What binds biosociality? The collective effervescence of the parent-led conference.

Questions of community are central to many research settings in the social sciences. Rabinow argued that, in the wake of the Human Genome Project, an increasingly important form of collectivity would be biosociality. Biosociality recognises a central role for biomedical knowledge in constructing genetic identities and producing and reproducing social relationships. Accordingly, it is often imagined as a new form of social solidarity. We draw on observations of parent-led conferences to explore the way in which biosociality is expressed at events organised around a particular genetic syndrome -

Abstinence from drugs of abuse in community-based members of Narcotics Anonymous.

OBJECTIVE: Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is an abstinence-based fellowship with more than 58,000 groups worldwide. There has, however, been little research reported on its members. This study was designed to clarify the nature of the participants in NA who are primarily abstinent, long-term members. METHOD: A protocol was implemented to survey members at 10 NA group meetings in three different states, through the cooperation of the NA World Service Office. A 51-item self-administered questionnaire, addressing key aspects of substance use and recovery, was anonymously completed by 396 respondents.

Deriving service costs for a clubhouse psychosocial rehabilitation program.

This article (a) discusses "function cost," a concept to estimate costs where consumers are involved both in delivery and receipt of services; (b) develops a methodology for costing service units for psychosocial rehabilitation clubhouses; and (c) presents a case study of a clubhouse program. Using function cost to estimate the value of member time leads to costs being on average about 10% higher than when using opportunity cost. Because the case-study clubhouse is typical in key dimensions, the methods used here appear generalizable to other programs and should have utility for other rehabili

Cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders: progress and problems.

Beginning with the application of operant conditioning principles as part of inpatient treatment, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for anorexia nervosa (AN) has been insufficiently studied. Its efficacy remains in question. By contrast, manual-based CBT is the first-line treatment of choice for bulimia nervosa (BN) although its effects are limited. More effective methods are needed for non-responders to current therapy. Despite its well-established efficacy, CBT for BN is relatively rarely used in the US. Research on dissemination is a priority. Modified CBT and behavioral weight control progr

Addiction careers and careers in addiction.

Research into resocialization of criminals or into recovery from substance dependence has stressed the need to give up the deviant identity and lifestyle. However, addiction careers, crime, and other types of deviant behavior require a wide range of skills. Such competence may facilitate the alternative or simultaneous pursuit of "respectable" careers in treatment, prevention, research, or policy matters. Former alcoholics fill important positions in the service structures of Alcoholics Anonymous, current or former users are appreciated as partners in AIDS prevention programs, and drug addicts

Managing illicit drug use. A practical guide.

Illicit drug use is spreading, especially in the developing world, but has begun to stabilise in most developed countries. The phenomenon of illicit drug use is still poorly understood, with responses in most countries influenced largely by cultural factors. A range of psychosocial and pharmacotherapeutic treatments is available; of these, methadone maintenance treatment for heroin dependence has the most evidence of benefit. A large body of literature--including some well designed studies--indicates that methadone reduces heroin use, mortality, criminal activity and risk of human immunodefici

The management of patients in a phobia clinic.

Management of people in this phobia clinic is based on a theory that phobias result from misinterpretations of the effects of a natural process that generates fear in responses to imagined dangers as in a nightmare. With support, guidance, exposure, and information, phobic people learn in individual and group settings to confront, control, and understand their phobic experience.

Lives in isolation: stories and struggles of low-income African American women with panic disorder.

Research evidence points to the existence of racial-ethnic disparities in both access to and quality of mental health services for African Americans with panic disorder. Current panic disorder evaluation and treatment paradigms are not responsive to the needs of many African Americans. The primary individual, social, and health-care system factors that limit African Americans' access to care and response to treatment are not well understood. Low-income African American women with panic disorder participated in a series of focus-group sessions designed to elicit (1) their perspectives regarding

'We Don't Have to Prove to People How We're Feeling': Understanding the Role of Peer Support Groups in Countering Epistemic Injustices in Long COVID at a US Centre.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID, an infection-associated chronic condition characterised by new or worsening signs or symptoms for more than 3 months after a SARS-CoV-2 infection, is a chronic debilitating illness which remains poorly understood. Epistemic injustice in healthcare describes the unique harms or wrongs done to a person in their capacity to share and acquire knowledge about their illness. Although the concept of epistemic injustice has been described in other chronic conditions, few studies have explored these concepts in Long COVID. OBJECTIVES: (1) To understand the lived experience of e

