Microbiological response of localized sites with recurrent periodontitis in maintenance patients treated with tetracycline fibers.

BACKGROUND: Whether adjunctive tetracycline fibers can provide an additive effect to scaling and root planing in treating non-responsive sites in maintenance subjects is still controversial. Recolonization of the bacteria from untreated sites or from the extracrevicular region may explain the insignificant response to local therapy. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the microbiological response of sites treated with tetracycline fibers combined with scaling and root planing. METHODS: The study was conducted in a split-mouth design. Thirty patients on maintenance therapy having

Some effects of non-surgical therapy on gingival inflammatory cell subsets in patients with adult and early-onset periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Limited information is available to determine if there is a distinction in local cellular immunity between adult and early-onset periodontitis. Furthermore, the effect of scaling and root planing on various lymphocyte subsets is sparsely described. METHODS: Clinical measurements were recorded and gingival biopsies were performed before and after scaling and root planing in 10 subjects with adult (AP) and in 10 with early-onset periodontitis (EOP). The specimens were cut into serial sections and, using the alkaline phosphatase-anti-alkaline phosphatase technique, monoclonal antibod

Use of the Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) to assess full-mouth treatments of chronic periodontitis.

Previous studies have not resolved whether scaling and root planing with a full-mouth (with or without antiseptics) or quadrant approach is better for treatment of chronic periodontitis. We identified relevant studies and used Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) criteria to critically interpret the results of all relevant studies. A literature search was performed using the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases up to July 2015. Selected studies were stratified according to their quality, quantity, and consistency. In total, 377 studies were identified, and 36 articles selected for retr

Novel indocyanine green mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in the management of chronic periodontitis - A randomized controlled clinico-microbiological pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The use of scaling, root planing, antimicrobials, or antibiotics in the treatment of Chronic Periodontitis have proven beneficial in the past. The reduction in inflammatory markers and significant resolve in the clinical signs and symptoms and microbial loads evinced by a number of studies are a clear corroboration of the fact, but certain restraints utilizing these methods call for more effective ways of treating the disease. Later, lasers or photodynamic dyes used with the lasers like methylene blue or toluidine blue O have also not proven much efficacy and need further research.

The rôle of chlorhexidine in the one-stage full-mouth disinfection treatment of patients with advanced adult periodontitis. Long-term clinical and microbiological observations.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recent studies reported significant additional clinical and microbiological improvements when severe adult periodontitis was treated by means of a "one-stage full-mouth" disinfection instead of a standard treatment strategy with consecutive root planings quadrant per quadrant. The one stage full-mouth disinfection procedure involves scaling and root planing of all pockets within 24 h in combination with an extensive application of chlorhexidine to all intra-oral niches such as periodontal pockets, tongue dorsum, tonsils (chairside, and at home for 2 months). This study aims to

Local delivery of chemotherapeutic agents in periodontal therapy: has its time arrived?

The concept of locally delivering chemotherapeutic agents to the periodontal pocket as a method to treat periodontal disease has been studied for over 20 years. A number of locally delivered chemotherapeutic agents in periodontal therapy are either currently available or under investigation. Clinical efficacy derives from sustained-release technology to maintain an effective concentration of drug within the periodontal pocket for a clinically relevant length of time. Studied drugs have mainly been antimicrobials, both antibiotics and antiseptics. Most agents have been tested as adjuncts to sca
