Association between Screen Time and Sociodemographic Factors, Physical Activity, and BMI among Children in Six European Countries (Feel4Diabetes): A Cross-Sectional Study.

Screen time among children in most European countries is notably high and is influenced by various sociodemographic and other factors. Our study aimed to explore the associations between parents' sociodemographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, risk status for type 2 diabetes, and their children's BMI, physical activity, and screen time. The data were sourced from the 2016 Feel4Diabetes study, involving 12,280 parents and 12,211 children aged 6-9 years (average age 8.21 years) in a cross-sectional study design. We used a logistic regression mode

Mental Health of Young Australians during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Exploring the Roles of Employment Precarity, Screen Time, and Contact with Nature.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is widely understood to have contributed to mental health problems. In Australia, young people (18-24 years) have been disproportionately affected. To date, research has predominantly focused on the presence or absence of mental illness symptoms, while aspects of mental well-being have been overlooked. We aimed to explore associations between potential risk and protective factors and mental health more comprehensively, using the Complete State Model of Mental Health. An online survey of 1004 young Australians (55% female; M age = 21.23) was unde

Influence of physical activity, screen time and sleep on inmates' body weight during incarceration in Canadian federal penitentiaries: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Recent research found that inmates experience undesirable and rapid weight gain during incarceration in Canadian federal penitentiaries. However, little is known about what factors and daily movement behaviours (e.g., physical activity, screen time, and sleep) influence weight gain during incarceration. This study examines how these 24-h movement/non-movement behaviours contribute to weight gain during incarceration. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study explored how weight change outcomes during incarceration (weight change, body mass index (BMI) change, and yearly weight gain)

Screening for retinopathy of prematurity in South Africa: are those developing severe ROP screened on time? Data from a prospective register.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To determine whether retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening is initiated on time according to current South African (SA) guidelines, that is, before the onset of stage 3 and type 1 ROP. METHODS: A prospective study of preterm infants screened at five neonatal units between 1 May 2022 and 31 January 2023 in Cape Town, SA. Data on all infants screened with a birth weight <1250 g or gestational age (GA) <32 weeks were extracted from the ROP South African (ROPSA) register, including postnatal age (PNA) and postmenstrual age (PMA) at first screening. RESULTS: A total of 696 i

The impact of regional screening policies on the diffusion of cancer screening participation in Belgium: time trends in educational inequalities in Flanders and Wallonia.

BACKGROUND: We investigate whether the extent of educational inequalities in the use of Pap smears (cervical cancer screening) and mammograms (breast cancer screening) in Belgium has changed over time in accordance with the pattern predicted by diffusion of innovation theory, as well as how the regional cancer screening policies of Flanders and Wallonia influence this pattern. METHODS: Data were obtained from five successive cross-sectional waves (1997-2001-2004-2008-2013) of the Belgian Health Interview Survey. Final sample sizes consisted of 8988 women aged 25-64 years for cervical cancer s

Effect of screening result on waiting times to assessment and breast cancer diagnosis: results from the Ontario Breast Screening Program.

BACKGROUND: The effect of severity of screening result on delays to diagnosis has primarily been examined for mammographic abnormalities. This study will examine delays to assessment and diagnosis for women with an abnormal mammogram compared to women with an abnormal clinical breast examination (CBE) or abnormal CBE and mammogram. METHODS: Using data routinely collected by Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP), 12,675 women aged 50 to 69 with an abnormal screening result between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2000 were followed prospectively to the completion of their assessment process.

Time-varying differences in stroke recurrence risk between types of atrial fibrillation based on screening methods and timing of detection.

INTRODUCTION: Atrial fibrillation (AF) burden progresses with time. Among ischemic stroke (IS) patients, AF can be detected at different burden progression stages based on the timing and screening method. We hypothesized that AF detected after IS on 12-lead ECGs (ECG-AF) and via 14-day-Holter prolonged cardiac monitoring (AFDAS) are linked to lower IS recurrence risk than AF known before stroke occurrence (KAF) because of being at an earlier progression stage than KAF. Additionally, we posited that IS recurrence risk differences between AF types vary over time due to their differential progres

Physical activity, entertainment screen time, and dietary fat profiles and concurrent weight status among school-attending Chinese children and adolescents: CHNS 2004-2011.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity, screen-based leisure, and diet co-occur, but profiles estimated from a small set of indicators may be sensitive to historical period and model assumptions. We identified profiles defined by total physical activity, reported entertainment screen time, and dietary fat contribution to energy intake in the 2004-2011 China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), and examined their concurrent associations with weight status. METHODS: This pooled cross-sectional analysis included 4,112 person-wave observations from school-attending participants aged 6-17 years. A prespecif

Impact of the Interaction Between Screen Time and Activity Interests on Adolescent Depression Risk: Construction of a Predictive Model Based on Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression is an increasing public health concern, with excessive screen time elevating depression risk and activity interests providing protection. However, most studies examine these behaviors separately and rely on limited analytical methods. This study used machine learning (ML) to develop a predictive model and evaluate the combined influence of screen time and activity interests on adolescent mental health. METHODS: A multi-center survey was conducted among adolescents aged 10-14 years in Chongchuan District, Nantong. Depression-related domains were assessed using

The Impact of Screen Time on the Health of the Pediatric Population: Short- and Long-Term Consequences for Lifestyle, Ophthalmology, and Mental Health.

This review analyzes extensive scientific data linking screen time to a wide range of health problems in the pediatric population and divides them into short-term and long-term health effects. Excessive exposure to screen media negatively affects many aspects of the health of children and adolescents. We can observe negative effects that translate into patients' lifestyles as well as ophthalmological and mental health problems. After analyzing the studies, the most common short-term consequences, such as obesity, sleep disorders, and dry eye syndrome, were identified. Many studies have highlig

A novel strategy to screen inhibitors of multiple aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry.

Resistance to aminoglycoside antibiotics occurs primarily as a result of aminoglycoside-modification enzymes (AMEs) that modify the antibiotics. In this work, a novel strategy to combat the effects of antibiotic resistance was developed by screening multiple AMEs inhibitors with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF MS). The method screened inhibitors of three AMEs (AAC(6')-APH(2"), AAC(6') and APH(2")) simultaneously through measuring the acetyltransferase activity and phosphotransferase activity of AAC(6')-APH(2") enzyme in a sin
