INTRODUCTION: Faba bean breeding and genomics have seen steady progress in recent years, supported by genome sequences and high-density genotyping platforms. These tools have been valuable for trait mapping, diversity assessment, and genomic research, but they have limited routine use in breeding programs due to their relatively high cost. Recent progress in establishing an optimized, cost-efficient genotyping-by-sequencing protocol tailored to the large and complex faba bean genome has created the foundation for a more accessible genotyping solution.
METHODS: Using this approach, we explored

To meet human needs, domestic pigeons (Columba livia) with various phenotypes have been bred to provide genetic material for our research on artificial selection and local environmental adaptation. Seven pigeon breeds were resequenced and can be divided into commercial varieties (Euro-pigeon, Shiqi, Shen King, Taishen, and Silver King), ornamental varieties (High Fliers), and local varieties (Tarim pigeon). Phylogenetic analysis based on population resequencing showed that one group contained local breeds and ornamental pigeons from China, whereas all commercial varieties were clustered togeth

Plant diseases remain a major constraint to crop productivity and global food security. Conventional breeding has long been used to develop resistant cultivars through the introgression of resistance traits from wild relatives and the selection of favorable phenotypes. However, this process is often slow and limited by linkage drag, known genetic diversity, intrinsic genetic limitations, and the rapid evolution of pathogen populations. Molecular breeding strategies, including marker-assisted selection and genomic selection, have improved the precision of resistance breeding but still rely on e

The domestic dog is the most morphologically diverse domesticated mammalian species. That diversity has arisen from deliberate, sustained artificial selection over the most recent 1% of the domestic dog's evolutionary history. However, artificial selection has pushed many individual breeds so far from the ancestral canine form that many dogs within these breeds can no longer perform the critical biological functions their bodies evolved to serve. Indeed, much of the popularity of many dog breeds is predicated on them no longer being functional dogs; rather, they are representations or caricatu

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) infection in dogs is distributed globally. Given the potential impact of T. gondii on human reproductive health and its zoonotic potential, focusing on infected dogs with breeding disorders may provide valuable new insights into the role of toxoplasmosis on reproductive disorders. This study aimed to elucidate the potential role of T. gondii on reproductive disorders by conducting a serosurvey on a kennel with breeding disorders in Kerman, Iran.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Purebred dogs with American Kennel Club-certified Pedigrees were randomly selected

Knowledge of the values of genetic parameters is a prerequisite for conducting a breeding program. This is especially important for rumination, which is considered an indicator of cow's health. Exploring the genetic relations between rumination time, milk yield, and milking traits could make it a valuable tool in dairy cattle breeding strategies. The objective of the research was to estimate heritability, repeatability, and genetic and phenotypic correlations of rumination time (RT), as well as traits associated with milk yield and milking of dairy cows of the Polish Holstein-Friesian breed ke

The axial musculoskeletal system of quadrupedal mammals is not currently well understood despite its functional importance in terms of facilitating postural stability and locomotion. Here we examined the detailed architecture of the muscles of the vertebral column of two breeds of dog, the Staffordshire bull terrier (SBT) and the racing greyhound, which have been selectively bred for physical combat and high speed sprint performance, respectively. Dissections of the epaxial musculature of nine racing greyhounds and six SBTs were carried out; muscle mass, length, and fascicle lengths were measu

Cattle show considerable variability in their responses to a wide range of disease challenges, and much of the variability is genetic. This review highlights genetic variation in disease susceptibility in Bos taurus cattle, with variation found at the breed level and also within breeds. Disease challenges come from bacteria and viruses, parasites and feed-borne toxins. For an animal to survive, it needs its own mechanisms for resisting these challenges, or for being resilient to them, or it must be protected artificially from them. Disease challenges have been classified as 'diseases from with

Seed oil content, protein content, and yield are agronomically important, correlated traits that determine the economic value of soybean (Glycine max). However, improving seed quality and yield simultaneously is challenging because gains in one breeding target often compromise the other, and the genetic basis of this trade-off is poorly understood. Here, we performed a genome-wide association study of 429 diverse soybean accessions and identified Seed Oil and Protein 5 (SOP5), which encodes a kinesin protein, as a key locus associated with seed oil and protein content. Knockout and overexpress

