The association of childhood abuse and neglect with tattoos and piercings in the population: evidence from a representative community survey.

BACKGROUND: Tattoos and piercings are becoming increasingly popular in many countries around the world. Individuals seeking such body modifications have reported diverse psychological motives. Besides purely superficial considerations, tattoos and piercings can also have a deep, personal meaning. For example, they can mark and support the emotional processing of significant life events, including formative experiences from early childhood. However, there is a lack of studies that examine the links of tattoos and piercings with experiences of childhood abuse and neglect in large, population-bas

How can the utilisation of help for mental disorders be improved? A quasi-experimental online study on the changeability of stigmatising attitudes and intermediate variables in the process of utilisation.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies show that even in highly developed countries many people with depression do not seek help for their mental health issues, despite promising prevention approaches encouraging people to seek help and reduce self-stigma. Therefore, an anti-stigma intervention study to support help-seeking behaviour will be developed on the basis of the newly explicated "Seeking Mental Health Care Model". METHODS: A quasi-experimental online study will be carried out to assess the effect of different intervention variables relevant for the help-seeking process. The study is con

Self-stigma, severity of psychopatology, dissociation, parental style and comorbid personality disorder in patient with neurotic spectrum disorders Part 1: Relationships between self-stigma and clinical, psychosocial and demograph.

OBJECTIVES: Self-stigma represents a process of accepting negative social prejudices with a consequent negative impact on many areas of the patient's life (self-concept, social and work functioning, relationships, cooperation in treatment, quality of life, willingness to strive for something). The study was aimed to examine the level of self-stigma and other significant variables potentially related to self-stigma (personality characteristics, childhood traumatisation, anxiety, depression, personality disorder, dissociation, parental styles, attachment). METHOD: The study was conducted at the

Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome: A Case Report With a Psychosomatic Perspective.

Context • The Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome (MRS) is a rare condition characterized by a triad of symptoms: (1) recurrent and/or persistent orofacial swelling, (2) recurrent facial paralysis, and (3) a fissured tongue. Although various contributing factors have been suggested, the etiology and mechanisms of the syndrome have not been fully elucidated. Objective • The aim of the current study was to examine for the first time some psychosomatic aspects of the syndrome and to evaluate the benefits of a brief psychotherapeutic process in which the research team worked to reintegrate the complex b

Treatment of substance abusing patients with comorbid psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To update clinicians on the latest in evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders (SUD) and non-substance use disorders among adults and suggest how these treatments can be combined into an evidence-based process that enhances treatment effectiveness in comorbid patients. METHOD: Articles were extracted from Pubmed using the search terms "dual diagnosis," "comorbidity" and "co-occurring" and were reviewed for evidence of effectiveness for pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments of comorbidity. RESULTS: Twenty-four research reviews and 43 research trials were revie

Altruism versus self-centredness in the personality of depressives in the 1950s and 1990s.

BACKGROUND: Research in personality features of patients with major depression has emphasised their tendency to set high standards for themselves. Two directions of acting on high standards have been differentiated which can be summarised as altruistic and self-centred attitudes. Typus melancholicus and narcissistic personality features are representative for them. Since both types of features are age correlated, the question had to be settled whether this reflects an individual process of social adaptation or an epochal change of values. METHODS: The study is based on a representative sample

MDA-assisted psychotherapy with neurotic outpatients: a pilot study.

Ten neurotic patients (five males and five females) were treated over a period of 2 to 6 months (mean, 4.1) as outpatients. The study allowed for a maximum of 75 hours of psychotherapy (mean, 51.55 hours). During the course of treatment, two to four (mean, 3.5) administrations of MDA (3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine) were employed as adjunctive aids in an effort to enhance the psychotherapeutic process. The mean duration of the drug sessions was 8 hours (range, 6 to 14 hours). The first administration of MDA took place when, in the therapist's judgment, sufficient rapport had been established wi

Forensic-Psychiatric Risk Evaluations: Perspectives of Forensic Psychiatric Experts and Older Incarcerated Persons From Switzerland.

Background: Forensic-psychiatric risk assessments of persons in prisons aim to provide treatment for their mental health disorders to prevent risk of recidivism. Based on the outcomes of such evaluations, it is decided, for instance, whether the person can be released or be assigned to further treatment with or without privileges. A negative evaluation would mean that the assessed person must remain in prison or in a forensic institution until his or her mental health has improved to live safely in the community. This paper highlights the process of forensic-psychiatric evaluations and the cha

Treatment failure in cognitive-behavioural therapy: therapeutic alliance as a precondition for an adherent and competent implementation of techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Treatment failure is a common phenomenon, but little is known about the reasons. Therapeutic alliance, therapist adherence, and therapist competence are considered important aspects of treatment success and formed the focus of the current investigation. DESIGN: Three randomized controlled trials for the treatment of depression, social phobia, and hypochondriasis were the basis of the current study. METHODS: The role of therapeutic alliance, as well as therapist adherence and competence, were investigated in 61 patients, which were classified either as treatment failure or as trea

How epistemic trust, mistrust and credulity relate to mental health, personality pathology, treatment engagement and relationship in psychotherapeutic and psychiatric settings.

