Psychological factors affecting medical condition: a new proposal for DSM-V.

The DSM category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" had virtually no impact on clinical practice. However, several clinically relevant psychosomatic syndromes have been described in the literature: disease phobia, persistent somatization, conversion symptoms, illness denial, demoralization, and irritable mood. These syndromes, in addition to the DSM definition of hypochondriasis, can yield clinical specification in the category of "psychological factors affecting medical condition" and eliminate the need for the highly criticized DSM classification of somatoform disorders.

Understanding acute psychological distress following natural disaster.

A household probability sample of 229 adults was interviewed four to seven months after the Sierra Madre earthquake (June 28, 1991; Los Angeles County). The study predicted psychological distress from these variables: demographics, traumatic event history, low magnitude event history, earthquake related threat perceptions, and earthquake related resource loss. Based on the Conservation of Resources (COR) stress model, it was predicted that resource loss would be central in predicting psychological distress. Three major hypotheses were supported: (1) resource loss was positively associated with

The rise and fall of the lyme disease vaccines: a cautionary tale for risk interventions in American medicine and public health.

CONTEXT: Two vaccines to prevent Lyme disease (LD) were developed and tested in the 1990s. Despite evidence of their safety and efficacy in clinical trials and initial postmarketing surveillance, one vaccine was withdrawn before the regulatory review and the other after only three years on the market. An investigation of their history can illuminate (1) the challenges faced by many new risk-reducing products and practices and (2) the important role played by their social and psychological, as distinct from their biomedical or scientific, efficacy in how they are used, and their ultimate market

Respiratory Symptoms and Psychological Distress in Farmers Living With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

BACKGROUND: Farmers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) often face both respiratory issues and psychological distress, which can exacerbate their condition. However, no prior research has examined how the frequency of respiratory symptoms is associated to psychological distress in these individuals. Therefore, this study aimed to explore this relationship among U.S. farmers living with COPD. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involved 101 participants, a mix of on-site and online recruits, assessing respiratory symptoms and psychological distress in farmers with COPD. The study em

Schema Therapy for Individuals With Subthreshold Autistic Traits and Recurrent Depressive Disorder: A Case Study.

Schema therapy (ST) is a therapeutic approach to address chronic and complex psychological difficulties. ST is also used to treat mental health problems that individuals on the autism spectrum have. However, no practical reports exist on its application to cases involving subthreshold autistic traits with associated psychological difficulties. This report describes schema therapy for a woman with subthreshold autistic traits and raised in an abusive environment. The intervention was based on schema therapy for individuals on the autism spectrum and consisted of a total of 42 sessions. The effe

Watchfulness (Nepsis) and Attentive Presence (Prosoche): A Patristic Framework for Clinical and Spiritual Healing.

Contemporary clinical practice increasingly recognizes the centrality of attention, presence, and affect regulation in healing trauma and restoring psychological integration. Early Christian ascetical writers-particularly Hesychios, Evagrius, and Cassian-developed a sophisticated spiritual anthropology centered on watchfulness (nepsis) and attentive presence (prosoche), practices aimed at cultivating interior clarity, discernment, and freedom of heart. This article retrieves these ascetical disciplines and explores their relevance for modern clinical work, drawing on patristic sources and cont

When support for safety misses the mark: The positivity-dampening effect of upper management support following workplace injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace injuries harm not only physical functioning but also employees' psychological connection to work, elevating distress and undermining the emotional energy needed for reintegration. This study examines how formal organizational safety support shapes psychological recovery following injury. METHOD: Drawing on job demands-resources, social impact, and support typology perspectives, we tested whether perceived safety support from upper management, supervisors, and coworkers moderates the relationship between injury exposure and negative (psychological distress) and positive

Expatriate Nurses' Experiences of Psychological Safety and Cultural Adaptation in Saudi Arabian Hospitals: A Qualitative Interview Study.

AIM: To explore how organisational support systems shape psychological safety and cultural adaptation among expatriate nurses working in Saudi Arabian hospitals. BACKGROUND: Expatriate nurses make up a substantial share of the nursing workforce in Gulf health systems, and their integration is a recurring nurse management concern. Psychological safety, the shared belief that a team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking, is a plausible but underexamined organisational mechanism linking management practice to expatriate nurse adaptation, voice and retention. METHODS: Qualitative interview study

Alexithymia in nurses: a context-specific concept analysis using rodgers's evolutionary methodology.

BACKGROUND: Alexithymia, a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and describing emotions, as well as a tendency toward externally-oriented thinking, has significant implications for psychological well-being and interpersonal functioning. In the nursing profession, where emotional awareness and communication are essential, alexithymic traits may contribute to psychological distress and compromised patient interactions. However, its contextual manifestations and professional relevance within nursing remain insufficiently clarified. Rather than treating alexithymia in

Effectiveness of interventions for psychological distress following traumatic injury: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injury poses significant physical and psychological challenges, often resulting in psychological distress, encompassing symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. Despite the recognised need for psychological care in trauma rehabilitation, there is limited empirical evidence of effective interventions tailored specifically for individuals with traumatic injuries, leading to a practice-evidence gap. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of psychological and behavioural interventions for reducing psychological distress in adults follow

Building creative momentum: Social and psychological factors associated with flow in Chinese artists.

Flow is a deeply immersive psychological state characterized by intense concentration, intrinsic motivation, and a perceived balance between challenge and skill. Although prior research has examined flow in contexts such as sports, education, and workplace performance, limited attention has been paid to how social, cognitive, and motivational factors are associated with flow experiences among practicing artists. This study examined the relationships among perceived social support, the positive mindset dimension, creative process, expected self/life, and flow among practicing artists in China.

Psychological resilience and music performance anxiety: exploring mediators and sex differences in Chinese choir members.

Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a prevalent psychological challenge that can impair musicians' wellbeing and performance quality. While psychological resilience has been proposed as a protective factor, the mechanisms underlying its association with MPA remain unclear, particularly among choir members. This study examined the direct and indirect relationships between psychological resilience and MPA via performance control sense and pre-performance rumination, and further explored whether these pathways differed by sex. A total of 801 Chinese choir members completed validated measures of ps

An exploration of clinical psychology's response to parental bereavement in adults with intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The dearth of literature regarding how or when to intervene when an adult with intellectual disability is bereaved may impede clinical practice; this study therefore aimed to explore the current clinical psychology response, so as to enhance understanding of the role of the profession in supporting grief within this population. METHOD: A collective case study design was used. Data for six persons with intellectual disability, including interviews with parentally bereaved persons and involved staff members, were integrated into individual case stories for cross-case synthesis.