A structural equation model of posttraumatic growth after prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic growth (PTG) encompasses an individual's perception of positive personal changes as a consequence of a traumatic incident. The current study tested a theoretical model of PTG with the inclusion of resilience in the context of cancer survivors. METHODS: Members of a prostate cancer support network were invited to complete a cross-sectional mail survey (N = 514, 52.8% response; mean age 70.17 years, and time since diagnosis 7.5 years). RESULTS: Challenge appraisal (β = 0.361), examining core beliefs (β = 0.474), intrusive rumination (β = 0.130), and peer support facto

Self-help cognitive-behavioral therapy with minimal therapist contact for social phobia: a controlled trial.

Due to treatment accessibility and cost issues, interest in self-help programs (e.g., bibliotherapy, telehealth) for common psychological disorders is growing. Research supporting the efficacy of such a program for social anxiety, however, is limited. The present study examined the efficacy of an 8-week self-directed cognitive behavioral treatment with minimal therapist involvement for social phobia based on a widely available self-help book. Twenty-one adults with social phobia initially received either treatment (i.e. assigned readings in the workbook with limited therapist contact) or were

[Similarities and differences in the therapy of drug-dependent and alcoholic patients: advantages and disadvantages of combined treatment].

Alcoholics and (other) drug addicts show similar and different qualities. Differences affecting their "combined treatment" are based mainly on age and life style and much less on pharmacological nature of the drug concerned. Therapists and patients experience certain problems in "combined treatment" of addicts and alcoholics but also an extension of mental horizon-having to deal with such a heterogeneous population. Close, daily contact with older, more mature, experienced alcoholics offers young drug addicts an opportunity for a more rapid development of motivation, cooperation with treatment

UK women's experiences of breastfeeding and additional breastfeeding support: a qualitative study of Baby Café services.

BACKGROUND: Whilst 81 % of UK women initiate breastfeeding, there is a steep decline in breastfeeding rates during the early postnatal period, with just 55 % of women breastfeeding at six weeks. 80 % of these women stopped breastfeeding sooner than they intended, with women citing feeding difficulties and lack of adequate support. As part of efforts to increase breastfeeding continuation rates, many public and voluntary organisations offer additional breastfeeding support services, which provide practical support in the early postnatal period and beyond. This paper focuses on the qualitative e

A study of shame from sexual abuse within the context of a Norwegian incest center.

Working with those who have experienced sexual abuse is a complicated matter because such abuse not only involves the violation of the victim's body, but it often generates shame in those involved. This article is based on empirical data from 26 hours of videotaped focus group interviews with 19 adult men and women in a Norwegian incest center who spoke openly of the shame they experienced from sexual abuse as children, parents, and employees. Findings from this study show that shame from sexual abuse can be grouped into seven major categories: (a) family, (b) emotions, (c) body, (d) food, (e)

Enhanced fidelity to treatment for bipolar disorder: results from a randomized controlled implementation trial.

OBJECTIVE: The authors compared fidelity to bipolar disorder treatment at community practices that received a standard or enhanced version of a novel implementation intervention called Replicating Effective Programs (REP). METHODS: Five community practices in Michigan and Colorado were assigned at random to receive enhanced (N=3) or standard (N=2) REP to help implement Life Goals Collaborative Care (LGCC), a psychosocial intervention consisting of four self-management support group sessions, ongoing care management contacts by phone, and dissemination of guidelines to providers. Case study of alopecia universalis and web-based news groups.

This article presents findings from an 18-month case study of a web-based news group used by individuals with alopecia universalis. Content analysis of 228 episodes of web-based communication that occurred in relation to themes of discussion was undertaken, supported by the use of concept mapping (Northcott, 1996). Analysis identified a core concept relating to that of a community of shared experience together with four supportive themes. The themes were the search for understanding and meaning, carrying on, seeking balance between past, present and future, and relating to new self, others, an
