Plants regulate root development in response to fluctuating environmental conditions, including establishing symbiotic relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen-fixing bacteria under nutrient limitation. These processes are orchestrated by plant hormones, particularly gibberellins, and the repressors of gibberellin signalling, DELLA proteins. Gibberellin and DELLAs serve as critical regulators in symbiotic signalling and root organogenesis, integrating hormonal and environmental cues with cellular patterning to direct plant development. This review explores the current under

Arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs) are widely distributed in plant cells. Fasciclin-like AGPs (FLAs) belong to a subclass of AGPs that play important roles in plant growth and development. However, little is known about the biological functions of rice FLA. Herein, we report the identification of a male-sterile mutant of DEFECTIVE EXINE AND APERTURE PATTERNING1 (DEAP1) in rice. The deap1 mutant anthers produced aberrant pollen grains with defective exine formation and a flattened aperture annulus and exhibited slightly delayed tapetum degradation. DEAP1 encodes a plasma membrane-associated member

Early-diverging Mucoromycotina fungi are widely recognized for promoting plant growth and development. However, the specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) involved and their underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this study, we used a non-contact co-culture system to investigate the effects of VOCs emitted during the interaction between the beneficial fungus Gongronella butleri w5 (w5) and plants. Using solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we identified 1H-indole-4-carboxaldehyde (4-IC) and 4-methylbenzyl alcohol (4-MB) as the predominant VOCs detecte

Two mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades with MPK4 and MPK3/MPK6 as the bottommost kinases are key to plant growth/development and immune signaling. Disruption of the MPK4 cascade leads to severe dwarfism and autoimmunity, complicating the study of MPK4 in plant growth/development and immunity. In this study, we successfully rescued the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) mpk4 mutant using a chemical-sensitized MPK4 variant, MPK4YG, creating a conditional activity-null mpk4 mutant named MPK4SR (genotype: PMPK4:MPK4YG mpk4) that could be used to examine the functions of MPK4 in plant

Plant parasitism is a widespread lifestyle found throughout the plant kingdom that plays important roles in ecology and agriculture. Parasitic plants rely on the formation of specialized parasitic organs called haustoria to invade their hosts and withdraw nutrients. Currently, our knowledge is growing regarding how parasitic plants use haustoria to infect their hosts, modify their physiology and regulate infection. Important factors in plant development are hormone signaling molecules that play essential roles in how plants grow and interact with their surroundings. In recent years, major prog

The emergence of extracellular vesicles (EVs), which are natural lipid bilayer membrane structures facilitating intercellular substance and information exchange, has sparked innovative approaches in drug development and carrier enhancement. Plant-derived EVs notably offer advantages including low preparation cost, low immunogenicity, flexible drug delivery, high stability, good tissue permeability, and high inherent medicinal value compared to their animal-derived counterparts. Despite these promising attributes, the research on plant-derived EVs remains fragmented and lacks comprehensive synt

Bacterial extracellular vesicles (BEVs) are nanosized membrane-bound nanoparticles naturally secreted by Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. These vesicles mediate intercellular communication through delivery of diverse bioactive cargo, including proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, metabolites, and signaling molecules. Initially recognized as virulence determinants in pathogenic bacteria, BEVs are increasingly recognized as multifunctional platforms with potential applications in sustainable agriculture. This review examines BEV biogenesis, cargo composition, plant uptake, and emerging role

A fundamental understanding of plant sugar feeding behaviour in vector populations can lead to the development of ecologically effective vector monitoring and control strategies. Despite previous studies on mosquito-plant interactions, relatively few have been conducted on the dengue vector Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). The authors studied Ae. aegypti-plant interactions at two sites of varying dengue endemicity in Kenya: Kilifi (endemic) and Isiolo (non-endemic). Using chemical and molecular assays [DNA barcoding targeting the chloroplast ribulose-1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase l

Factors responsible for successful rescue of immature embryos of cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] and V. vexillata (L.) and for in vitro embryo development were studied. A new basal medium for embryo development in vitro was formulated on the basis of the mineral composition of embryos. Sucrose, fructose and glucose were compared as carbohydrate sources. The highest frequency of embryos developing into plants was obtained with sucrose. Adding casein hydrolysate to the medium increased plant recovery by 30%. Among the plant growth factors used, cytokinins, zeatin, 6-benzylaminopurine and k

Recent advances in genomics have revolutionized plant pathogen detection and control by enabling faster and more accurate identification compared to traditional culture-based methods. Genomic tools like metagenomics and next generation sequencing (NGS) facilitate the detection of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes) directly from environmental samples. Genomics also provides information on plant-pathogen interactions, especially the detection of Resistance (R) genes and their role in plant defense against pathogens, aiding in the development of genetic markers for breeding