BACKGROUND: Epistemic trust describes the capacity to appropriately identify others as reliable and relevant sources of information, an ability closely linked to attachment and social learning. Epistemic disruption can manifest as heightened suspicion (mistrust) or excessive reliance (credulity) vis-à-vis others, affecting mentalizing abilities and increasing vulnerability to psychopathology and maladaptive traits. These interdependent and multidirectional dynamics are pivotal to therapeutic learning, and thus to therapeutic change. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between epistemi

Standard CBT versus integrative and multimodal CBT assisted by virtual-reality for generalized anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a prevalent emotional disorder associated with increased dysfunctionality, which has a lasting impact on the individual's quality of life. Besides medication, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) represents the golden standard psychotherapeutic approach for GAD, integrating multilevel techniques and various delivery formats that enable the development of tailored treatment protocols. The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of a standard CBT protocol targeting worries, dysfunctional beliefs, and intolerance of uncertainty with

Adaptation of a brief intervention to support engagement in early psychosis services: a service user-informed psychotherapy modification and study protocol.

UNLABELLED: Early intervention services (EIS) for psychosis are associated with improved clinical and functional outcomes, yet disengagement from treatment remains common. Psychological barriers to early engagement such as stigma, mistrust, and negative treatment expectancies have been identified yet few interventions have been developed to directly target these. Just Do You is a brief, psychotherapeutic meta-intervention originally developed for youth with severe mental illness to target identified barriers to engagement and has been demonstrated to improve engagement and recovery. However, t

Integrating Phenomenological Psychopathology and Group Visual Art Therapy for Patients with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing need to translate insights from phenomenological psychopathology into psychotherapeutic practice. Phenomenology offers a deeper understanding of the lived experience of psychosis, and this understanding can render psychotherapy more individualized, empathically attuned, and recovery oriented by attending to experiential dimensions that conventional, symptom-focused approaches may overlook. In this study, we report qualitative findings of patients' lived experiences of group visual art therapy, which we conceptualize as structured phenomenological art therapy. T

A longitudinal bifactor approach to modelling somatic symptom development in psychosomatic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Persistent somatic symptoms display a large public health problem and are often treated or addressed alongside other conditions in psychosomatic medicine units. With growing evidence pointing to unfavorable central nervous processing in persistent symptom perception, we aimed at modelling somatic symptom clusters together with an overarching general factor (g-factor) longitudinally during psychosomatic treatment. METHODS: This study analyses data from the Multicenter Effectiveness Study of Inpatient Psychosomatic-Psychotherapeutic Treatment in German University Hospitals (MEPP, 19

Mechanisms of Dignity Therapy: Positive Outcomes in Older Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate two mechanisms, patient-level narrative richness and provider-patient empathy, of positive outcomes following Dignity Therapy, to focus provider training and intervention delivery. BACKGROUND: Dignity Therapy is a brief reminiscence-based psychotherapeutic intervention designed to help seriously ill patients preserve dignity, reduce distress, and improve quality of life. Identifying mechanisms through which the therapy works can improve training and delivery of this increasingly popular intervention. METHODS: Outpatients living with cancer (N = 203; M = 65.80 years;

Cariprazine in Bipolar Disorder and Substance Use: A Dual Approach to Treatment?

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by recurrent episodes of mania, hypomania, and depression and is often complicated by comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs). Up to 60% of individuals with BD experience SUDs, which exacerbate mood instability and increase the risk of rapid cycling, suicide, and poor clinical outcomes. Current treatment strategies, including lithium and valproate, show limited efficacy in treating both BD and SUD. Psychotherapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) offer benefits but lack a specific focus on substances such as cannabis and cocaine. Si

Experiencing eight psychotherapy approaches devoted to eating disorders in a single-day workshop increases insight and motivation to engage in care: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: For patients with eating disorders (EDs), early engagement in care is usually considered a positive prognostic factor. The aim of the study was to investigate how a single-day intervention devoted to early, brief, experiential exposure to a variety of psychotherapy approaches might support commitment to change and the decision to engage in care in patients with EDs. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-nine adult outpatients newly diagnosed with an ED took part in a single-day workshop for groups of up to ten patients, where they experienced eight psychotherapeutic approaches. Informed consent in psychotherapy: a survey on attitudes among psychotherapists in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: The legal and ethical guidelines of psychological professional associations stipulate that informed consent by patients is an essential prerequisite for psychotherapy. Despite this awareness of the importance of informed consent, there is little empirical evidence on what psychotherapists' attitudes towards informed consent are and how informed consent is implemented in psychotherapeutic practice. METHODS: 155 psychotherapists in Switzerland completed an online survey assessing their attitudes regarding informed consent. RESULTS: Among the surveyed psychotherapists, there was a h

A preliminary study of the effects of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy on structural brain networks in mood-dysregulated youth with a familial risk for bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for children (MBCT-C), as a psychotherapeutic intervention, has been shown to be effective for treating mood dysregulation (MD). While previous neuroimaging studies of MD have reported both pre-treatment structural and functional alterations, the effects of MBCT-C on brain morphological network organisation has not been investigated. METHODS: We investigated brain morphological network organisation in 10 mood-dysregulated youth with familial risk for bipolar disorder and 15 matched healthy comparison youth (HC). Effects of 12 weeks of MBCT-C wer

Psychopharmacotherapy and spirituality.

Although the connection between spiritual and physical has been acknowledged since the oldest of human civilizations and emphasized in almost all of religions, It has taken a lot of time for that connection to gradually recover its lost meaning. As it is evident that many diseases and illnesses can not be explained purely by physical causes nor treated with purely physical methods there is a growing interest in spirituality and its usability in the treatment of various diseases and states, as well as in everyday life. Despite the fact that a sense of positive, nourishing and healing power of f