Improvement of aquaculture production, conservation and stock management of T. guineensis species are important. The genetic variation of this specie as well as their cross-breeding pattern and growth performance were assessed. One hundred and fifty live samples with average weights of TG (21.90g and 31.60g) for females and males, respectively, were collected from three different water bodies. DNA was extracted using the phenol-chloroform isoamyl alcohol method from randomly selected fish populations. The quality and quantity of DNA were determined using a spectrophotometer. Mycobacterium bovis (Mb) is the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTb). Genetic selection aiming to identify less susceptible animals has been proposed as a complementary measure in ongoing programs toward controlling Mb infection. However, individual animal phenotypes for bTb based on interferon-gamma (IFNɣ) and its use in bovine selective breeding programs have not been explored. In the current study, IFNɣ production was measured using a specific IFNɣ ELISA kit in bovine purified protein derivative (bPPD)-stimulated blood samples collected from Holstein cattle. The use of fat to support the energy needs of reproduction (i.e. capital breeding) has been studied in a diversity of taxa. However, despite reproductive output (i.e. young or eggs) being approximately 70% water, little is known about the availability of internal resources to accommodate the hydric demands of reproduction. Recent research suggests that dehydration increases the catabolism of muscle as a means of maintaining water balance. Accordingly, we investigated the interactive effects of reproductive investment and water deprivation on catabolism and reproductive output in female Childre

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) is an important economic species in freshwater aquaculture and its industry has been confined due to variety degeneration and frequent diseases. Marker-assisted selection is a feasible method for selective breeding of new varieties. Transcriptome data have greatly facilitated high-throughput single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) marker discovery and phenotype association study. In this study, we gained a total of 25,981 and 5,775 high quality SNPs in two transcriptomes from individuals and cell lines, respectively. Comparative transcriptome analysis identifi

The main objective of this study was to investigate environmental factors affecting yearling weight (YW) in pasture-raised Nellore cattle. The dataset encompassed records from 143,332 animals across 60 farms, integrating animal-level information (i.e., phenotype and pedigree relationships) with farm-level data on environmental conditions (climate, soil classifications, and elevation) and management practices at the rearing sites, hereafter referred to as descriptors. Farm-level descriptors were carefully selected based on three steps: (i) evaluation of each descriptor's contribution to explain

A total of 51,161 records of scrotal circumference measurements at 18 mo of age (SC18) and 17,648 records of sperm defects and breeding soundness of Nellore bulls (mean age of 22.5 mo), raised under extensive conditions, were analyzed to estimate coefficients of heritability and genetic correlations of morphological semen traits by Bayesian inference. The observed semen traits were classified as minor (MID), major (MAD), and total sperm defects (TD). The animals were classified according to breeding soundness as satisfactory and unsatisfactory potential breeders. The (co)variance components an

BACKGROUND: The rates of congenital disorders in Swiss sheep were determined by a questionnaire which was sent to 3,183 members of the Swiss Sheep Breeders' Association.
FINDINGS: A total of 993 questionnaires were returned, giving a response rate of 31.2%. Of these, 862 questionnaires originated from farms keeping one of the predominant Swiss sheep breeds: Swiss White Alpine sheep, Brown-Headed Meat sheep, Swiss Black Brown Mountain sheep and Valais Blacknose sheep. During a 10-year-period, entropion was reported in 33.6% of the farms, brachygnathia inferior in 29.5%, abdominal/umbilical her

To determine the factors affecting reproductive efficiency in a seasonal breeding artificial insemination (AI) programme in dairy herds in Uruguay, a field trial was conducted on three dairy farms. Lactating cows (n=328) intended to be bred at the following breeding period were selected. The trial started 1 week before the beginning of the breeding period and lasted 80 days or until first service. Milk samples were obtained biweekly for 12 weeks, starting 1 week prior to the breeding season to determine progesterone concentrations. Data indicated that 12.5% of the cows were anoestrus at the be

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, Holstein-Friesian (HF) selection schemes have undergone profound changes, including the introduction of optimal contribution selection (OCS; around 2000), a major shift in breeding goal composition (around 2000) and the implementation of genomic selection (GS; around 2010). These changes are expected to have influenced genetic diversity trends. Our aim was to evaluate genome-wide and region-specific diversity in HF artificial insemination (AI) bulls in the Dutch-Flemish breeding program from 1986 to 2015.
METHODS: Pedigree and genotype data (~ 75.5 k) of 6280 AI

Historically, 8 × 0.5 ml straws, containing approximately 800 million sperm and 250 million progressively motile sperm were provided as a single 'breeding dose' of cryopreserved stallion semen. With the use of deep horn artificial insemination, there is a trend to reduce the number of 0.5 ml straws sold as a breeding dose, sometimes down to as little as one straw. Our aims were to determine if the number of straws provided as a breeding dose, as well as other mare, stallion and management factors, have an impact on pregnancy outcome in mares inseminated with cryopreserved semen. Unexpectedly,
