Human brucellosis at a pig slaughterhouse.

Seventeen workers in a pig slaughterhouse with signs and symptoms compatible with brucellosis were clinically examined at the outpatient service of different health institutions and studied by serological tests during the period 2005-2011. Eleven blood cultures were taken and six Brucella suis strains were isolated, three biovar 1 and three with atypical characteristics. In order to confirm that these cases had no common source, a variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) analyses were performed on 5 of the 6 strains whose results showed substantial heterogeneity in the genotypes, thereby demons

Pharmacological rescue of noise induced hearing loss using N-acetylcysteine and acetyl-L-carnitine.

Despite the use of hearing protection devices (HPDs) and engineering changes designed to improve workspaces, noise-induced hearing loss continues to be one of the most common and expensive disabilities in the US military. Many service members suffer acoustic trauma due to improper use of HPDs, sound levels exceeding the protective capacity of the HPDs, or by unexpected, injurious exposures. In these cases, there is no definitive treatment for the hearing loss. This study investigated the use of the pharmacological agents N-acetylcysteine and acetyl-L-carnitine after acoustic trauma to treat co

Operator-induced contamination in cell culture systems.

Operator-induced biological contamination in cell cultures is a multifaceted problem involving the unexpected introduction of other animal cells, microbial and viral contaminants. Detailed studies on animal cell cross contaminations have been performed and published. The frequency of detection of problem cultures has been as high as 36% for one service performed in the USA, with interspecific cross contamination accounting for 25% and human intraspecific contamination representing 11%. Awareness of the potential of this problem plus the application of several characterizations are key factors

2021 AAHA Working, Assistance, and Therapy Dog Guidelines.

The guidelines are the first comprehensive consensus report on veterinary healthcare recommendations for working, assistance, and therapy dogs. This category of canine patients includes a broad assortment of animals, some with well-defined functions and others that provide a more generalized support role. The guidelines discuss recommendations for dogs trained for protection, odor/scent detection, service functions for people with diagnosed disabilities or physical limitations, emotional support, and therapeutic intervention. Although the term is often used to describe dogs providing animal-as

Disseminated trichosporonosis in a murine model of chronic granulomatous disease.

Over a period of ten months, five mice submitted to our service (the Pathology Section of the Veterinary Resources Program, Office of Research Services at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md.) were diagnosed with disseminated trichosporonosis. These mice had pyogranulomatous inflammation in multiple organs, including lung, liver, lymph nodes, salivary gland, and skin. Fungal elements in many of the lesions were identified, using special histochemical stains, and Trichosporon beigelii was obtained by use of culture of specimens at affected sites. This saprophytic fungus has caused d

[Current trends of the epidemiology of human trichinosis in Chile].

Surveillance of the epidemiology of human trichinosis in Chile has been maintained during the last 30 years by the Department of Parasitology. Incidence and prevalence have been followed-up by analysing Ministry of Health annual reports and periodical phototrichinoscopic examination of diaphragm samples from individuals autopsied at the Santiago Medico Legal Service. A decrease has been observed on: incidence from 1.4 per 100,000 in the 1960s to 0.7 in the 1980s down to 0.3 in 1993 and 1994 and to 0.5 in 1995, and prevalence from 3.4% to 2.8%, 2.0% and 0.8% in 1972, 1982, 1992 and 1997 respect

An outbreak of blue-eared pig disease (porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome) in four pig herds in Great Britain.

The clinical syndrome of a new disease of pigs in four herds in the Humberside area is described. The first signs of the disease were anorexia, lethargy and pyrexia with up to 60 per cent of the dry sows affected. These signs were followed by an increased incidence of abortions which occurred in up to 3.3 per cent of sows, premature farrowings in up to 20.6 per cent of sows and stillbirths and late mummification which affected up to 26.0 and 18.8 per cent of fetuses, respectively. Mortality in neonatal and pre-weaning pigs reached up to 88 per cent and respiratory disease of high morbidity and

Vector-borne diseases of small companion animals in Namibia: Literature review, knowledge gaps and opportunity for a One Health approach.

Namibia has a rich history in veterinary health but little is known about the vector-borne diseases that affect companion dogs and cats. The aim of this review is to summarise the existing published and available unpublished literature, put it into a wider geographical context, and explore some significant knowledge gaps. To date, only two filarial pathogens (Dirofilaria repens and Acanthocheilonema dracunculoides) and three tick-borne pathogens (Babesia canis vogeli, Hepatozoon canis and Ehrlichia canis) have been reported. Most studies have focused solely on dogs and cats in the urban Windho

Use of antimicrobial agents in livestock.

