced by loperamide in mice: focus on gastrointestinal motility-related hormones, short-chain fatty acids, and gut microbiota changes.

Constipation, a prevalent gastrointestinal disorder, urgently requires safe and effective intervention strategies. Natural dietary fibers have gained attention for their potential to alleviate constipation through multiple mechanisms. This study investigated the therapeutic effects of pine pollen fiber (PPF), a by-product from pine pollen processing, on loperamide-induced constipation in mice. The mice were administered low or high doses of PPF for 14 consecutive days, and we evaluated constipation-related indicators, serum levels of gastrointestinal peptides and neurotransmitters, gut microbi

Field assay of LDH-formulated dsRNA specific to vATPase against the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, via trunk injection.

The pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, causes severe damage to pine trees. Current chemical control methods have raised environmental concerns and the resistance issue of the nematode. Due to its high specificity, RNA interference (RNAi) has emerged as a promising approach for controlling pests, including plant-parasitic nematodes, through the application of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). This study has developed an effective dsRNA-based nematicide for controlling B. xylophilus under field conditions via trunk injection. First, the core RNAi machinery of B. xylophilus was identified

Dietary shredded steam-exploded pine particle supplementation as a strategy to mitigate chronic cyclic heat stress by modulating gut microbiota in broilers.

Improving the availability of underutilized waste for the economic use of livestock feed can be important in countries where feed grain production is scarce. Modulating the gut microbiota through the fibrous content present in these wastes may help mitigate the adverse effects of heat stress (HS). Here, we investigated the effects of dietary steam-exploded pine particle (SPP), a value-added waste product, on the performance, gut health, and cecum microbiota in heat-stressed broilers. Ross 308 broilers (n = 180) at 29 days of age were distributed into three dietary treatment groups (0%, 1%, and

Effects of pitamin on growth performance, carcass characteristics and cecal microflora of broiler chicken.

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of dietary pitamin as an antibiotic replacement in broiler chicken. The treated groups were as follows: 1) the control, 2) the antibiotics (8 mg of avilamycin kg(-1) of diet) and 3) the pitamin (70 mg of pitamin kg(-1) of diet) groups. Body weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency were significantly higher in the pitamin group than in the antibiotics and control groups (p<0.05). Carcass weight, dressing percentage, and the weight of breast and thigh muscle recorded significantly higher levels in the pitamin group as compared to the other gr

Short-term effects of fertilization on photosynthesis and leaf morphology of field-grown loblolly pine following long-term exposure to elevated CO(2) concentration.

We examined effects of a first nitrogen (N) fertilizer application on upper-canopy needle morphology and gas exchange in approximately 20-m-tall loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) exposed to elevated carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) for 9 years. Duke Forest free-air CO(2) enrichment (FACE) plots were split and half of each ring fertilized with 112 kg ha(-1) elemental N applied in two applications in March and April 2005. Measurements of needle length (L), mass per unit area (LMA), N concentration (N(l)) on a mass and an area basis, light-saturated net photosynthesis per unit leaf area (A(a))

Isolation and Connectivity: Population Structure of an Ectomycorrhizal Truffle in the Fragmented Mountain Landscape of the Madrean Sky Island Archipelago.

The impact of climate change induced habitat fragmentation on plant species and populations has been studied in numerous systems, but far less is known about how these processes shaped the population structure and demographic history of fungal symbionts. Here, we investigate the population structure and demographic history of ectomycorrhizal fungus Rhizopogon salebrosus, a symbiont of Pinus species, across the Madrean Sky Islands Archipelago (MSIA) of southern Arizona and northern Sonora. Rhizopogon salebrosus produces truffle-like sporocarps and depends on small mammals for spore dispersal. U

Integrating Multivariate Ordination and Machine Learning to Disentangle the Environmental Drivers of Xylem Sap Redox Metabolism in Trees.

Xylem sap is increasingly recognized as a dynamic biological matrix reflecting whole-plant physiological status, but its biochemical variation under field conditions remains insufficiently characterized. We investigated oxidative stress markers, osmolytes, antioxidant enzymes, and redox-related enzymes in xylem sap from three focal tree individuals representing Fraxinus excelsior, Populus nigra, and Pinus sylvestris. Sap was collected by passive stem tapping using a custom-built apparatus, and biochemical patterns were evaluated using multivariate statistical and machine-learning approaches. T

First Isolation of Fusarium foetens from coriander in Palestine and preliminary evaluation of essential oils for its control.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), a widely cultivated herb valued for its culinary and medicinal uses, is increasingly threatened by soil-borne fungal pathogens. During a field survey in Al-Beqai’a, Tubas district (Palestine) in spring 2024, coriander plants exhibited symptoms of yellowing, wilting, and damping-off. Morphological examination and molecular identification using ITS1 and ITS4 primers confirmed Fusarium foetens as the causal agent, marking the first report of this pathogen on coriander in Palestine. Pathogenicity was validated through inoculation trials fulfilling Koch’s postulat
