BACKGROUND: Myofascial release (MR) has been widely used in sports and clinical environment. There are studies that have already evaluated the effect of MR on postural control, however, the data found are inconclusive.
OBJECTIVES: Investigate the effect of MR on ankle plantar flexor muscles over static postural balance.
METHOD: Sixty-five young men were randomized allocated into one of three groups: 1) MR group (n = 25, Myofascial Release); 2) Sham (n = 25, fake intervention); or 3) Control group (n = 15). Both MR and Sham techniques were applied during 5 min in the ankle flexors of each leg

Recent work demonstrated that sympathetic neurons innervate the skeletal muscle near the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), and muscle sympathectomy and sympathomimetic agents strongly influence motoneuron synaptic vesicle release ex vivo. Moreover, reports attest that the pontine nucleus locus coeruleus (LC) projects to preganglionic sympathetic neurons and regulates human mobility and skeletal muscle physiology. Thus, we hypothesized that peripheral and central sympathetic neurons projecting directly or indirectly to the skeletal muscle regulate NMJ transmission. The aim of this study was to defi

Rodent models are frequently used to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of pain and to develop novel analgesics. Robust behavioral assays that quantify nociceptive responses to different sensory modalities, such has heat, are therefore needed. Here, we describe a novel behavioral assay to quantify thermal paw withdrawal thresholds in mice, called the thermal probe test, and compared it with other methods commonly used to measure heat thresholds, namely the Hargreaves test and the dynamic and conventional hot plate tests. In the thermal probe test, a slightly rounded 2.5 mm d

BACKGROUND: The involvement of voltage-dependent calcium channels and reactive oxygen species in the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain might justify the preventative administration of antioxidant enzymes, at low doses, in combination with gabapentin (GaP) to maximize its analgesic effect in an experimental model of neuropathic pain in rats.
METHODS: This work investigated the analgesic effects of these drugs, alone or in combination, by intraperitoneal administration for three consecutive days before (Series I) or after (Series II) a peripheral neuropathy induced by left sciatic nerve ligat

The effect of lidocaine pretreatment on thermal hyperalgesia and thermal skin asymmetries provoked by experimental mononeuropathy was investigated in rats. Forty anesthetized rats were given sciatic nerve ligatures according to the technique of Bennett and Xie. Rats were divided into 3 groups: 16 were ligated without lidocaine, 16 were ligated after lidocaine bathing of the nerve, and 8 were ligated after systemic lidocaine (6-8 mg/kg). Six sham-operated rats for each group were also prepared. From the first postoperative day the responses to the hot-plate test were assessed daily for 4 weeks

The net joint moment is a commonly investigated kinetic quantity in running but currently requires force plates and optical motion capture. This study proposes a physics-based top-down inverse dynamics method to estimate net sagittal knee and ankle moment across three speeds using only inertial measurement units (IMUs). This method does not require musculoskeletal modelling, machine learning, pressure insoles, or centre of pressure. The top-down method was validated against a 2D IMU-driven/3D marker-driven OpenSim model and an IMU-based bottom-up inverse dynamics approach. Strong correlations

RATIONALE: Current data indicate that the noradrenergic system plays a critical role in neuropathic pain treatment. Notably, drugs that directly affect this system may have curative potential in neuropathy-associated pain.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential therapeutic efficacy of reboxetine, a potent and selective noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor, on hyperalgesia and allodynia responses in rats with experimental diabetes. Furthermore, mechanistic studies were performed to elucidate the possible mode of actions.
METHODS: Experimental diabetes was induced by a sin

Objective: Brachymetatarsia is defined as the pathological shortening of a metatarsal bone, which can cause cosmetic problems and pain in the forefoot. The main surgical treatment options are: extension osteotomy, interposition of a bone graft, and callus distraction. Usually, a bone graft from the iliac crest is used for the interposition osteotomy. The operative technique of graft extraction from the fibula has not been described in the literature yet. Methods: Eight feet with brachymetatarsia in 5 patients were evaluated retrospectively. The minimum follow-up period was 2 years. Via a dorsa

BACKGROUND: Ingrown nails are a very common problem. There are different stages of disease and diverse therapeutic options. Phenol and sodium hydroxide are commonly used agents for chemical matricectomy but both frequently entail excessive healing times.
OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed mainly to evaluate the efficacy of partial nail avulsion and selective chemical cauterization of the matrix using 80% TCA in the treatment of the ingrowing nail.
METHODS: One-hundred-and-thirty-three patients with 197 ingrown toenails were included in this study. Preoperatively, we tried to find predis

Background and Objectives: Previous studies have revealed that independent variables (lower extremity strength, postural control ability, and body composition) influence gait performance and variability, but the difference in the relative influence between these variables is unclear. Hence, this study determines the variable that is the most influential predictor of gait performance and variability among potential independent variables in the elderly. Materials and Methods: Seventy-eight subjects aged ≥60 years participated. For each subject, the gait variables and lower extremity muscle stren

Floating toe (FT) is a frequently seen condition in which a toe is inadequately in contact with the ground. Although toes play an important role in stabilizing standing posture and walking, many aspects of the effects of FT on the body remain unclear. To our knowledge, there have been no reports about the relationship between FT and postural stability, especially in children. This study aimed to clarify the prevalence of FT and its relationship with static postural stability in children. Of the 400 children aged 8 years who participated in our cohort study, 396, who were examined for static po

BACKGROUND: The maintenance of postural control is fundamental for different types of physical activity. This can be measured by having subjects stand on one leg on a force plate. Many studies assessing standing balance have previously been carried out in patients with ankle ligament injuries but not in patients with ankle fractures. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether patients operated on because of an ankle fracture had impaired postural control compared to an uninjured age- and gender-matched control group.
METHODS: Fifty-four individuals (patients) operated on because of an ankl

ETIOLOGY OF ONYCHOMYCOSES: Onychomycoses can be caused by dermatophytes, molds and yeasts. However, dermatophytes appear to be the chief organisms capable of a primary attack on the nail. By far the most frequent dermatophytes isolated from nails are Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and Epidermophyton floccosum. Molds virtually only invade toenails, but their role as a primary pathogen is still debated. Yeasts have been isolated from diseased nails at highly different rates. Nails may be infected by two different dermatophytes, two dermatophytes and a yeast, a dermatop

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: First metatarsophalangeal joint sprains or turf toe (TT) injuries occur secondary to forceful hyperextension of the great toe. TT injuries are common among athletes, especially those participating in football, soccer, basketball, dancing, and wrestling. This review summarizes the current treatment modalities, rehabilitation protocols, and return-to-play criteria, as well as performance outcomes of patients who have sustained TT injuries.
RECENT FINDINGS: Less than 2% of TT injuries require surgery, but those that do are typically grade III injuries with damage to the MTP jo