Antimicrobial agents, especially antibacterial agents, are used throughout the world, across a diverse array of extensive and intensive livestock production systems, to protect the health and welfare of livestock and to improve their performance. While some agents that are used in livestock belong to classes that have no counterpart in human medicine, this is not the case for the most widely used agents: the tetracyclines, penicillins, macrolides and sulphonamides. Many bacterial diseases of livestock cause devastating losses of animal life and productivity. As a result, their keepers can lose

Potential Risks to Hearing Functions of Service Members From Exposure to Jet Fuels.

Purpose Several military occupations, particularly those within the U.S. Air Force, require working with or around jet fuels. Jet fuels contain components that are known to affect central nervous function, yet effects of these fuels on auditory function, specifically auditory processing of sound, are not well understood at this time. Animal studies have demonstrated that exposure to jet fuels prior to noise exposure can exacerbate the noise exposure's effects, and service members exposed to jet fuels are at risk of noise exposure within their work environments. The purpose of this article was

Human and animal health surveys among pastoralists.

Valid human and livestock health surveys, including longitudinal follow-up, are feasible among mobile pastoralists and provide fundamental information to agencies for interventions that are responsive to realities and effective in addressing the needs of pastoralists. However, pastoralists are often excluded from studies, surveillance systems and health programmes. The occurrence of preventable and treatable diseases such as perinatal tetanus, measles and tuberculosis are indicative of limited access to health providers and information. It is difficult for health services to include effective

Identification of risk factors for rabies exposure and access to post-exposure prophylaxis in Chad.

Rabies remains a global public health problem, with Africa as one of the most affected continents. Endemic transmission in the unvaccinated domestic dog population of developing countries leads to many exposures with subsequent death in humans due to lack of access to existing effective prevention tools. The presented study identifies factors of exposure and rabies risk in Chad on the household and health facility levels and highlights the challenges of access to Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). Data on bite exposure and prevention was collected through a representative cross-sectional survey

Improved Access to Diagnostics for Rhodesian Sleeping Sickness around a Conservation Area in Malawi Results in Earlier Detection of Cases and Reduced Mortality.

Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense Human African Trypanosomiasis (rHAT) is a zoonotic disease transmitted by tsetse flies from wild and domestic animals. It presents as an acute disease and advances rapidly into a neurological form that can only be treated with melarsoprol, which is associated with a high fatality rate. Bringing diagnostic services for rHAT closer to at-risk populations would increase chances of detecting cases in early stages of disease when treatment is safer and more effective. In Malawi, most of the rHAT cases occur around Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve. Until 2013, diagnosis of

[Postoperative pain therapy in Germany. Status quo].

A great deal of progress has been made in the field of postoperative pain therapy in the last 20 years. Beginning from clinical trials on the effectiveness of individual procedures, such as epidural anesthesia and patient-controlled analgesia, a wide range of healthcare services research as well as basic research with human and animal experiments has been established. Whereas health services research in the 1980s and 1990s focused more on the implementation of acute pain services, outcome-oriented research approaches are nowadays the center of attention. Acute pain registries and pain certific

Infectious foot-and-mouth disease virus was isolated from meat product illegally brought into Japan and confiscated during quarantine inspection.

In recent years, the emergence of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) in previously unaffected regions has become a serious concern. Although the routes of incursion remain unclear, transportation of contaminated products is a major risk factor. Here, we report the first isolation of infectious FMDV from illegally brought animal product confiscated by the Animal Quarantine Service of Japan. Among the animal products prohibited from being imported into Japan, the FMDV gene was detected in two types of meat products, goat meat and sausages, which were confiscated from passenger luggage and inter

Evaluation of a noncontrolled, pre-euthanasia, intramuscular sedation drug protocol including alfaxalone 4%, medetomidine, and acepromazine for injured or ill raccoons.

BACKGROUND: As a major animal control service provider in the city of Guelph and Wellington County in Ontario, the Guelph Humane Society transports and presents injured or ill raccoons requiring humane euthanasia to the Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre (OVC-HSC). Issues around handling, transportation, and delays before euthanasia have recently raised some concerns for welfare and the need for means of improving this process. OBJECTIVE: Investigation of a noncontrolled sedation and analgesia protocol for injured or ill raccoons intended to improve animal welfare by allowing h

Does Blast Medium Affect Heterotopic Ossification in a Blast-amputation Model?

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops after nearly 2/3 of traumatic blast amputations in the contemporary battlefield. This phenomenon has potentially devastating consequences for servicemen and women and its pathophysiology warrants further investigation using a previously developed animal blast model. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked, what is the (1) severity (quantity) and (2) type (location) of HO bone formation after a hindlimb blast amputation with two distinct blast media. We hypothesized that a more "war-relevant" blast medium could be a more accurate model and potentially in