The plant cell wall, composed primarily of polysaccharides, is essential for normal plant growth and development. Many of these polysaccharides are synthesized within and subsequently secreted via the endomembrane system. Mutations in genes including MURUS3 (MUR3), YPT/RAB GTPase-interacting protein 4 homologs (YIP4a/YIP4b), and ECHIDNA (ECH) result in dwarf plants, which is believed to be a consequence of impaired cell wall polysaccharide secretion. Here, we identify a LMBR1 (Limb Development Membrane Protein 1)-like membrane protein (LMBD2) and find that loss of LMBD2 suppresses the secretio

The plant microbiota can affect plant health and fitness by promoting methylmercury (MeHg) production in paddy soil. Although most well-known mercury (Hg) methylators are observed in the soil, it remains unclear how rice rhizosphere assemblages alter MeHg production. Here, we used network analyses of microbial diversity to identify bulk soil (BS), rhizosphere (RS) and root bacterial networks during rice development at Hg gradients. Hg gradients greatly impacted the niche-sharing of taxa significantly relating to MeHg/THg, while plant development had little effect. In RS networks, Hg gradients

Cytokinins are plant growth promoting hormones involved in the specification of embryonic cells, maintenance of meristematic cells, shoot formation and development of vasculature. Cytokinins have also emerged as a major factor in plant-microbe interactions during nodule organogenesis and pathogenesis. Microbe-originated cytokinins confer abnormal hypersensitivity of cytokinins to plants, augmenting the sink activity of infected regions. However, recent findings have shed light on a distinct role of cytokinins in plant immune responses. Plant-borne cytokinins systemically induce resistance agai

Climate warming is seasonally asymmetric, yet its impact on plant invasions is typically studied using uniform year-round warming, which may obscure season-specific mechanisms. In a pristine grassland, we used a four-year 2 × 2 factorial field-warming experiment coupled with a greenhouse bioassay to test how growing- and nongrowing-season warming influence soil nitrogen, fungal communities, and subsequent invasive plant performance. Growing-season warming increased soil NH4 +-N, NO3 --N, and available nitrogen, and elevated the effective species number of pathogenic fungi. Nongrowing-season wa

Modern agriculture largely relies on chemical fertilizers which have led to ecological damage and soil degradation. Environmental sustainability is crucial while considering the application of fertilizers to promote plant growth, crop yield, soil health and fertility. Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and microalgae have emerged as effective and ecofriendly substitutes for chemical fertilizers. These biostimulants and biofertilizers enhance soil fertility due to their natural synthesis of bioactive molecules such as amino acids, pigments, phytohormones and vitamins. They also aid in

Plant-parasitic nematodes are responsible for significant economic losses worldwide, affecting a wide range of crops. They infect and divert resources and impair plant growth. While resistance aims to limit parasite burden, tolerance is the ability of a plant to maintain its yield despite infection, which offers a complementary and potentially more sustainable strategy. Understanding how tolerance arises and operates requires mechanistic insights into host-parasite interactions and the constraints that shape them. In this study, we develop a mathematical model describing the coupled dynamics o

Biological control strategies are increasingly being explored as sustainable alternatives for managing rice blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae. In this study, we characterized three Bacillus pumilus isolates (DC01, DC09, and DC13) and evaluated their antifungal and plant-beneficial properties against M. oryzae. Whole-genome sequencing revealed multiple biosynthetic gene clusters associated with the production of antimicrobial metabolites. All three isolates inhibited fungal growth in dual-culture assays, whereas heat-stable diffusible antifungal activity was primarily associated with t

Plants require nutrients for growth, which they obtain from the soil via the root system. Fertilizers offer the essential nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, as well as critical secondary elements) required by plants. Soil productivity falls with each crop until nutrients are provided. A wide range of so-called fertilizer products, such as organic fertilizers, argon mineral fertilizers, and mineral fertilizers, can assist farmers in adjusting fertilization methods based on the environment and agricultural conditions (inhibitors, restricted materials, growth mediums, plant bio-stimu

A collection of small molecules called strigolactones (SLs) act as both endogenous hormones to control plant development and as ecological communication cues between organisms. SL signalling overlaps with that of a class of smoke-derived compounds, karrikins (KARs), which have distinct yet overlapping developmental effects on plants. Although the roles of SLs in shoot and root development, in the promotion of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal branching and in parasitic plant germination have been well characterized, recent data have illustrated broader roles for these compounds in the rhizosp
